The Future of Nursing Is Not Around
the Corner. It’s Already Here.
Health care is undergoing unprecedented changes, with today’s nurses expected to take on greater responsibilities and
stronger leadership roles.
Kaplan University’s School of Nursing has been anticipating and preparing nurses for these fundamental shifts in our
profession since we launched one of the first online RN-to-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs in 2004.
We’ve continued to anticipate these changes by adding doctorate and master’s degree programs with specializations
ranging from education to executive leadership to advanced practice nursing.
We know the demand for advanced education is more critical than ever—including the new standards set forth by the
Institute of Medicine in its Future of Nursing report.*
That’s why we’re pioneering a progressive approach to nursing education to prepare nurses for what lies ahead. The
challenges for nurses and educators are certainly greater. But the rewards could be, too.
Our Goal
At Kaplan University’s School of Nursing, our goal is to prepare you to make a difference in the lives of patients,
their families, your community, and society as a whole. We are here to help you develop your talent and your
opportunities. We believe the power of education fuels your motivation to remain at the forefront of the nursing
profession. We offer a continuous path of learning based on your career objectives.
Our programs are designed to allow you to balance your personal and professional life. Whether you aspire to teach,
become a nurse executive, incorporate the latest information technology trends in nursing, or provide patient care,
your career in nursing could be a rewarding personal journey fueled by the power of education.

Kaplan University History
Kaplan University offers a different school of thought for higher education. We are a leader in higher education
innovation with a heritage of providing career-focused programs for nontraditional adult students. Originally
established as the American Institute of Commerce in 1937, today the University serves approximately 49,000
online and campus-based students throughout the country and around the world.
The University, which has its main campus in Davenport, Iowa, and its headquarters in Chicago, offers more
than 180 degrees and academic programs, including master’s, bachelor’s, and associate’s degrees.
School of Nursing Mission
Kaplan University’s nursing programs prepare students to enter and advance in the nursing profession at many
levels of practice, from basic to advanced, and enable graduates to develop and apply the knowledge, skills,
and values gained from their education to serve effectively in whatever nursing roles and settings they choose.*
The School of Nursing promotes nursing education focused on providing excellent care, serving as leaders, and
being accountable and responsive to the ever-changing global health care climate.
School of Nursing Philosophy
Our programs are designed to enable individuals to combine nursing knowledge and values with skills and
strategies that foster career success at all levels of nursing practice. Our faculty believes that our school’s
nursing programs will empower individuals to successfully meet the challenges of the health care communities
they serve.
Our programs are based on the belief that students grow through the application of liberal arts and nursing
knowledge based on scientific principles and the development and use of critical-thinking skills. Our faculty
believes nursing education requires a foundation in the physical sciences, social sciences, liberal arts, and
nursing theory and research, as well as experiential learning. Nursing education should facilitate students in
becoming capable of affirming themselves as whole beings—physical, mental, and social—and prepare them
to respect and care for other persons.
This education focuses on the preparation for nurses at different levels of practice, helping to increase the
availability of nursing care for the growing population requiring health care in and across all settings. The
nursing programs are also designed to prepare students to advance nursing contributions in the communities
they serve and to participate in the growth of the profession. This model for nursing education emphasizes a
foundation of understanding and ongoing learning, and guides students to pursue additional studies in nursing.†
*Kaplan University cannot guarantee employment or career advancement. Additional certification or licensing may be required to work in certain fields.

Master of Science in Nursing
Program Overview
The Master of Science in Nursing program is designed to build on previous nursing education and clinical experience,
prepare students to pursue advanced practice in a variety of health care settings,* and lay a foundation for
doctoral education.† The program of study includes completion of the core curriculum, specialization courses, and
an evidence-based project proposal. Students can select from five specializations focused on specific advanced
practice roles: family nurse practitioner, adult-gerontology nurse practitioner, nurse educator, executive leader, or
informatics.
The family and adult-gerontology nurse practitioner specializations are designed to educate health care
professionals on the topics of how to best provide primary care as a member of an interdisciplinary team and
improve the availability of evidence-based, culturally relevant health care in diverse communities. The curriculum
is designed to help students develop skills to evaluate the health and wellness of individuals, families, and their
communities. The nurse practitioner is expected to possess skills in diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and
chronic health conditions, to deliver primary and preventive care, and participate in the development of appropriate
policy and evidence-based practice.‡
The nurse educator specialization is designed to prepare nurses to teach in schools of nursing and continuing
education, staff development, clinical education, and patient and community education programs. Graduates
may be prepared to sit for the National League for Nursing’s Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) examination.§
The executive leader specialization is designed to prepare nurses to pursue managerial positions and leadership roles
in hospitals, community health, long-term care facilities, and other health care systems. Graduates may be prepared
to sit for the Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive, Advanced certification examinations (depending on
the level of leadership with their organization) provided by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).§
The informatics specialization is designed to prepare nurses to meet the clinical, educational, research, and
administrative challenges associated with working in a technology-rich environment. This specialization focuses
on content and the representation of data and information, and incorporates computer, information literacy, and
management competencies. Graduates may be prepared to use technology and information systems to advance
evidence-based research and to pursue informatics leadership roles in health care, industry, and education settings.
Program is not currently available in Tennessee or Washington.
*Kaplan University cannot guarantee employment or career advancement. Additional certification or licensing may be required work in certain fields. Check with your
state or local licensing agency for more details.

nursing.*
The Doctor of Nursing Practice program consists of a minimum of 50, 69, 99, 105, or 115 quarter credit hours,

Master of Science in Nursing—DNP Path
Kaplan University’s Master of Science in Nursing—DNP Path allows students with a bachelor’s degree in nursing
to earn their Master of Science in Nursing and progress to the Doctor of Nursing Practice program. Speak to an
Admissions Advisor for more details.
Specializations
Students will choose from three specializations: executive leader, adult-gerontology nurse practitioner, or family
nurse practitioner.
The executive leader uses current scientific findings, evidence-based guidelines, and advanced levels of analysis
and decision making to design, deliver, and assess health care that improves the health outcomes of individuals,
families, and populations. This includes the management of complex systems, negotiation of one’s role within the
health care system, administration of nursing and health care organizations, and the development, implementation,
and evaluation of health policy and programs. Graduates prepare to function in systems-focused roles (e.g.,
administrative, public health, and policy roles).
The adult-gerontology nurse practitioner focuses on advanced clinical practice that influences health care
outcomes for individuals (focusing on adults and the elderly), families, and populations. This includes the direct
care of individual patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing and
health care organizations, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of health policy and programs.
Graduates prepare to function in direct care roles, indirect care or systems-focused roles (e.g., administrative, public
health, and policy roles), or a blend of these roles.†
The family nurse practitioner focuses on advanced clinical practice that influences health care outcomes for
individuals and families at all stages of the life cycle, and addresses care for individuals, families, and populations.
This includes providing direct care for individual patients, management of care for individuals, families and
populations, administration of nursing and health care organizations, and the development, implementation,
and evaluation of health policy and programs. Graduates prepare to function in direct care roles, indirect care or
systems-focused roles (e.g., administrative, public health, and policy roles), or a blend of these roles.
