New-look notes: Bapu in, Ashoka Pillar out

ops smart, counterfeiters smarter. Innovation
is the name of the game. The jaali note has the look.
And it’s fast gaining currency.
And, seemingly, state-of-the-art
printing technology and safeguards put in place to protect
the real McCoys have flopped.
So far so bad. Enter the latest
master-stroke of the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI). To make
duplication of currency a difficult proposition, the apex bank
has taken the decision that the
image of the Ashoka Pillar will
be replaced by that of Mahatma Gandhi in all notes.
‘‘Admittedly, the image of Bapu already features on curren-
cy notes; but so does the Ashoka Pillar emblem. Our
aim is two-fold —not only
will this step help check counterfeiters, it will bring
uniformity among currency notes of different denominations,’’ informs a senior
RBI official, ‘‘Now, we will
begin the process of retrieving from circulation all notes bearing the emblem of
the Ashoka Pillar. Ultimately, only the Mahatma Gandhi series will be circulated.’’
And this could translate
into bad news for counterfeiters. After all, the additional security features attendant on the Mahatma Gandhi
emblem make it difficult to
fake. ‘‘The Mahatma Gandhi emblem comes with opti-

cal variable ink; micro-lettering and latent imagery;
identification marks; and a
special alignment with respect to the centre of the note,’’ maintains the official.
Initially introduced in
1949, the Ashoka Pillar, incorporated as a watermark
in the left window of currency notes, was printed till
1996, when the Mahatma
Gandhi series — which is
equipped with additional
security features — was issued for all denominations.
‘‘While notes bearing the
Ashoka Pillar emblem will
be phased out, we will also
ensure that such notes are
accepted at bank counters,’’
says the RBI official.
Data reveals that a total
number of 2.31 lakh currency
notes worth a combined Rs 5plus crore were seized last year.
‘‘However, the actual figure is
definitely much higher as there
is no mechanism in place to
ascertain the quantum of fake
currency notes in circulation,’’
says a senior official of the National Crime Records Bureau.
According to the RBI official,
‘‘We have installed fake-detecting machines at our branches
across the country. ‘‘In any case, changing the design of currency notes is an ongoing exercise which the RBI adopts to
avoid counterfeiting.’’ Maybe,
the image of Mahatma Gandhi
on currency notes will succeed
in bringing the common man
freedom from jaali notes.

‘Any film’s release date involves strategic planning’

tributors and us. A lot of strategic planning is going on as of now as we need
to set a date. We will release 600 prints
of Boom worldwide.
Was there any specific reason for launching the music of Boom at the
Cannes Film Festival?
Well, we wanted to be different and derive maximum mileage —and we have
managed to get what we wanted.
Is it true that Boom director Kaizad
Gustad and Padma Lakshmi fought
and Lakshmi walked out only to be
brought back later?
Boom has been enveloped by a lot of rumours, and this is one of them. I don’t
know who spreads such rumours. Yes,
there were difference of opinion and
this exists everywhere. But, at the end
of the day, everybody proved to be professional.
Any plans of working with Kaizad
again?
He is fantastic. And he has translated
on screen what he conceived in his head. We haven’t decided to work together again, but we may.
Why has your other film Sandhya
been delayed?
There were certain problem to do with
the sound recording, which we had to
redo. Because the stakes accompanying Boom are higher, we will release it
before Sandhya.

A Dutch marathon runner has been banned from a
gym for sweating too much.
Peter Schlink, from Rotterdam, had used the treadmill at Tussendijken

a week for the last four
years.
But the gym has now
banned the 31-year old
civil servant after other
customers complained he
was sweating too much.
Schlink doesn’t deny that
he sweats a lot while
training, but insists he
wipes it all up after he has
finished running.
‘‘The room isn’t air-conditioned, so the sweat is
leaking on the floor. But I
clean it every time I leave
the platform,’’ he told Algemeen Dagblad.
‘‘They also reproach me

But a spokesman for
the gym said: ‘‘We had complaints from other customers that he trains excessively and sweats too

any more to us, therefore
we stay with our decision.’’

e have always wanted to do
this. Put Nafisa Joseph in the
dock. We got our chance recently. It was a no-holds barred
inquisition and we should say
that the slender-as-a-willow lass took it all in
her boot-clad stride.
Rewind to the year when she won Femina Miss India. Nafisa, all of 18, had a different story to tell. ‘‘I remember saying I
wanted to get into politics. And then I became more worldly-wise. But you can’t call
that a promise. If I have to do something I
just go ahead and do it,’’ she
says. What about all those
winners who promised to
work for world peace?
‘‘They’re different people in different circumstances. I can’t comment.’’
Next on our hit-list was Nafisa the VJ. Despite being slotted as a brain-dead profession
by many, it’s one she quite enjoys. ‘‘There’s
nothing brain-dead about talking about music. We have to think on our toes. We have to
be up-to-date with change, about trends and
issues around us. You need to have your senses about you and be alert all the time.’’
W
Nafisa too has followed in the footsteps of her
predecessors to tinsel town. But, does she really see herself in 70 mm? Acting is definitely
out. ‘‘The serial Cats was a really good experience, but I don’t want to do TV. The hours
are terrible and they don’t pay on time. Right
now I am really happy with what I’m doing
because I am doing what I like on my terms
and not for anybody else. I’ve been toying
with the idea of singing, but for that I need to
be inspired,’’ she says.
Will Nafisa earn the title ‘India’s JLo’ (we
are not talking about the infamous butt)?
Nafisa’s past relationships with
Bangalore-boy Sameer Malhotra and then Mumbai actor
Sameer Soni (she was engaged
to both men, but one at a time) are still talked
about. Right now, she is onto Mr Right No 3,
or so they say. But, what does she have to say
about it? ‘‘You live and learn. Everybody experiences break-ups. It’s only because I am in
this profession that people hear about them,’’
she says. Still, Nafisa admits that she can be
a little impulsive. ‘‘I just go by my heart.’’ And
she spoke to us straight from the heart.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Whatever the pressures you’re under from the world around you,
matters on the domestic front must and should
take first priority. Ignore them now and not only
will issues that currently merely need attention become more
complicated, certain individuals will be upset. The faster you
move, the simpler life will be.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) You are by no means
narrow-minded. Yet there are certain plans or ideas
that you’ve never taken seriously. Suddenly, events
force you to regard these in far more positive light.
This fresh perspective could lead to changes as exciting as they
are profitable in the structure of your domestic or working life.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Rarely have you been
so well positioned to take advantage of potentially profitable situations. But making the best of
them demands that you make your needs clear
and stand up to certain rather tricky individuals. While this
won’t be easy, your efforts will be more than justified by what
you get in return.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22 ) Others may be in a
hurry. But you owe it to yourself to reflect on the
insights triggered by the recent Cancer New
Moon. You’re likely to have recognised certain activities, ambitions or even relationships as no longer rewarding. As important, whatever future goals come to mind deserve serious thought.
LEO (July 23 - August 22) For ages you’ve avoided certain subjects, thinking that since you couldn’t do much about them, you’d just ignore them.
Now events revolutionise your attitude towards
these matters. In fact, the more willing you are to discuss
them openly, the faster you’ll overcome what you previously
considered to be completely unconquerable dilemmas.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22) Nobody’s better
than a Virgo at keeping track of what’s going on. Yet
this week’s extraordinary developments are likely
to surprise even you. Waste no time trying to figure
out what you didn’t spot these earlier in the game. It’s far
more important that you take full advantage of them, however unexpected they were.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) The last thing
you feel like doing is reorganising things. But as
each day of this remarkable week unfolds, you become increasingly aware just how important even
minor shifts could prove to be. The trick is to view all arrangements as tentative. This ensures you can make additional
changes without further upset.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) If ever
there was a time to take a chance on the unknown, unfamiliar or unexpected, it’s now. True,
this kind of impulsiveness if totally out of character. But your instincts must be telling you that the events triggered by Jupiter’s rare and fantastic aspect to your ruler Pluto are once in a lifetime opportunities.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
While this week’s extraordinary developments may
not be a surprise, that won’t reduce your delight in
what’s taking place. If there’s anything to keep in
mind, it’s that even now you must keep a close eye on details
and practical requirements. This prevents minor mistakes
from becoming more serious dilemmas in the future.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) It’s not
surprising that you feel under pressure to make
swift decisions. While you can’t entirely ignore
certain matters, you can do what you least want
to, which is make tentative arrangements. This enables you
to rearrange things around mid-July’s Capricorn Full Moon,
when both your priorities and your position will be considerably clearer.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) You’re going to have to be patient with others. It may seem
that they want to talk about nothing but business
or financial matters. But the fact is that there are
certain decisions that really shouldn’t wait. Let them take the
lead in these first, then you can focus on other far more interesting subjects.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20) You undoubtedly felt that you made the best of recent extraordinary developments, so aren’t even thinking about
undertaking further changes. Yet that’s exactly
what you’re going to be dealing with over the next few days.
Unsettling as this notion seems, what’s on offer will more
than justify whatever disruption you face.

Coldplay’s first two albums

sensitive, reflective songs that
offer a calming break from the
relentless pessimism and aggression of ‘90s rock.
That positions Coldplay as
one of the few bands in years

part of the edgy young alt-rock
crowd and accessible enough
for mainstream pop fans.

Yellow, the enchanting
ballad that lead singer
Chris Martin wrote
three years ago in a moment of bliss, and
many will likely wonder if a new love song,
Moses, was inspired by
Martin’s

and that’s good. He’d

Coldplay’s mission: to bring
heartfelt music back to mainstream
rock. And the band is poised to pull
it off, says ROBERT HILBURN
scored in Q magazine’s
review of the group’s
last, Grammy-winning
album, A Rush of Blood
to the Head.
‘‘By now, we are accustomed to seeing great
bands falter at the edge
of the big time as we are
watching the England
football team crumble in
the quarterfinal,’’ wrote
critic Dorian Lyneskey.
‘‘It doesn’t make them
any less inspiring, but
wouldn’t it be nice, every
now and then, to see one
go all the way?’’
This is a band that understands the importance of restraint, even
when it is trying to revive a lost
tradition in rock. You sense
that same restraint in the band
members. Despite all that is
happening around them, they
don’t have to work at being
down to earth when they stop
by a breakfast-hour KROQ-FM
show at the House of Blues in
West Hollywood before heading to San Diego. A lot of bands
do these promotional chores
begrudgingly, but the four guys
in Coldplay are so cordial that
one of the fans asks, during a
Q&A session, how they stay so
grounded. Martin seems genuinely surprised by the question. ‘‘We don’t think we are
that grounded,’’ he tells the
fan. ‘‘We get whisked from
here to our hotel rooms, then to
a nice venue to play for a lot of
nice people. It’s pretty easy to
stay happy.’’
