Ref: 12598 Wrecclesham & The Bourne/0308/5300/KN Working with you and partner organisations, your local Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team tackles neighbourhood issues that matter most to you. Come along to one of our local Panel Meetings or Surgeries to tell us what you'd like to see us working on together. Each of Surrey's 106 Safer Neighbourhood Teams has a Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (an NSO - who is a Police Constable), Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and Special Constables (community volunteers with police officer powers). Together they know your area, are visible and easy to contact. You may read or hear in the local media reports that Surrey Police is restructuring. These changes are at a Force level and won't affect your local Safer Neighbourhood Team - Surrey Police will continue to have 106 such teams, working with you to create safer neighbourhoods. You’ll find the latest updates, news and dates of future Neighbourhood Panel Meetings and Surgeries on our web pages at www.surrey.police.uk. To contact Surrey Police or to report a crime or an incident call 0845 125 2222. Only call 999 in a genuine emergency requiring urgent police attendance. If you want to give information anonymously on a crime or criminal activity call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 This newsletter has been printed on FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited paper. Please recycle after use. The Wrecclesham Panel recently voted environmental issues - general rubbish, overgrown hedges and poor street lighting - to be the neighbourhood’s chief priorities. In partnership with Waverley Council, the Safer Neighbourhood Team is now making great efforts to make the area a cleaner, more pleasant place to live. The Panel was also concerned about anti-social behaviour by youths and the riding of motorbikes, large and small, at Riverdale and on the recreation ground, the rugby field and in the quarry area. Increased police patrols appear to have quelled these situations. And warnings have been issued to several of the inconsiderate motorbike riders. The refurbishment and reopening of Wrecclesham’s Community Centre now offers alternative pastimes for youngsters. Karate and boxing clubs are already running and the youth club was relaunched in February. Karen Phillips on patrol in The Bourne Rowledge Rowledge is a safe place to live, with just ten crimes committed last year. However, the area has suffered a number of house burglaries of late. Patrols have been increased in an attempt to catch the offenders and to offer reassurance to residents. We urge all householders to ensure that their property is safe and secure. In further efforts to combat the long standing speeding issue in the Bourne, PC Simon Anderson and Casualty Reduction Officer PC Dave Thomas recently undertook a speed survey in Frensham Road. We are awaiting the results and will update you as soon as possible Meanwhile, our sincere thanks go to all our Community Speedwatch volunteers who are regularly seen out with the speed gun in their own time. Do you want a Police Surgery? PC Simon Anderson organised a Police Surgery in the Bourne some years ago but attendance was poor and he has yet to repeat the exercise. Likewise a meeting with the council, fire service and police was organised three years ago at Rowledge Village Karen providing reassurance in the community Hall - but only one person turned up! We stress that Police Surgeries offer the opportunity to express any concerns in a meeting with a Community Officer. Please consider this, and let us know if you would like us to arrange a Surgery in the near future. Dave is slowing things down Waverley’s Casualty Reduction Officer, PC Dave Thomas, has responsibility for all road safety issues throughout the borough. Dave is a member of the Casualty Reduction Action Group (CRAG), which is a partnership group. CRAG enables him to call on the expertise of our partner agencies to set up casualty reduction initiatives. Dave explains: “Some of these projects are aimed at young students approaching driver age or who are already scooter riders. We also run a School Speedwatch scheme for younger children.” Regular campaigns are run throughout the year to tackle drink-driving, in-car mobile phone use and child seatbelt restraints. “We’ve also had success in making our roads safer through Community Speedwatch,” said Dave. “This involves residents monitoring speeding motorists and reporting them to the police. Speedwatch schemes are set up in several Waverley neighbourhoods.” Working Together: Local and county councils, housing associations, health and welfare agencies and education authorities are just some of the organisations working alongside your Safer Neighbourhood Team. In addition to all of this, Dave monitors the borough’s accident statistics and carries out intelligenceled targeted enforcement at casualty Hot Spots. Vehicle crime prevention advice The arrival of warmer weather invariably brings an increase in the number of cars broken into in beauty spot car parks (although not as many as those burgled while parked at the roadside). Most thieves are opportunists looking for an easy way to break into a car likely to contain a mobile phone, a handbag, a sat nav system or other valuable items. We urge you to remove all valuables before leaving your car unattended. This includes sat nav holders - and always clean off those tell-tale sucker marks from the windscreen. Please note: a loud alarm system deters criminals as it will attract witnesses when activated by an intruder. And, if there’s a choice when parking, avoid isolated areas and look for a spot that is in the open and well lit. Incidences of car thefts in which the thief first steals the keys, are on the rise too. Several expensive cars have been stolen after the driver has left the keys in the hallway or on a kitchen table. A thief has either broken in or used a hook to remove them - before driving off in the car. After locking your car, always ensure that the keys are not left on view. Finally, if you keep tools in your van, they are more likely to be stolen if you don’t fit an alarm and a metal cage/chest to keep them in. For further advice please visit the Surrey Police or Home Office websites, or contact Waverley’s Crime Reduction Advisor, John Robini, on 01483 631623.
