Biographical Sketch
Truman Hamilton Stacey, 91, died on Sunday, May 11, 2008. He was born on December 8, 1916
in Port Arthur, Texas, to James Harrison and Billie (Davis) Stacey. He was raised in Rising Star,
Texas which aptly describes the life that he led. He converted to Catholicism in 1958 and was a
member of the Cathedral Parish.
In 1933, he began his writing career as a sophomore at Navasota (Texas) High School, writing
about the football games for the school paper. The following year he was made sports editor for
the Navasota Daily Examiner while still in school. Except for Army Sgt. Stacey’s short military
stint during World War II (1942-43) and University of Detroit Director of Public Relations
(1945-49), he spent 21 more years as sports editor/writer for papers such as Beaumont (Texas)
Enterprise, Daily Oklahoman (Okla.), Detroit Free Press (Mich.), Washington Times Herald
(D.C.) and the Lake Charles American Press. In 1961, Truman became editor-in-chief of the
American Press, a position he held until retirement in 1982. He was also the founding editor of
the Diocese of Lake Charles Southwest Catholic Newspaper in 1985.
After five years as editor he stepped down so that he could concentrate on being the newsletter
editor for the majority of organizations he belonged to. Truman received numerous awards for
his writings. He also wrote two books - ―Louisiana French Heritage‖ and ―The Visible Church‖ as well as a number of historical articles for newspapers and other periodicals.
Truman received a B.A. in Philosophy (1946) and M.A. in History (1951) from the University of
Detroit. He moved to Lake Charles in 1949, returned to Detroit to finish his degree and then
moved back in 1951. His first marriage was to Dorothy Mary Pibion (Lake Charles) on May 25,
1958 until her passing on January 9, 1979. His second marriage was to Norma Elaine Trahan
(Welch) on February 2, 1980 until her passing on May 6, 1999. He had no children in either
marriage.
His volunteerism spanned 40 years. He was a Knight of Magistral Grace in the Sovereign
Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, a Knight Grand
Cross in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a Knight Commander w/Star
in the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St. George, a Knight Grand Cross in the Military
and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, a Knight Commander w/Star in the Pontifical
Order of St. Gregory the Great, and a Knight Commander in the Order of the Fleur de Lis.
Truman was a past president of the Calcasieu Area Council Boy Scouts of America and was
currently serving on the Council Executive Board and the Southern Region Advisory Board. His
major scouting honors include the Silver Antelope, Silver Beaver, Whitney M. Young Jr. Award
and James E. West Fellow. He was a past region president for the National Catholic Committee
on Scouting and was currently serving on the Advisory Board. He received the Silver St. George
and the St. George Medals for his efforts.
He was a past president for the local Serra Club, Past District Governor and past Serra
International trustee. His top honors include the Harry J. O’Haire Memorial Award given to an
outstanding world Serran. Truman was a past national historian for the Knights of Peter Claver.

He received their two top national honors — The Gold and Silver Medals of Merit. As a Knight
of Columbus, he was a past master of the LA Fourth Degree District, past faithful navigator of
Msgr. Cramers Assembly, former district deputy and past Grand Knight of Council 1207. He
was inducted into the Columbian Hall of Fame and has received the Past State Deputy’s Award.
He was active in American Legion Post 1 and recently served as its commander. He was also
active in the LA Historical Association, Bishop Jude Spyrer’s Chapter of Pontifical Knights,
Diocese of Lake Charles Companions of Honor, and was invested as a chevalier in the Ordre
National du Merite. He is also a former member of the American Red Cross Board of Directors,
Calcasieu Citizens for Decency, Calcasieu Parish Family Service Agency, Citizens Conference
for the Courts of Judicial Reform, Citizens for Educational Reform, Council for the
Development of French in Louisiana, Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors,
Louisiana Council for Music and Performing Arts Board of Directors, and the National
Conference of Christians and Jews.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains materials relating to the Knights of Columbus, the Knights of Peter
Claver, and the Pontifical Orders of Knights, as well as other organizations including the Serra
Club, the Boy Scouts of America, and the American Legion. Materials include scrapbooks,
photographs, correspondence, personal writings, and much more. The materials in this collection
relate to the life, work, and interests of Truman Stacey.
