Math 121 – Calculus I – Sections 502 and 701
Time: TR 6:00pm-7:50pm, Room: Matheson 407
Instructor: Simon Foucart, Korman Center 269, foucart@math.drexel.edu
Office hours: T 8:00pm-8:30pm, W 1:00pm-2:00pm, R 5:00pm-6:00pm, or by appointment
Course web page: http://www.math.drexel.edu/˜foucart/teaching.htm
Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 9th Edition by H. Anton, I. Bivens, and S. Davis
(Wiley and Sons)
Prerequisites: It is assumed that students entering MATH 121 have completed four years
of college preparatory mathematics including Algebra I and II, Geometry and Trigonometry.
Course Format: There are 4 hours of class every week. Typically, 3 hours are devoted to the
presentation of the basic theory, and 1 hour is devoted to the solutions of homework questions
and other problems.
Homework and Quizzes: Homework is an integral part of the course and is assigned every
lecture. The homework questions have been chosen to illustrate the concepts and techniques
expected to be mastered. You are encouraged to come and see me during my office hours to
obtain some help on particular questions, provided you made a genuine attempt to solve them.
Notions introduced in homework are likely to appear in the weekly quizzes. Each of these 10
quizzes is worth 5 points. Moreover, the course incorporates online homework assignments
through the Wiley eGrade Plus system. You must therefore have a Wiley Plus access code for
the course. This code, which also allows you to view the entire textbook online, comes with
new textbooks purchased from the Drexel bookstore, or may alternatively be purchased at
www.wiley.com. There are 8 online assignments to be completed during the quarter. They
are generally open for 2 weeks, except for the first and last ones which are open for 3 weeks.
They contribute to a total of 50 points. All questions carry the same weight, but late online
assignments suffer a 50% reduction in the number of points earned.
Extra Help: In addition to the office hours, you can receive extra assistance in the Math
Resource Center (Korman 247). The Resource Center is open Monday through Thursday from
10:00am to 7:00pm and Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
Exams: There are 3 in-class tests during the quarter, each of which lasting 1 hour and worth
100 points. The final cumulative examination, which is scheduled during the examination
week at the end of the quarter, lasts 2 hours and is worth 200 points.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is not compulsory, but it is expected and recorded. Classes
to be missed due to religious holidays must be communicated to me during the first week.
Students are required to arrive on time and stay the length of the class. If they do not attend
a class, they are responsible for any announcement made, any material covered, and any
additional topic introduced during this class. Office hours cannot be used for this purpose.
1
Electronic Etiquette: Laptops are for note-taking only. Any student using a laptop for
other purposes forfeits the right to use it in subsequent classes. Cell phones must absolutely
be put on silent mode and left closed. If you have a family emergency and need to take a call
during class, I shall be notified in advance so that a special arrangement can be made.
Academic Honesty: Drexel’s policies described in the Student Handbook govern all work
subject to credit in this course.
Accommodation Procedure: Students with disabilities requesting accommodations and
services need to provide me with a current Accommodation Verification Letter before any
accommodation can be made. These letters are issued by the Office of Disability Services.
Grading: Grades are based on the work shown, not on what was intended or implied.
Excessively sloppy, poorly justified and disorganized work cannot be given full credit, even if
the correct answer appears. The quizzes and online assignments contribute to a grade out of
100 points. The in-class tests contribute to 3 grades out of 100 points. The final examination
is worth 200 points, counting as two equal grades out of 100 points. The lowest of these 6
grades is dropped to give a total of 500 points. The usual percentage scale is then used for the
final letter grade, that is
F: 0–59%,
D: 60–69%,
C: 70–79%,
B: 80–89%,
A: 90-100%.
Make-ups shall not be given, aside from exceptional circumstances such as illness or injury.
They are only allowed with my prior approval. In fairness to other students, if a make-up is
granted, a grade point penalty is applied.
