WELCOME
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in Year Up New York’s BMCC Campus! Please read the
following pages for important information about our application and admissions
process. This packet reviews the requirements and components of the application
process, including the supplemental material you will need to provide. In addition to
this packet, you will also receive a link via email to an online Year Up Application that
must be completed prior to your interview.
If you are not currently enrolled at the Borough of Manhattan Community College
(BMCC), you will also need to apply and enroll through the BMCC Office of Admissions
Direct Admit program. We are happy to assist you with this process. Please see page 2
to get started and contact us at any time.

ADMISSIONS TIMELINE
DEADLINE TO APPLY
December 14th, 2015
Program Start Date: January 26, 2016
Admission to Year Up is competitive.
Meeting admission deadlines is a minimum requirement
to apply and does not guarantee acceptance.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
 Be 18-24 years old
 Have a high school diploma or GED certificate by or before the program start date
 Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have an employment authorization card
 Be enrolled or willing to enroll in the Borough of Manhattan Community College
 Must be able to cover school’s tuition, books and fees, through use of financial aid,
scholarships, etc. (If you are concerned about meeting this eligibility requirement,
please speak with a Year Up representative so that we can help you identify resources
to cover tuition).
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
 Submit Year Up Application
Complete the online Year Up Application by following the link you will receive via email from the Year Up
Admissions Team. In addition, submit the supplemental materials listed in this packet on page 3.
 Register in the City University of New York (CUNY) Portal as
part of the application process to BMCC
Register as an applicant at https://portal.cuny.edu/cms/id/cuny/documents/informationpage/006373.htm.
Once you have completed the process, you should receive a student ID number which you will need for the CUNY
Assessment Test.
 Complete the BMCC Direct Admit Process
Please sign up at http://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/apply/
 Complete the CUNY Assessment Test
All qualified candidates must also take and meet the minimum requirements for program/school eligibility at
BMCC by completing the CUNY Assessment Test. You can access information about the CUNY Assessment Test
at http://www.cuny.edu/academics/testing/cuny-assessment-tests.html. Please sign up online at
http://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/testing/registration/ to take your CUNY Assessment Test. You can also visit the
testing office which is located on BMCC’s campus, 199 Chambers Street, Room S103.
 Complete the Financial Aid Process (FAFSA and TAP)
You must provide documentation indicating that you have completed the FAFSA. You can learn more about
applying to FAFSA here: https://fafsa.ed.gov/. Please note the FAFSA code for BMCC is 002691.
Once you’ve completed FAFSA, you can link directly to the TAP application. You can learn more about applying
to TAP here: http://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/apply-for-financial-aid/nys-tap/apply-for-tap.html
Please note the TAP code for BMCC is: 1404.
 Schedule and Attend a Year Up Interview
Your interview is a chance for us to learn more about you and why you are interested in Year Up. Once you have
completed your online Year Up application, you will receive an email asking you to sign up for your Year Up
interview. Please schedule this as soon as possible and arrive at least 15 minutes early. Our expectation is that you
will arrive professionally dressed – if this is a concern, please just contact us and let us know.

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS
 Identification Document(s)
Please bring photocopies of the documents listed on page 4. If you do not have a copy, please bring the
originals with you to your interview and we can make a copy for you.
 Personal Essay (2 typed pages, double-spaced)
Your answer will be evaluated for content and your ability to communicate and express your thoughts clearly
and concisely. Your essay should be formatted according to the criteria on page 5.
 Resume or Work History worksheet
 College Transcript from all prior institutions (if applicable)
 Proof of High School Graduation
Copy of your high school diploma or GED certificate
 Proof of CUNY Application Status
Please bring documentation showing your registration for the CUNY Portal
 Official Proof of Residency

 Immunization Form
Please visit http://www.bmcc.cuny.edu/admissions/afteradmitted-immunization.jsp to learn more about the
Immunization requirements for BMCC. Include a completed copy of this form

 Financial Aid – FAFSA Confirmation Page

You must provide documentation indicating that you have completed the TAP. Please visit

 Two References
Please provide at least two references according to page 6.

Essay Question/Personal Statement
Please type a 2 page personal essay that answers both essay questions below. Your essay should be formatted as
follows: 2 pages typed, paragraph form, double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font. Your answer will be evaluated
for content and your ability to communicate and express your thoughts clearly and concisely.
Essay Questions
1.) Why do you want to join Year Up and why do you believe you are a good candidate for Year Up?
2.) Tell us about yourself or your family – what is “your story”? Explain what are the personal, educational, and extracurricular experiences that have led to your interest in Year Up. Please explain why you are interested in pursuing further
study/education, and how it ties in to your personal and career goals.

Please provide us with the names of at least two references we can contact.
Examples of appropriate references include a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, clergy person, supervisor,
mentor, or other adult in your community who knows you well enough to comment on your character and ability.
(Family members and friends are not acceptable references.) If you are having a hard time identifying a potential
reference, please notify a Year Up staff member so that we can help you troubleshoot.
