-------------------------------------------------------------ATTENDENCE:
Its an online class, so on your own, several times a week, you should:
• Check your official University Email (daily)
• Check BLACKBOARD for announcements, lecture materials, quiz schedules
• Check MASTERING ASTRONOMY for announcements, homework, quizzes
Each student should have a valid Blackboard account, and check it regularly for
BLACKBOARD:
announcements, handouts, lectures, topical supplements and quizzes.
HOMEWORK: “Mastering Astronomy”:
There will be regularly assigned homework
problems, 2-3 per week. Its important for you to spend time on them, even if you don’t get it all correct.
Most of homework will use “Mastering Astronomy”, but some may be “old fashion” pencil on paper that
you will need to scan and email.
• Mastering Astronomy: login at www.masteringastronomy.com
• Course: " CSUEB 2014F Physics 1800-02 ONLINE”
• Course ID: MAPEZZAGLIA53775
• You will need an “access code” to pay for the service, either:
o Came with your textbook (if you bought from bookstore)
o Purchased separately from bookstore
o Or you can buy directly from Mastering Astronomy online
WEB: Some additional material may be posted at my website:
http://www.clifford.org/drbill/csueb/
Login needed for some parts, Login as “csueb1800”, password: “hubble9”
This site will mirror most material posted on Blackboard, and also have additional resources.
EXAMS:
Exam schedule will be announced about a week in advance with sample questions
made available. The plan is to have Quiz 1, Exam 1, Quiz 2, Exam 2, Quiz 3 (?), Final. Your lowest quiz
score will be dropped. These exams will be posted for 3 days, after which they will be taken down. If you
do not do them in this time you get a zero. Make up exams will not be given except for college accepted
reasons with documentation (e.g. death in family, documented illness). The exams will be either on
Blackboard or on Mastering Astronomy.
GRADES:
Grade Weighting is approximately: Quizzes (20%), Midterm (20%), . Comprehensive
Final (35%), Homework-Activities (25%). A "typical" grade distribution for this course would be: A (20%),
B(35%), C(30%), D/F (15%), however this varies pending class performance.
Academic Honesty: . Any cheating/plagiarism on exams (or homework) will automatically result with a
“zero” score, and a referral to the student discipline office for evaluation and censure.

Student Learning Objectives
1. Demonstrate ability to recognize and classify astronomical objects, specifically constellation
identification, nebulae, star clusters, planetary bodies and galaxies.
2. Study underlying physical laws and processes that explain the evolution of the universe and
bodies within and their behaviors.
3. Be able to summarize the methodologies that we use to remotely measure the universe and
properties of astronomical bodies for which we are too far away to have any direct contact.
4. Communicate effectively summaries of basic models and their underlying assumptions and
evidence that we have for them which explain the formation and evolution of the solar
system, stars, galaxy and universe.
