ON THE COVER:
Artist: Claudia Teal • White Hill Mansion, Fieldsboro
The Federal-style White Hill Mansion was built in 1760 on a bluff overlooking the Delaware River. The Field family – the town’s namesake – had a plantation consisting of orchards that,
when in bloom, gave the name “White Hill” to the village. After many architectural changes in the late 1800s to the Queen Ann style, the house eventually became a popular restaurant.
A major restoration project is now the mission of the Friends of White Hill Mansion.
Dear Community Members:
The Northern Burlington Regional Chamber of Commerce Calendar
Committee is pleased to present this 27th Edition of “Hidden Treasures”
Calendar.
Through this endeavor we continue to provide art scholarships to graduates
of Bordentown Regional High School, Northern Burlington Regional High
School and Florence Twp. High School. For the year 2014, the calendar
presented a $850.00 scholarship each to Erika Pajarillo (BRHS), Marilyn
Tartaglia (NBHS) and Ashley Swiderski (FTHS).
The calendar continues the tradition of featuring local artists. A “thank you”
to all of the artists participating in this year’s calendar. Special thanks go
out to the generous advertisers who make this calendar and the scholarships
possible.
The 2015 Calendar Committee wishes to thank the Historical Societies of
Bordentown, Chesterfield, Springfield, Mansfield and Florence for their help
in suggesting historical sites to be used in the calendar, and for providing the
site background.

The Original
Columbus Grange #58,
Columbus
Built in 1910 on Atlantic
Avenue, the original Columbus
Grange #58 was the social
center of the farming
community. In addition to
it being used for dinners,
meetings, education, and
entertainment, the hall was
a farmer cooperative for the
selling of coal, seed, sundries,
and other items. In 1938, an
arsonist burned it down.

Indian Ann Home,
Shamong
Indian Ann, born Ann Ashatama, was the
daughter of Chief Lasha Tamar, and was one
of the few Leni Lenape who resisted being
relocated to the Oneida Reservation in the
1800s. She became locally known for her
basket making and married twice: first to
Peter Green, a former slave, and then to
Civil War serviceman John Roberts. Ann was
the last Lenape to live in Burlington County.

The Burtis Farm,
Mt. Holly
Sixth generation farmer Burt Myers
cultivates a vegetable garden with a
1935 tractor which his grandfather
purchased in 1945. Beside Bert
stands the old 1850s mill which was
once used to separate the seeds from
shocks of rye, wheat and barley.
A shock is a number of sheaves
(a bundle of the crop) set on end in
the field to dry. When the sheaves
dried, the heads of the shocks were
cut off and shaken with the help of
a hit and miss motor. After the seeds
were released and collected, some
were kept for next year’s crop, while
others were sold to make flour. The
remaining seeds stayed at the farm
where Burt’s great grandmother
Lydia Burtis, would grind them and
make bread for the family. One of
Mrs. Burtis’ happiest days was
when Jester the Bond Bread man
delivered the first loaf of bread to
the Burtis farm, thus ending her
daily bread-making ritual.
Bert, his wife Paula, and son Robert
are the current residents. The farm,
established in 1864, is also home to
the Clarksville Sod Farm.

4 East Chestnut Street,
Bordentown City
Present owners Bonnie and Steve have
lovingly restored this 18th century
colonial, which sits diagonally on
what would have been farmland.
The original owner of the land was
Daniel Farnsworth, who presented it
to his daughter Susannah in 1732.
She and her husband Daniel Hunt
had the dwelling built in 1751.
This is one of the earliest homes in
Bordentown, with many features
typical of the era, such as a Dutch
door, two corner fireplaces, handplaned paneling, gunstock posts, and
evidence of a compact spiral staircase.
The kitchen and mudroom were
added to the left end of the house
in the early 1800s. In the kitchen
is a large fireplace as well as a baking
oven, which was discovered during
renovations in 1999. At this same
time, floor boards were removed from
the attic and restored to be used in
the kitchen. The front porch was built
in 1890 and is the perfect spot to
enjoy the park-like front yard.

In 1717 Joseph Borden settled
here, bought up a substantial
part of the land and changed
the town’s name to Borden’s

packet line from Philadelphia
to Bordentown. Travelers
would stop and rest in Borden’s
Towne and then board the
Borden Stage for Perth Amboy
where they would make their

fathers of the new republic

Smithville Mansion,
Mt. Holly
Smithville Mansion,
located in Mt. Holly, is
part of a complex that
began as a mill area. Built
by Jacob Parker, Jacob had
purchased the land from
Solomon Southwick in
1776. In 1831, Jonathon
and Samuel Shreve bought
and expanded the facilities
to become a cotton
manufacturing center,
and named it Shreveville.
In 1865, Hezekiah Bradley
Smith purchased the town
and renamed it Smithville,
making further improvements that kept operations
running for the next
hundred years. Hezekiah
served as a New Jersey
Senator from 1883 to
1885. In 1975, Smithville
was acquired as Burlington
County’s first park.

The Distinguished History of Bordentown, New Jersey
by Harold Morrison Smith
DEAN OF THE BORDENTOWN MILITARY INSTITUTE
“Would you like to learn American History first hand? You will find it
recorded in the story of the quaint old town at the upper end of the Delaware.
Up the quiet streets beneath the old trees, have passed the makers of this
nation’s history – in peace, the lordly landowners the estates of Berkeley and
Carteret, or a poor runaway lad named Benjamin Franklin stopping for the
night at Mr. Brown’s house on his way to Philadelphia. Here still stands the
great elm under whose shade they say Thomas Paine used to lie, pondering
perhaps, on his great philosophy of the rights of man or living over again his
part gathering to the defense of New York in ‘76; the stragglers of
Washington’s army retreating from Von Donop’s Hessians who occupied the
town as the center of the British line just before their defeat at Trenton;
Washington and his generals riding through town on his way to victory at
Yorktown; Lafayette triumphantly received in his visit to Bonaparte; Lincoln
a traveler while in Congress on his way to New York.
In the old brick mansion still standing beneath two ancient buttonwoods
lived the Hopkinsons – Francis, “The Singer” and Joseph his son. Both were
eminent jurists, and both were writers of songs. Look upon the Great Seal of
New Jersey; Francis Hopkinson designed it. He probably designed too, the
American flag of Betsy Ross. Over the grave of Joseph in the old cemetery of
Christ Church is the inscription, “Here lies the author of ‘Hail Columbia.”
Across the street from the Francis Hopkinson House lived Patience
Wright, first American sculptress. Her earliest experiments in modeling were
made, as housewife, in dough upon her cookie board. Later, having won fame
in America, she went abroad to win greater fame in England under the
patronage of George III and his Queen Charlotte. It was a son of this same
Patience, who became a friend of Washington, lived in his house, painted his
portrait, and designed some of the first American coins.
On the bluff above the Delaware is Bonaparte Park, here a century ago
lived an exiled king of Spain, Joseph, brother of Napoleon. His castle has long
ago disappeared, but still, in the crumbling ruin beneath the earth and
pierced here and there by gnarled tree roots wind the arches of the brick
tunnels which were built to provide escape from the king’s abode if the enemies he feared should seek out his refuge here from across the sea.
Revered by the American public greater than any king or lord, was Clara
Barton, the little woman who founded the Red Cross. She was first a school teacher
and she first taught in Bordentown in the small red school house still standing.
Writers, artist, soldiers, and sailors – if you call the role of those who have
made this town their home, you will list names honored throughout the world:
Commodore Stewart, commander of “Old Ironsides”; Thomas Buchanan
Reade, author of “Sheridan’s Ride”; Richard Watson Gilder, poet and editor;
Frederick Waugh, great painter of the sea; the list lengthens indefinitely.
There are a few old towns where history has loved to play a distinguished
part; such is Alexandria, Virginia; such is Concord, Massachusetts and
such is Bordentown.”
