Executive MBA (EMBA)
Course Descriptions
A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is the gold standard for respect and success in today’s complex and
global business environment. The UNM – Anderson Executive MBA is an elite program designed to provide highquality, internationally competitive business education to New Mexico’s experienced, working professionals. This
accelerated, two-year program meets every other week on Friday afternoons from 1:00-6:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings
from 8:00-1:00 p.m. (Some exceptions apply.) Courses in the program are taken in the order listed below. All EMBA
students take each course together as a single cohort.
MGT 700 – Management Perspectives/Orientation
Establishes the conceptual foundation of the Executive MBA program. Prepares students to function effectively in a collaborative
learning environment and as members of productive work teams. Includes individual assessment of management/personality profile
to gain insights into leadership and communication styles. Offered on a Credit/No Credit basis only. (1 credit hour)
MGT 706 – Organizational Behavior and Diversity
Draws on behavioral science research and theory as a basis for understanding, managing, and changing organizations. Through
experiential learning, examines individual and group behavior; communication; power and politics; conflict resolution and negotiation;
and motivating and managing a diverse workforce. (3 credit hours)
MGT 712 – Business Communications
The elements of written and oral business communication. Addresses grammar, rhetoric, style, audience analysis, format, presentation,
and delivery. Effective communication strategies for professional settings are defined through various assignments including memos,
proposals, websites, and individual/group presentations. (3 credit hours)
MGT 702 – Financial Accounting
Accounting concepts and procedures used to prepare corporate financial statements: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Statement
of Cash Flows. Reporting choices within Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in deriving performance measures, and the
analysis and interpretation of financial data. (3 credit hours)
MGT 704 – Economics for Managers
A survey of both microeconomics – the study of individual and organizational decision-making – and macroeconomics, which
investigates national and international concerns. Economic theory will be complemented by practical applications and discussions of
current policy issues affecting business. (3 credit hours)
MGT 703 – Managerial Accounting
The derivation and use of accounting information to manage strategic and operational choices, determine pricing and profitability,
control costs, and evaluate performance. Spreadsheets are used to solve managerial accounting problems and to make sound business
decisions. (3 credit hours)
MGT 722 – Marketing Management
Overview of concepts and theories related to consumer behavior/segmentation, marketing research, competitive positioning, marketing
information systems, distribution, pricing, promotional considerations, and relationship marketing. Focuses on products and services
and the creation of an actual marketing plan. (3 credit hours)

MGT 701 – Statistical Analysis for Management Decisions
The practical applications of statistics and the analysis of data to make meaningful organizational decisions. Topics include:
probability, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis. Special emphasis on quality, time and cost
improvements, and effective decision-making. (3 credit hours)
MGT 711—Management of Technology and Innovation
Examines how organizations must utilize a multi-disciplinary approach to maximize competitive advantage provided by technological
innovation. Students develop a mindset and a tool set to manage effectively in a technological environment and to cope with constant
change. (3 credit hours)
MGT 728 – Global Business Environment
An overview of issues and challenges confronting managers in the global marketplace, including regional economic integration.
Theories of international trade, exchange rates, and investment policies. Understanding cultural differences and the practical aspects of
doing business across borders. (2 credit hours)
MGT 708 – Ethical, Social, Political and Legal Environment
Examines the roles and responsibilities of business, relationships with stakeholders, key legal concepts, and ethical decision-making
processes by individual managers. Blends theory and application for more effective responses to the external environment, including
political and social interests. (3 credit hours)
MGT 726 – Financial Management
Role of the finance function within the firm. Topics include: ratio analysis of financial statements, forecasting and budgeting, cash and
credit management, short- and long-term financing alternatives, capital structure, market risk and return. The underlying theme is
creation of value in business transactions. (3 credit hours)
MGT 794 – Special Topics
Includes two (2) two-credit hour electives based on current business issues and student interest. Topics might include: e-commerce,
management information systems, employment law, negotiation skills, investments, project management or starting new ventures.
(Two 2-credit hour courses)
MGT 751 – Practicum
Students choose one of the following options: (1) enrollment in an approved MBA elective, (2) attendance at the "Washington Campus"
program and a follow-on research paper, or (3) participation in a seminar and ten-day international residency. (3 credit hours)
MGT 720 – Operations Management
How to continuously improve quality and productivity of products, services, and work-performing processes to create value for
customers. Utilizes readings, case analyses, and student projects to understand and apply: theory of constraints, total quality concepts
and tools, and just-in-time management philosophy/practices. (3 credit hours)
MGT 798 – Strategic Management
Develops the application of strategic management concepts, principles, and techniques through case analyses. Draws upon
professional experience and concepts learned in other functional areas to develop a general management perspective and the ability to
impact organizational direction and performance. (3 credit hours)
MGT 707 – Executive Leadership
Further grounding in organizational behavior issues, with a special emphasis on assessing leadership competencies and changing
corporate cultures. Includes analyses of leading companies, skill building strategies, and direct application of material to individual
work settings. (2 credit hours)

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Three letters of recommendation are required, including one from your immediate supervisor. Each letter should have the EMBA
Letter of Recommendation form attached. The most meaningful evaluations come from people who have been responsible for
evaluating your academic or managerial performance. Form letters and return envelopes are provided for this purpose.

TRANSCRIPTS
Please send one official transcript from each college, university and graduate school you attended as a registered student. Each
transcript must be enclosed in the Registrar’s sealed envelope and included in your application package or sent directly to the
Executive MBA program office. If you earned a degree from the University of New Mexico, we will request your transcript. The
Admission Committee looks to see that you have at least a 3.0 GPA on your last 60 credit hours of college coursework.*

GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION TEST (GMAT) OR GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION (GRE)
The GMAT and GRE are administered computer-adaptive tests which you can take year-round at a date and time that are
convenient for you. The Admission Committee looks to see that you have a score of 500+ on the GMAT or an equivalent score

A waiver of the Anderson School’s entrance exam requirement may be granted for one of the following conditions:
- A Ph.D. in any field or an M.D.
