Study Sheet for Quiz: Poetry Terms
Directions: Review the following definitions for a short test on poetry terms. Use the poetry worksheets and
classnotes in your writer's workshop notebook to find the answers.
Know the definitions for onomatopoeia, alliteration (including consonance and assonance), metaphors and
similes, rhyme and rhythm. Be able to recognize and explain examples of each.
For rhythm, know the four rhythms: iambic, trochaic, anapestic, dactylic. Know the accent/unaccented
pattern for each of the four rhythms.
Know the meter for one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
You can find the answers for rhythm in your notebook, where we took extensive notes on rhythm and meter.
Be able to scan a line of poetry, determining the rhythm and meter.
