Trustee Frank Tedeschi questioned the progress on building a new hospital if the Ideal Hospital board of managers were considering hiring a consultant to advise in the running of the present hospital. Mayor Joseph Caldwell explained the consultant, Earle Nicklas of Cooperstown, was hired to advise on the operation of the present hospital during the interim period while a new facility is being built. He added that how long the interim period would take could not be determined and that he concurred with the board of managers thinking in hiring the consultant. He also said the concern of the managers is to provide the best service within the available facility. Tedeschi said that • even though he could now understand why the consultant was valuable, things "look black as far as a new facility is concerned." He also commented on the lack of a timetable for the proposed Dan Crankshaft Mileage Is Low; What Can I Do? Dear Dan: My problem a gas mileage, or I should say, the lack of it. Twelve to 14 miles per gallon is all I can get my year-old car to produce. I've had the motor tuned, tried premium fuel, bought highly advertised additives, even switched brands of gasoline. The car starts good even in cold weather, and performs well generally. Do you think I should try a new carburetor? Charles D., Endkott Dear Charles: If your car performs well, you don't need a new carburetor. What you may need is a new set of driving habits. Drag racing type starts are murder on gas mileage. Avoid letting your engine idle uselessly. I've seen people make a 10-minute fueling stop without shutting off the engine. Try treating the gas pedal as though it were an egg under it and you don't wish to break it. Don't waste your money on gasoline additives regardless of whit the television commercials say. Don't buy premium gas for your car if it runs well without knocking on the regular grade. Premium gas is not automatically a better gas although it is a different gas. Your car may or may not need the higher priced fuel. Regarding the brand of gasoline to buy for best mileage, I doubt you will find any significant difference. If you own a medium-to-large size car and it's pretty well loaded with optional equipment, 12 to 14 miles per gallon may be about all you can expect. Extras such as power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and the like all need energy to operate and the only source of energy your car has is the gasoline you buy for it. Regards, DanC. Caldwell said the report from the New York-Pennsylvania Health Planning Council had only been received in June and he understood it was now being studied by possible sponsoring municipalities. He said he expected County Executive Edwin L. Crawford to convene a meeting of such municipalities to discuss their reactions. He reassured Tedeschi that both the village and the Ideal board were continuing their efforts towards a new building "with all due haste that is proper and fitting the situation." Trustee Wendell Soltis, who is also a member of the hospital board, added that the hospital was concerned with the yearly certification by the State Hospital Review Board. He said the consultant's study would allow the hospital to up-date facilities and also assist in the planning of a future use for the present hospital when the new facility is built. Caldwell and Soltis agreed that the hospital is only interested in providing "short-term, on-going service" during the interim period. Tedeschi thanked them for their explanations and requested the board be given periodic reports on the progress for a new hospital. He said the last report the board had was the beginning of the year. Reconstruction of North Street is progressing close to schedule and the section from Hayes to McKinley Avenues is expected to be reopened for traffic in mid-August, village officials learned. Other sections of the street will be done after the completion of this first segment, though the section from Lincoln to Nanticoke Avenues has been scraped to its concrete base and will be resurfaced without delay, officials said. Albert Korbar, head of the village light department, said that despite the inconvenience suffered by closing the street completely, he felt the project time had been cut from six or eight months (if one side of the street had been kept open to traffic) to approximately eight weeks. Korbar was congratulated by the board for his election as president of the state-wide Municipal Electric Utilities Association. He will take office in September. The board also approved a 400 gallon tank for low-lead gasoline to be installed at the Mobil service station, East Main and Vestal Streets.
