Yet I recently came across an article (thanks to Jen Wasson, our new Athletic Director!) that refutes this false notion. It states women are more “innately inclined to be generous” with time, talent and treasure; yet, “they don’t perceive themselves as philanthropists.” The article on makeitbetter.net, Want to Change the World? What One Philanthropy Expert Says is the Key (Noyes, June 2015), featured an interview with Debra Mesch, MBA, Ph.D., Director of the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University’s Lilly School of Philanthropy. Mesch’s goal is to get more women to proudly declare, “I am a philanthropist!” in order to “change the world for the better.” “Philanthropist” is a word with a lofty ring. It brings to mind a rich and benevolent benefactor. “Certainly, that doesn’t apply to me!” we find ourselves thinking. But to Mesch’s point, everyone who made a gift in support of St. Mary Academy - Bay View, whose names are featured in this report, can safely think of themselves as “philanthropists.” Go ahead, say it out loud: I am a philanthropist! Thank you to all you philanthropists who are making an effort to change the world for the better by investing in the education of girls and young women at Bay View Academy. Together, we are preserving the best traditions of the past and ensuring a bright future for this historic Mercy institution, so that we can continue to educate girls and young women to be self-confident, compassionate and socially conscious leaders. As we embark on our strategic plan, Bay View 2020 Vision, it is critical that we continue to build our team of philanthropic supporters. During the last four years, Bay View has enjoyed a remarkable increase in philanthropy. As previously reported, this fiscal year Bay View experienced an 8.4% increase in giving—and that’s not including the largest endowed and scholarship commitment in Academy history of $390,000. If you haven’t yet stuck your toe in the philanthropic waters, I invite you to join us. Make this the year that you give a gift to Bay View. Your philanthropy supports Bay View’s mission in a myriad of important ways. It ensures that academic excellence and Mercy values continue to be available to our students. It is used to improve our beautiful campus and enhance the infrastructure. It is invested in the professional development of our faculty and staff. I have faith in St. Mary Academy - Bay View’s strong community of supporters who share a deep commitment to Catholic, all-girls education. I am certain we will see our over 7,000 alumnae display what Dr. Mesch says is women’s innate inclination towards generosity. Francesca ‘21 C The Class Angel hallenge: Grassroots Fundraising at Its Best This January, members of the Class of 1999 reached out on Facebook to see if they could get enough of their fellow classmates to contribute towards purchasing a sponsorship angel for Manhattan at the Bay. The original goal was $300 but it was quickly surpassed, as the class worked together to raise over $1,000 to support the girls and young women of Bay View. Then the challenge was issued: Can other alumnae classes do it, too? The word spread through social media and $3,110 was raised by alumnae for the Class Angel Challenge. But what about our current students? That was the question asked by a parent at a meeting of the Advancement Committee. She wondered if we could offer the Class Angel Challenge to current families. With the principals’ permission, the Parents Guild got to work promoting their mission, which they called, “Operation Mercy Angel.” It worked! Another $3,130 was raised by the students, bringing the Angel Challenge grand total to $6,240. Consider Bay View Maureen O’Brien Viall ‘62 and her husband, Charles Viall, were featured in a donor profile in the 2014 Spring/Summer edition of Bay View Today magazine. Here’s an update on the story of their generous support of St. Mary Academy - Bay View. Maureen and Charles Viall continued to build their investment this year with a $20,000 contribution in the form of a charitable gift annuity. This gift brings them to a grand total of $40,000 invested in CGAs with the Academy. It was their gift in 2013 that prompted Bay View to establish a CGA program and also, to partner with the Rhode Island Foundation. The Foundation is the only one of its kind in Rhode Island and the largest funder of the state’s non-profit sector. With the sage advice of alumna and parent Marylu Notarianni Nadeau ‘81, we diversified our portfolio and invested the Viall’s gifts and other gifts of its kind, in a flexible endowment fund at the RI Foundation. Marylu is both a certified public accountant and the former chair of the Rhode Island Foundation’s Professional Advisory Council. Partnering with the Evelyn Nerone Kiley ‘62, Pamela Hudson Beggan ‘62 and Maureen O’Brien Viall ‘62 Foundation will provide the Academy with support and guidance around Planned Giving as we grow our philanthropic program. In addition to the Viall’s generosity of treasure, Maureen has given the gift of time. She keeps in touch with alumnae in the D.C. area and wrote to the members of her class and the classes of ‘61 and ‘63, requesting her fellow alumnae join her in supporting their alma mater. Because of her work on behalf of the girls and young women of Bay View, the class of 1962 enjoys the standing of the top fundraising class this year with a grand total of $32,405. D Her View: A onor’s Reasons for Choosing Bay View Jo Ann and her family This August, President Vittoria Pacifico-DeBenedictis and the Advancement, Communications and Alumnae Relations team welcomed alumna Jo Ann Newth Sell back to campus for lunch and a laughter filled walk down memory lane. It was her first visit since graduation in 1966 and though it’s been nearly five decades since she’s been at St. Mary Academy - Bay View, she had plenty of entertaining stories to tell of her days at the Bay. Jo remembers being very shy, and yet, for reasons she still can’t name, she joined her friends in starting a band called “The Aldines.” Inspired by the Beatles era, they got up the nerve to ask the principal, Sister Marie Andre, if they could hold a “hootenanny” at Bay View and invite boys from areas schools to campus for an evening of folk music. Though at first rebuffed, the principal eventually came around, (“I think she realized it had potential to make some money,” said Jo) and Bay View held its first hootenanny with The Aldines as the only all-girl band. Jo Ann Newth Sell Though Jo and The Aldines performed around the state at various “hootenannies” with many boy bands, Jo also told us that the boys kept their distance from her. Why? Her father was a police officer--and not just a police officer--but one with a passion for working with juvenile offenders. Gordon Newth, who passed away in 2012, made his mark in the East Providence Police Department for his expertise and interest in working with teenagers. He was an active founder of the department’s first Juvenile Division, President of the Juvenile Correctional and Law Enforcement Agencies of RI and a delegate to President Eisenhower’s White House Conference on What is an Children and Youth. It seemed to Jo that everywhere she went when she was in high school, someone knew she was Gordon’s daughter. Endowment? Bay View Though Jo hasn’t made it to campus since 1966, Bay View has not been out of her thoughts. In 2009, she made a very generous gift to the Academy to establish The Newth Family Endowment in order to provide scholarship funds to daughters of first responders. After the loss of her sister, Colleen Newth (Bay View Academy, Class of 1969) in 2006, her brother Dennis Newth in 2007, and her mother Delia Newth in 2008, Jo says she “wanted to find a way to memorialize them that recognized their commitment to education and also the sacrifices that the families of first responders make every day. Establishing an endowment at Bay View to assist the daughters of firemen and policemen was a natural choice.” An endowment is a donor fund set up to bolster the financial foundation of an institution. It serves as a permanent fund where income from the invested endowment is used for purposes set up by the originating donor. This allows the principal investment to be kept intact, giving endowed gifts a long-term impact. In December 2014, Jo added another $5,000 to the endowment, with a pledge to raise an additional $15,000 in 2015. She said she will continue to invest in Bay View because of the “excellent education” she received, adding that the school prepared her to navigate the professional world outside—a world that “presented so many challenges (and glass ceilings) for women.” The best part of her Bay View experience, said Jo, was the “no compromise expectations of the nuns. I learned to challenge myself.” Jo is presently Vice President and Principal Analyst for CEXEC, Inc., a D.C. based firm that specializes in management consulting. After Bay View, she earned a BA in Political Science from Trinity College in D.C. and a MA in International Relations from Georgetown University. She has worked with CEXEC for more than three decades and credits Bay View’s blend of single-gender education and Catholic values for her preparedness to compete in the workforce: “An all girl school definitely provided the environment I needed to focus on what I could achieve. I believe religious education provides a framework of social conscience that we keep all our lives. Combined with the ability to think critically Bay View provided me with some very valuable tools.” Through the Newth Family Endowment, Jo honors the memory of her family— Gordon, Delia, Dennis and Colleen—all while giving back to the families of first responders and the school that helped shape her.
