Santa Clara Vanguard Brass 2011 Auditions Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps brass section! This packet will serve as the primary resource for your audition experience with the Vanguard and should be your constant companion throughout your preparation. The brass team is very excited to meet and work with you, and we are even more excited to create something amazing together in the 2011 Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps! A few notes as you prepare your audition material: All auditionees should prepare and audition on their primary instrument (trumpet, french horn, euphonium, trombone, tuba). Each auditionee is expected to prepare both the enclosed excerpts, as well as the referenced etude (provided by the auditionee), at the appropriate performance tempi. In addition, auditionees should be prepared to perform any of their 12 major scales and/or a chromatic scale encompassing the full performing range of their instrument. The brass team is interested in hearing you perform at your highest level possible, so in-depth preparation is a must. All positions within the ensemble are open for audition; we look forward to hearing your very best! Throughout the audition camp, prospective members will have the opportunity to perform on a limited number of marching mellophones, baritones, and tubas owned by the corps. As there is a limited supply of equipment all auditionees are welcome to furnish their own marching instrument should they desire one, but priority should be given to transporting primary or concert instruments when travelling. Auditionees will be heard individually throughout the audition camps and will receive a formal, written evaluation at the conclusion of the camp. Each auditionee will be evaluated in the following domains, both during full-group rehearsals and their audition: Tone, Technique, Flexibility, Articulation, Musicality, Range, Adaptability Auditionees will also be given an overall numerical grouping to guide their future efforts in the audition process. Group 1: Individuals in this category are very strong candidates for membership in the 2011 Santa Clara Vanguard brass section. They demonstrate the very best in all fundamental aspects of musical performance, as well as musical maturity and an advanced ability to learn and adapt to new information quickly. Group 2: Individuals in this category possess many of the attributes desired in a future member of the Santa Clara Vanguard brass section, but might require more time to develop to their fullest potential. It is recommended that these individuals consider membership in the Vanguard Cadets or another quality drum corps to gain further experience. Group 3: Individuals in this category have many short-comings in both their fundamental preparation as well as their musicianship. Individuals in this group should seek out private instruction for further development and audition again in the future. The 2011 Santa Clara Vanguard brass section will consist of 24 Trumpets, 16 Mellophones, 24 Baritones, 12 Tubas and an applicable number of alternates on each instrument. PLEASE NOTE: No corps-owned instruments will be checked out to any potential member for home use until the brass section personnel is finalized at a future date. Please make other arrangements to have a marching instrument for your use between camps.
