That workshop brought together industrial researchers, clinicians, and research scientists to discuss the current state-of-the-art technology in ophthalmic drug delivery (at both the front and the back of the eye) and the opportunities and challenges for future developments. The event was attended by over 30 conference participants. o Sharing Success: The Canadian CRS chapter continues to increase its involvement with our CRS parent body. o o o o Event name (3): CC-CRS/CSPS Montreal Fall Networking Event Event date: Tuesday October 30, 2012; Montreal, Quebec Canada Attendee total: 60 Event Highlights: The Canadian CRS held a joint Networking Event with the Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences in Montreal on October 30. Attendees were privileged to hear talks given by Prof. Dusica Maysinger (McGill University; Experimental Medicine) on the topic of “Microglia; The Unsung Heroes”, and Dr. Stephen J. Klein (IRICoR) on the subject of “IRICoR; A New Model of Partnership with The Biopharmaceutical Sector”. This event was well attended by CC-CRS members and further provided a social forum for interacting with local industrial representatives after the talks. o Sharing Success: Linking academia with local industry! The meeting event gave us the opportunity to invite and interact with several local industrial speakers. It also served as a forum to welcome many new members to the Canadian CRS Chapter, who joined that evening and in the days that followed. o Event name (4): Chapter Presentation at the University of Calgary, Alberta Canada o Event date: Wed May 1, 2013 o Event Highlights: The first Canadian CRS chapter event took place at the University of Calgary. Report submitted by Michael Doschak (Canada Chapter President, 2011-13). 4 B ruker and SOQUELEC representatives, as well as researchers from across Canada, gathered at the University of Alberta to attend the first Canadian Skyscan Users’ Meeting (CA-SUM). The meeting, hosted by the laboratory of Honorary CA-SUM President Dr. Michael Doschak, lasted for two days, from June 12th to June 14th. O ver the course of three days, the CASUM users meeting showcased the cutting-edge research of several laboratories at universities all over Canada, as well as the implementation of SkyScan Micro-CT technology. The first day of the conference consisted of presentations by Skyscan users sharing their successes in applying Skyscan technology. Presentations selected were invited for a free three night stay at the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe, overlooking the River Valley. P articipants were served a delicious catered lunch and then shown the four Skyscan Micro-CT scanners on campus. They were guided to Biological Sciences and the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences (CCIS) to see the ex-vivo scanners: the Skyscan 1174 in Dr. Alison Murray’s laboratory, the Skyscan 1176, owned by Dr. Murray Gingras. Lionel Wolniewicz from Soquelec and Dr. Phil Salmon from Bruker-Skyscan presented both ex-vivo scanners. 1) 2) and 7) Lionel Wolniewicz and Phil Salmon present the 1174 and 1172 in-vivo scanners, owned by Dr. Allison Murray and Dr. Murray Gingras respectively. In 3), 4), 5) and 6) Dr. Michael Doschak, Dr. Andre Rochon, Marinne Cotineau, and Dr. David Cooper present their research, specifically pertaining to their usage of Skyscan Micro-CT technology. 3 5 4 6 1 2 7 Interactive Scanner sessions 1172 @ CCIS Building + 1176 @ KATZ Building 1172/1174 Session 1176 Session @ CCIS Building, Meet in south lobby, upon Quad @ Katz Building East, Meet in room 2‐003 1:15 PM Part A Break (time for rotation) 3.00‐3.15 pm Part B 5:00 PM Groups will be announced during the meeting. Participants were guided through the inner workings of the DataViewer, CT-Analyzer and CT-Vox programs, used for image analysis and 3D rendering, respectively. The workshop lasted all morning, and gave participants a chance to try out data processing and analysis. 1 3 2 4 1) and 2) Phil Salmon explains the functions of DataViewer and CTAn respectively. 3) Participants follow along with Jereon and Phil’s presentations. 4) Michael Sullivan, from McGill University, explains his poster to Jereon Hostens. A fter having lunch, the winner of the poster presentation competition, Dominique Behrends from McGill University, was awarded an IPad. Dr. Doschak and Lionel Wolniewicz of from Soquelec gave closing speeches and ended the meeting. At 7:00 AM the next morning the tour of the beautiful Jasper National Park began! We departed by Greyhound from Edmonton and drove about four hours westward. At noon the busses arrived in the town of Jasper for a brief stop before departing once more. After an hours drive, we arrived at the scenic Maligne Lake, and some participants took a boat tour of the lake as well as Liberty Island. 1) Maligne Lake, still a very scenic view despite the overcast weather. 2) Jasper National Park, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, includes the Miette Hot Springs, and Columbia Icefields, as well as a lot of Wildlife. 3) The town of Jasper is a specialized municipality and the commercial centre of the park. 4) A mule deer. Deer, Elk and Bears are very common throughout Jasper. A fterwards, we were bussed off to the Miette hot springs, the final stop on our journey before boarding the bus and heading home, and the first annual CA-SUM meeting was over! Thank you to all who attended and participated!
