They hoped to make money in the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships in its early years, but managed to make it because they started planting and harvesting tobacco, making it the 1st permanent English settlement. After 3 years John White returned to this North Carolina settlement. The men found no people but only the letters "CRO" carved on a tree and on another part of the island they found the word "Croatoan" carved on a wooden fence post. These carvings were the only clues they could find to where the colonists might be. There are many theories about what actually happened to these colonists. This group of colonist started this Massachusetts settlement seeking religious freedom from England. They landed on Plymouth Rock. During the first winter about half of the settlers died, but none of the survivors chose to return to England.
