Records breaches have been increasing in recent years, propelling the need for institutions to do what they can to prevent attacks, or avoid careless exposures. Regretfully, however, best preparedness efforts might prove inadequate, or insufficient, against sophisticated hackers, and an institution may all of a sudden find itself facing the dreadful circumstance of having to deal with an information breach. This session will discuss strategies for handling a real-life data breach and will highlight preventive measures being taken by colleges and universities to secure and shield their systems against intrusions and theft. M15001 It’s About Time: Take Charge of Your Catalog & Curriculum Wes Miller, Account Executive, DIGARC Feeling the pressure of yet another catalog revision cycle? Flustered by a broken governance process? No more! In this fast-paced session, learn how nearly 400 institutions build, organize and publish interactive course information in real time, while maintaining a comprehensive audit trail of every curricular decision. Save your staff time, your institution money, and yourself aggravation — discover a better way. M15002 Extending the Credential; Empowering the Learner Chris Hyde, Regional Manager, HE Solutions, Parchment At its core, Parchment believes that credentials matter. To senders, issuing credentials is their mission and charter. To receivers, in order to evaluate and provide entry to the next opportunity. And to students, who seek to better their life and circumstance through education. Parchment’s platform empowers both administrators and learners. Come learn about the future of eTranscript and credential management including features such as mobile support, automation without IT involvement, and ordering and fulfillment for eDiplomas and other official documents. 23 SESSION DESCRIPTIONS CAPACRAO 2015 M15003 Registrar’s Office Annual Report: Presenting Your Office So Others Will Notice Meredith Braz, Registrar of the College, Dartmouth College and AACRAO VP for Leadership & Management Development, 2015-2016 You know you work hard but how do you get the work of your office recognized? Do you prepare an annual report and if so, does it just get a glance and then is filed away? Borrowing from our colleagues in Admissions/Enrollment and Development who are pros at presenting metrics and yearly achievements, we will look at ways to present an annual report that is readable, reaches broad audiences, and promotes our goals. We will discuss what data to collect, how to gather it, and how to present various accomplishments in a format that will be read, as well as share ideas on where to make the report available to reach various constituents. M15004 I Will Survive! (Panel) Carol Harrison, Registrar, CSMD Catherine Mund, Registrar, HCC “At first I was afraid I was petrified Thinking I couldn't live without you by my side And I've been spending nights Thinking how you did me wrong And I grew strong And I learned how to get along Spent so many days how you did me wrong... In this session, the presenters will share their year long process, what they learned, how residency is now classified, and will provide recommendations for best practices. Attend this session to learn some simple do's and don'ts on the collection, interpretation, documentation, and communication of residency status. M16303 What Do We Need? Grades! When Do We Need Them? Now! Josephine Albert, Associate Registrar, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Are you frustrated because you can't get faculty to submit their grades on time? Do you have a backlog of missing grades that is larger than you care to admit? Grades play a important role in higher education. Not only do they serve as indicators of academic progress towards a degree or certificate, but they are increasingly used to determine whether students can continue to receive federal financial aid. Yet in spite of the weight given to grades, it is an ongoing challenge to ensure the timely reporting of grades to the Registrar's Office at the end of each academic term. Failure to obtain grades during the prescribed grading period often results in a pileup of missing grades which can become difficult to manage over time if left unchecked. This session examines the various aspects of these two intertwined issues. It will explore strategies to make the grade collection process more efficient and leverage the associated metrics to advantage. M16304 Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) Joellen Shendy, Associate Vice Provost & Registrar, UMUC Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a hot topic right now! What is CPL, how does it fit within credential programs, how do you articulate it and how do you transcript it? Increased emphasis on access, affordability, and relevance of higher education continue to dominate the landscape - how can you work on finding ways to incorporate CPL in your programs? 26 SESSION DESCRIPTIONS CAPACRAO 2015 Tuesday T09001 Keynote #2 - The Inconspicuous Leader: Leading Academic and Enrollment Services Offices in the Twenty-First Century Meredith Braz, Registrar of the College, Dartmouth College and AACRAO, VP for Leadership & Management Development, 2015-2016 Drawing from the chapter in the Leadership Lessons AACRAO publication with the same title, AACRAO author and experienced registrar, Meredith Braz, will share skills, thoughts and ideas on higher education leadership in today’s environment . New and re-imagined models of educating students are emerging - among which Competency Based Education (CBE) holds great promise. While CBE is not new, it is surging in popularity. How does the paradigm shift which CBE brings affect how we provide evidence to the student of their learning journey? What conversations are occurring at your institution regarding competency based education? This session focuses on the challenges in developing a new extended transcript for CBE. System challenges with interoperability, potential for electronic delivery that is interactive, and depth of granularity of the data on the document are just some of the questions that must be answered. Traditional boundaries will disappear when it is the demonstration of learning that counts. How do we develop a new way to showcase learning while assuring our current consumers of transcripts feel at home with the new reality? T11003 Online Orientation Travis Loveday, Student Affairs Coordinator, CSMD Online orientation can provide an opportunity for your institution to redesign or compliment your current orientation program. Over the past year the College of Southern Maryland has been developing an online orientation to meet the needs of our incoming students. T13454 Technologies Transformative Role in Higher Education Dr. MJ Bishop, Director William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation University System of Maryland (USM) To date, the 100-year history of technology use in education paints a rather bleak picture of the extent to which technology, in-and-of-itself, can lead to sustainable academic transformation. This presentation traces the many lessons learned from that history and revisits the definition of the word technology itself toward exploring how we can begin thinking differently about technology’s role in transforming higher education and create meaningful, sustainable change.
