Aloha!

This summer I joined the presidents of Hawaii Pacific University and the University of Hawaii in a panel discussion on higher education sponsored by the Hawaii Society of Business Professionals. The discussion ranged from how to keep a college education affordable and ensure access for all to the value of collegiate athletics.

Each president shared thoughts about the larger issues as well as the specific challenges and approaches that we face in our respective institutions. Some of our mutual conclusions focused on the growing need for new resources given national demographic trends (fewer graduating seniors) and increased competition for existing resources. The artificially low tuition at our public university system creates a challenging price-sensitive environment for Hawaii’s private colleges.

Chaminade has been blessed over the last decade to have been successful in attracting substantial external support: a total of $133 million since 2000. As this issue goes to print, we have just received word of our single largest grant to date: an award of $10 million from the US Department of Education under the Title III program for Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions.

Overall external funding, celebrated in our annual Honor Roll of Donors, enables us to keep our tuition affordable, develop innovative programs and offer attractive scholarships to our students. Chaminade is committed to providing broad access to higher education – half of our students are the first in their families to attend college.

My role as the new chair of the presidents of our NCAA Division II PacWest Conference has brought into sharp focus the distinct challenges our island state faces in participating in intercollegiate athletics due to the high cost of air travel and time away from campus and classes. Hawaii colleges need to continue to find innovative ways to address this, and, particularly for our Division II members, we will work closely to do just that.

W lava rocks. Tuffs of pili grass received little relief to a growing thirst.

Keawe trees periodically offered some shade from the heat but preferred to grow closer to the water’s edge. The small bay, caught between Kawaihae Harbor and Spencer Beach Park, was muddy where brackish streams, gray silt and ocean water met. Further out was a pelagic blue ocean that in a different season harbored kohola¯ (whales) frolicking in migration along the Kona Coast.

From the ocean water to the barren grasslands, up the hill towards the eastern sky, the heiau stood more than three stories high on the Kona

Coast on the island of Hawaii. It is a massive monument to the historic uniting of the Hawaiian Islands, marking a moment birthed in blood and despair, the culmination of wars throughout the multi island chain.

It was here in 1791 that Kamehameha strategized his new order in the wake of the chaos of warring islands and would begin to settle the power struggles of his time giving rise to the Kingdom of Hawaii.

It is here that Native Hawaiian men -- ka¯naka maoli-- now come yearly to reenact battles of the islands, reaffirm their allegiances to the

Hawaiian Kingdom and recommit themselves to cultural values and traditions.

At this summer’s annual Ho‘oku‘ikahi I Pu‘ukohola¯ Establishment Day

Hawaiian Cultural Festival, hundreds of ka¯naka maoli representing various organizations and agencies gathered to pay homage to their ancestors. Many were there to reenact a mock battle between chiefs.

Fifteen student nurses from Chaminade, including two returning seniors and three faculty, set up a first-aid tent adjacent to the mock battlefield to render aid. The warriors prepared for the sacred ceremonies with fasting and martial arts disciplines. The Chaminade team had also prepared. In July, the students had immersed themselves in studies, training in health screening practices, as well as went over what to pack.

They had acquainted themselves on possible injuries that might occur, the challenges of heat and fasting on the warriors and kupuna (elders), and how to approach and ask permission in serving participants and members of the public. The students also immersed themselves in cultural traditions, learned what was expected in terms of protocols, appropriate behaviors including what was and was not kapu (forbidden).

Mei Ling Isaacs, their kumu, helped them prepare their own k l

¯ hei (type of cloth cloak tied across one shoulder) with a unique kapala (wood stamp) design and an oli created especially for them.

The day before the mock battle, the Chaminade team was recognized by the ali‘i nui (high chief). “We were invited to a sacred ceremony as the only ‘outsiders’,” said Chaminade School of Nursing professor, Tiffanie

Kanayama . On Friday, August 15, at 2 a.m., the students and faculty prepared for a spiritual encounter of tradition and culture. Under a galaxy of stars in a black obsidian night, the team approached

Pu‘ukohola Heiau. “We walked in silence dressed in k l

¯ hei and rope sandals or barefooted to the entrance of the heiau and chanted our oli to ask permission to enter the sacred space and to honor the ancestors,” said Kanayama.

Chaminade’s three male students were accompanied by a male Native

Hawaiian physician to the inner domain of Pu‘ukohola¯ Heiau while the female students and faculty members ventured to the Mailekini Heiau close by. Awe, wonder and humility pervaded their thoughts.

Kaipo Gilman , one of the male student nurses participating, later reflected that he had been involved with cultural traditions in high school. “But there was a depth here that I hadn’t experienced before. It was moving to be at the men’s ceremony,” he said.

On the day of the mock battle, ka¯naka maoli presented gifts to the

ali‘i nui, a descendant of King Kamehameha, and offered oli. The

ali‘i nui granted permission to do battle. The ka¯ne (men) were ready.

So were the students and their faculty. The students had water available and had packed bundles of sweet potato and pineapple to help with both hydration and hyperthermia. They worked with others from John A.

Burns School of Medicine and started to conduct keen crowd observation. If distress was evident, students called for assistance and brought the person to the first aid tent. During the morning battle,

water and care were provided for 700 observers and participants.

The warriors positioned themselves for battle. Wearing only malo

(loincloths), the warriors used hardwood spears with blunted ends in their sham battle. Wood cracked hard against wood. Underneath the barren grasslands, basaltic lava rock hid, offering yet another surface of pain. Grass crunched under foot as words were exchanged, as hot as the continued on page 6

continued from page 5 heat of the day. The mock battle ensued until their energy was expended and peace followed.

As the ka¯ne broke away from each other, it was time for the Chaminade team to get down to business. Collaborating with Ka Meheu Ohu O Ka

Hono, a non-profit organization whose mission is the preservation of

Hawaiian material, culture and practices, the students and their faculty worked with other volunteers to provide health screenings, health promotional and educational offerings to ka¯naka maoli, their families and to the general public. Thanks to a generous grant from Hawaii

Medical Service Association (HMSA), Chaminade was able to join a consortium of health providers for the fourth year, increasing the event’s capacity for health screening and health education.

The student nurses worked quickly and efficiently serving each person that came to the tent. They competently processed nearly 200 people, helping with blood glucose, cholesterol, BMI and blood pressure screenings at the event’s make-shift health clinic.

Kanayama, who has spearheaded Chaminade’s involvement since its inception, explained the special relationship that has developed over the years. “The first year we were new and beginners in all of this, and there was some distrust. But now because we have been here year after year, we have been accepted. In fact, this year they relied heavily on us to take the lead in screenings.”

Kanayama pointed to Kumu John

Keolamaka‘ainananakalahuiokalanikamehameha‘ekolu Lake, one of the primary founders of Ho‘oku‘ikahi, as being instrumental in this connection with the Hawaiian community. In the 1990s Kumu Lake had been appointed as kahuna nui (chief priest) for Pu’ukohola¯ Heiau.

Kumu Lake, who had graduated from Saint Anthony High School

(a Marianist school on Maui) and had taught at Saint Louis School and Chaminade, had also served at Chaminade as its “Kumu-in-

Residence” before his passing in 2008. The Hawaiian community continues to honor him as one who lived and practiced Hawaiian cultural values integrated with his deep Catholic beliefs and practices.

The invitation -- the privilege -- to serve in the cultural festival came in recognition of Kumu Lake’s legacy at Chaminade and the university’s identity as a Native-Hawaiian serving institution.

For the next two days, Chaminade students set up booths near the bay.

They shared health education tailored to Native Hawaiian diet and lifestyles as well as information on heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. Especially popular were breast cancer beads in small lauhala gift boxes that women took for themselves and men took for the women they loved.

According to Kanayama, the experience has had a significant impact on the Native Hawaiian community and on Chaminade students. The

Halau Mele o Moku o Keawe directed by Kumu John Ku‘uhoamele Cuban carry on the legacy of Kumu Lake at Pu‘ukohola¯.

Native Hawaiian students experience a powerful connection to the plight of their community, and all her students grow in their understanding in how to connect and care for diverse populations and to build cultural competence. “The experience teaches students to care for their community. Our students learn more about the vulnerabilities of the population and how we must alter our approach to build trust so we are allowed to effectively care for patients,” she said.

Each night, the students would debrief with their faculty about the day.

Gilman, a Native Hawaiian himself reflected, “Native Hawaiians mistrust

Western doctors. We can advocate for Western medicine with them because we understand the culture.”

Another Native Hawaiian student pondered on a patient’s trust as being a sacred privilege and on the nurse’s role as the patient’s advocate. “We have this knowledge and can help, but many in the community distrust Western medicine. We listen and understand and respect the culture. We are like bridges,” said student-nurse, Sharmayne Kamaka. “They trust us because we can be nurses who respect their culture, their values and who they are and yet are there to make sure that they get the health care that they need.”

Student coordinator, Joelle Devera, noted, “ This experience really enhances the students’ educational experience because it continues to teach

Chaminade nursing students what we have been learning since freshman year which is, to be culturally sensitive.”

On the last day, the students packed up their poster boards, tables, tents and blood pressure reading equipment. Like pods of kohola¯

(whales) moving through the mysterious blue Pacific, most of the cultural practitioners as well as the Chaminade team would leave West

Hawaii and return to everyday life. However, like whales navigating great distances through their song, the Chaminade students remembered their oli: “…Firm in the living knowledge of Kalaepohaku…Pouring forth is the wisdom of the elders of the peoples’ well-being...We stand humbly on the sacred path…”

Student nurses Brittany Yim, Shanlee Nihoa, and

Lana Gilman pause to braid their hair.

Big Island resident, Uncle Roy Wilson, who is in his nineties, shared his mana’o (wisdom) on everything from taro to music with the Chaminade team.

Student nurse Lana Gilman tends to event volunteer, Mel Yanos.

IMUA E NĀ POKI‘I:

Kamehameha Scholars

By Diane Peters-Nguyen

“It’s okay to seek excellence; be the best at whatever you do,”

Kamehameha Schools Trustee Janeen Olds advised the group of

92 soon to be graduating Kamehameha Scholars. These students, who attend public and private schools throughout the state, are on track to complete a four year educational enrichment program aimed at ensuring that they successfully enter college and achieve a higher education degree – and win a scholarship for college from

Kamehameha in the process.

Earlier that day, the group assembled on the lawn outside of

Ka‘iwak

1 campus and chanted in unison words that have fueled their spirit over the four years: “Imua e na¯ poki‘i/E inu I ka wai awa awa…”

As the warriors urged forward into battle by Kamehameha the

Great in this chant, these young men and women are preparing to take on the challenges of life beyond high school as they prepare to secure a higher education degree.

That seven of the Oahu graduating group this past spring matriculated to Chaminade for the current academic year may not come entirely as a surprise given the educational background of the dedicated counselors who work at the Kamehameha Scholars program – the vast majority of the counselors in the program have a degree from Chaminade.

The university’s strong counseling psychology master’s degree program, currently the only one offered in Hawai‘i, provides a robust platform for these alumni to serve the Native Hawaiian community by equipping high school students to enter and complete college.

For Marques Kaonohi , ’12, this graduating class was his first – a rewarding and emotional experience. “The scholar graduation was very special since it was when the students could see all the results of their hard work toward their educational goals. Everyone in the program was accepted at least to a safety school and we have students going to top colleges in the mainland and here in

Hawaii. I am so proud of all of the students,” he said.

For Kaonohi, who is a role model to the students he advises, his ending up on this pathway was not evident. He faced challenges as a high school student hailing from Waimanalo and says he lost more than a dozen friends along the way to accidents and other tragedies that claimed their lives. A strapping, fit young man, he played football at the University of Hawaii with Colt Brennan.

Kaonohi believed in the power of education and drove himself to get his Masters of Counseling Psychology at Chaminade. Just a few months after graduating, he was hired for the Kamehameha

Scholars position. “I want this program to help the parents and students because attending college will change their lives – it is so important to their future.

Chaminade extends its gratitude to Heritage Society members, like alumna and donor, Jan A. Seymour, ’76, who graciously designated Chaminade as a beneficiary in their estate plans.

“Establishing the Fumiko Kanazawa Scholarship was my family’s way to honor my aunt and her love as an educator while offering help to those who are joining our Chaminade

‘ohana,” said Seymour. “By also leaving Chaminade in my estate plans, I feel assured that future generations of students will benefit from a Chaminade education just as I did.”

Kick-off and Be-Jay Kodama, BA ’86 rallying alumni!

Aloha alumni,

By the time you receive this magazine, it will be Thanksgiving season, a time of year we traditionally reflect on how grateful we are for the many blessings we have received. I’d like to thank the alumni who support our alumni program and university efforts and the many students, faculty and staff who continue to make Chaminade a special place.

I’m so grateful to the dozen or so loyal

Alumni Reunion Committee volunteers who dedicate their time and service. Many of them have been a part of the great momentum moving Chaminade forward.

One of their biggest outreach comes during the annual Alumni Reunion Weekend, when they help me to welcome you all back to campus with warm hospitality and aloha.

Thank you to all the alumni volunteers who serve on reunion committees and on

Chaminade boards as regents and governors, as well as on various committees, for your time, leadership and service.

I’d also like to thank the many alumni who support the University efforts with your generosity and participation. (See photos in the Alumni Spotter.) During a recent Hui ‘A¯hinahina Booster kick-off, many of our alumni from coaches to attendees “shouted out” that they were alumni. It is this kind of pride, spirit and support that will take Chaminade to new heights of success. Finally mahalo to all the students, faculty and staff for preserving the Marianist culture and Chaminade community. Our community, our ‘ohana is what makes the Chaminade experience so special.

Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Chaminade University of Honolulu allowed me to gain a better understanding of how businesses, nonprofits, labor unions, and other key stakeholders partner with government. The principles I have learned continue to serve as my guide for making decisions that are important to our community” said Brandon.

Peter Heimerdinger, MBA ’12

Peter Heimerdinger sent in this update.

“Currently, I am working at Pacific Beach

Hotel as the Guest Service Manager. I have been in the hospitality industry for the past ten years. Before working at Pacific Beach

Hotel, I worked at The Kahala Hotel and

Resort where I gained a lot of experience working in the different departments of the hotel such as F&B, Banquets, Bell, and Valet. I chose the hospitality industry because I have the opportunity to make a lasting impression with each guest and be an ambassador of aloha. I am also working on a startup business that I hope will help volunteers and nonprofits network.

One of my most memorable volunteer experiences was helping muck houses in

Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. This experience changed my life, and has sparked a passion that I hope will help all those who volunteer or need volunteers. I started developing the concept of my business in

Sally Little’s class while I was working on my MBA. Chaminade University has given me a great foundation and I am very proud to be an alumnus.”

Catelin Aiwohi, BS Elementary Education ’13

Catelin Aiwohi is now the Executive

Assistant at Office of Hawaiian Affairs

Washington DC Bureau. She writes, “I owe much of this achievement to former staff and Associate Provost at Chaminade, Mr.

Henry Halenani Gomes. I would not be where I am today without his guidance.

She received a certificate of completion from the

Native American

Political Leadership

Program at George

Washington University in July of 2013 where she took courses in

Electoral/Legislative

Processes and

Practicum in Political

Management. She also completed the Washington Internships for Native Students Program at American

University in the Spring of 2014 where she took courses in Policy Process, Government

Regulation and the Deregulation,

Presidency and the Executive Branch.

Nathan M. Toothman, MBA ’13

Nathan Toothman is the founder, owner and principal engineer of BEAR

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW UPDATE

FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2014 (unaudited FYE 2014 financial data*)

Aulani Ka‘ano‘i, Vice President of Finance and Facilities

The University had a positive change in net assets for the year ending

June 30, 2014, of over $2.75 million. These results were driven by strong market performance in our endowment portfolio, consistent success in receiving private gifts and federal grants, and operating at a modest surplus. The endowment portfolio recorded total realized and unrealized gains for the year of over $1.36 million, and the University had a net operating income (cash basis) of approximately $400,000.

Construction and renovation has continued on campus. Phase IV of the

Clarence T.C. Ching Hall renovation was completed, which provides newly renovated office space for the Business and Finance offices. In addition, space above the Carlson Fitness Center was renovated to provide for the first time, men’s and women’s lockers and showers for student, faculty and staff users.

Department of Education Title III funding allowed us to renovate three buildings this summer. In Hale Lokelani, one of three on

17%

Facilities office. In Hale Pohaku, another of our on campus residence halls, we installed fire sprinklers in each room and on all exit pathways, creating a safer environment for our residents. Finally, in Tredtin Hall, we completed improvements to the dining room and server, which began last summer. New flooring, countertops, and dining room furniture; were installed and all areas finally painted. Our students have enjoyed the “fresh look” of the new dining room.

The major concern of this past year was lower enrollments, especially in our part-time programs. Due to this, revenue was approximately

$2 million below budget for the year. Recognizing the revenue shortfall, a careful eye was placed on spending. Due to strict expenditure control, the University was able to achieve a surplus. Although a difficult year, the University continued to rebuild its working capital and cash position.

During the year, $100,000 of capital was reserved, amounting to a total of $2.4 million over the last 4 years.
