Instructors score each Student Learning Assessment Task/Job Sheet using a 7-point scale. Activities listed are checked off
through the use of a score of 0 (lowest) to 7 (highest). The scale with descriptors is provided below.

Score Level of Mechanical Mastery
Performance Description
7
Master Mechanic
Successfully completes tasks/procedures within the allotted time
frame:
• without assistance,
• without needing any additional guidance or supervision,
• work performed without mistakes.

Journeyman Mechanic
Successfully completes tasks/procedures within the allotted time
frame:
• without assistance,
• with minimal additional guidance or supervision,
• work performed with only 1 fault.

Proficient Mechanic
Successfully completes tasks/procedures within the allotted time
frame:
• with minimal assistance,
• with minimal additional guidance or supervision,
• work performed with 2 faults.

Competent Mechanic
Completes tasks/procedures in a somewhat timely manner:
• with some assistance,
• with some additional guidance or supervision,
• work performed with 3 faults.
Some additional practice needed.

Apprentice Mechanic
Completes tasks/procedures in a somewhat timely manner or within
an extended period of time:
• with frequent assistance,
• with frequent guidance or supervision,
• work performed with 4 faults.
Additional training needed.

Weekend Mechanic
Completes tasks/procedures just within the allotted time frame or
within an extended period of time:
• with much assistance,
• with additional guidance or supervision,
• work performed with 5 faults.
Additional training needed.

Novice Mechanic
Does not fully complete tasks/procedures within the allotted time
frame or even with an extended period of time:
• requires much assistance throughout,
• requires lots of additional guidance or supervision throughout,
• work performed with 6 or more faults.
Additional training needed.
