This project is an expansion of the existing facility that involves the construction of a 4ML balance reservoir and a transfer pumping station to convey potable water to Brampton’s Beckett-Sproule Reservoir. The biggest challenge of this project is working in a confined area, as this site also houses an existing pumping station and two reservoirs. Kenaidan’s contract consists of the supply and installation of three pumping units, a transient suppressor system, a bi-fuel diesel generator (with provisions for a second generator), miscellaneous modifications to the existing pumping station, and restoration work in the existing reservoirs. “The Hanlan Transfer Pumping Station is one of the most critical facilities in the Region’s Water Transmission System,” said Matthew Bennett, Project Manager, Capital Works, Water Division for the Region of Peel. “The construction of the Hanlan Transfer Pumping Station is being completed to service future growth in Brampton and South Caledon, as well as to increase the Region’s ability to provide water to York Region.” “The Region of Peel is happy to have Kenaidan as the General Contractor for this project. Kenaidan’s past experience and expertise in Water/Wastewater projects, specifically on Region of Peel Water Pumping Stations, has been demonstrated throughout the project to date.” Kenaidan had to obtain special permits from NAV Canada, GTAA, and the City of Mississauga to erect and operate the site’s tower crane due to the close proximity to Pearson International Airport. Kenaidan is self-performing all concrete works consisting of 21,000m2 of formwork and 7,000m3 of concrete. This is a 90-week project scheduled for completion in early 2011. This is the second contract awarded to Kenaidan by the City of Barrie. The new SWTP will provide 60 ML/day to the area residents. Construction began with the excavation and removal of 115,000m3 of soil. Kenaidan is self-performing the 71,000m2 of formwork and placing 27,000m3 of concrete. As of December 2009, over 58,000m2 of formwork has been completed and over 23,000m3 of concrete has been placed. The Kenaidan team endured an especially harsh winter last year and is partially through their second. The formwork challenges in the Process building were completed in November 2009, and Reservoirs 1 & 2 were successfully leak-tested in January 2010 and October 2009 respectfully. Concrete works are 99% complete in the plant buildings and work is well underway in the garage and administration buildings, with scheduled completion in June 2010. Commissioning commenced at the Low Lift Pumping Station in January 2010, moving through the flocculation area and the primary membranes. GE will start on-site in early February 2010 to commission the primary and secondary membranes. The plant is scheduled to produce water in June 2010, while the project is scheduled to be substantially complete by September 2010. Leadership College The Leadership College is a 3-year multi-dimensional program that focuses on developing future leaders for the organization. The program includes classroom training, cross functional rotations through various departments, mentoring, and targeted development plans to ensure that participants obtain the required work experience to advance their career. There have been a total of 12 graduates from the Leadership College to date. Congratulations to the 2009 Leadership College Graduates: (L to R) Andrea Mrezar, George Moraru, and Patricia Pereira Safety Corner Kenaidan has been a long standing partner of the Safety Group program, which is sponsored by the Ontario General Contractors Association and recognized by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario. 2009 marked Kenaidan’s ninth year in the program. Thanks to our employees and their dedication to health & safety, we were able to successfully fulfill the program requirements. As we approach our tenth milestone year, we will be concentrating on the continuous development of our health & safety program by focusing on the following areas: • Hazard awareness and recognition, tied into our JSA program. • Operational Controls, which includes work processes and safe operating procedures. • Physical demands analysis, outlining physical requirements of various positions and tasks within those positions. Program developments in these areas will aim to increase hazard awareness, provide our teams with additional training in hazard recognition and facilitate communication of good work practices. As a result of these developments and changes, we hope to see a decrease in on-site injuries and incidents which pose a risk to the health and safety of our team. Pumping Station project team. Congratulations to all of this year’s safety award recipients, and for our teams’ achievements in 2009. To acknowledge individual achievements within our program for 2009, CETA awards were presented to Team Kenaidan members who demonstrated the principles of this core value both on the job and within the community. Last year’s recipients of this award include: Goretti DaSilva, Daniel Demkowicz, Paolo Di Carlo, Charlie Hutchings, Donnie Linstead, Glen MacNeil, and Cory Rodgers. Kenaidan also recognizes project teams through the Giuseppe Cavlieri Safety Award, which is presented to a project team that has exemplified a commitment to on-site safety. This year’s recipient was the Hanlan Transfer Patricia Pereira n NE W S L ETTER Kenaidan Core Values Last fall we rolled out our Core Values to 220 Kenaidan Employees at our IMS Night. Our journey to define our Core Values began as a result of the challenges we face as a growing company to stay true to the values that make Kenaidan a great place to work. In early 2009, 27 employees representing all areas of our workforce were asked to participate in a series of focus groups. Participants generated many ideas around what they think our values are as a company, and from this process our Core Values began to take shape. These ideas were summarized and refined by a group of senior leaders into the following 4 values: p o i n t Of INT e r e s t Integrity We act with Integrity by being honest and accountable, by demonstrating ethical conduct, and by building trust as individuals and as an organization. Valuing Integrity requires us to be responsible stewards of corporate resources, our communities and the environment. CETA We Care Enough to Act (CETA) by reaching out to intervene with issues or potential problems. Whether we are identifying a safety or environmental hazard, assisting with a business problem, or offering personal support, CETA is making the extra effort to help someone else. Operational Excellence We achieve Operational Excellence through leadership, innovation, problem solving and quality workmanship. We are committed to meeting customers’ needs with costeffective and on-time project delivery. Positive Work Environment We develop all employees to reach their maximum potential, while encouraging an appropriate work/life balance. Every person in our diverse workforce is respected for their contribution, in an atmosphere of open communication, teamwork and fairness. Integrity Care Enough to Act (CETA) Operational Excellence Positive Work Environment Working in conjunction with the written values, our Core Values logo captures the idea that employees driving each of the Core Values forward will advance our Mission as a company. As Kenaidan continues to grow it is essential that all of our employees are aligned with what we stand for as a company; that we understand and support the values that should govern our business decisions and the relationships we have with each other. Our Core Values will serve as the guiding principles for how we will operate our business now and into the future. Throughout 2010 we will be running orientation sessions on the Core Values for all employees. Environmental Initiatives In 2009, Kenaidan achieved certification under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. While certainly a great accomplishment, we must now focus on the continual development of our environmental program. In 2010, areas of improvement shall include: • Expanding Core Training requirements for Field Operations staff to increase environmental awareness. • Identifying areas of our EHS Program to improve the visibility of the environmental program by incorporating environmental items into current H&S Tools (ex. Tool Box Talks, Joint Health & Safety Committee, etc). • Improving waste management awareness and practices for Field Operations. • Increasing subcontractor participation in the corporate environmental requirements of our projects. With the increase in environmental best practice requirements by Owners, it is imperative that Kenaidan continues to develop our environmental program by providing employees with proper training. Kenaidan’s ability to effectively manage the environmental components on projects such as Duffin Creek WPCP is a prime example of this. As we continue to be involved with LEED projects, we will sharpen our environmental focus. This will allow us to keep abreast of continuous changes in environmental requirements and regulations, and ensure that our clients are well served.
