Big Love: A Biography of Lama Yeshe
Chenrezig Institute is an amazing place. Founded in 1974, the first FPMT centre outside of India and
Nepal, it is also one of the biggest and most successful. Over the years many wonderful teachers have
lived and taught here. Incredible teachings have been given and last year His Holiness the Dalai Lama
dropped in. How fantastic! And while all this it totally interdependent, none of it would have happened
without Lama Yeshe, our precious guru and founder.
These days, the number of FPMT students who met Lama Yeshe gradually decreases. By far the majority
don’t know much about him. But all that is about to change. Next year the Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive
(LYWA) will be publishing Big Love, Lama’s authorized biography. Melbourne journalist Adele Hulse spent
eighteen years researching, compiling and writing thousands of pages detailing Lama’s life and teachings.
The book is also the story of the early years of the FPMT, the international Buddhist organization that
Lama founded in 1975 and now directed by Lama’s heart disciple, Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Adele edited her
material down to what now looks like being a set of two 600-page volumes with hundreds of historic
photos, full colour throughout. For the past four years LYWA has been preparing this huge manuscript for
publication.
- Nick Ribush (Director of the LYWA)
You can help the LYWA to finance the initial print run of Big Love by making a donation to the LYWA at
Chenrezig Institute. We are committed to raising $20,000 towards the effort and are grateful to have this
opportunity to help Nick, Adele, Ven. Connie, and all at the archive realize Lama’s wishes.

Because Lama is a bodhisattva, even talking in
an ordinary way when Lama says something,
laughs, makes a joke, it gave so much
happiness in the other’s mind. Somebody
might think, ‘Oh that doesn’t have much
meaning’ but the reality is that just a few
words and a laugh from Lama have great
benefit for some people.
Their heart
becomes totally transformed from the
depression, the life that made them so
unhappy. That is how Buddha and
bodhisattvas guide sentient beings.

Lama’s skill and capacity, which grows
continuously without degenerating, his being
able to do all these other things – I think that
is the most unbelievable thing. That is Lama
Yeshe’s real capacity. Lama’s particular skill
fits exactly with what is needed right at that
time, even with just one smile, a few words
that make people so happy and gives them
great hope.
After Lama passed away many more Tibetan
geshes came to the West and then realised it
is not easy teaching Westerners. More and
more they realised that Lama had some
special capacity, that Lama was special in
guiding sentient beings, especially in bringing
Dharma and teachings to the West.
Whatever Lama does is purely for other
sentient beings. Many times every day he
would say, ‘I’m resting and eating this food, but not for my pleasure. It is for others.’ Lama used to ask me

to eat more food. It was very
normal for Lama to say. ‘I’m
not doing this for my
pleasure.’
He often said
that.
That is expressing
bodhicitta. It looks kind of
simple, but is actually a very
high level of mind.
One time in Delhi, in reference
to one particular male student,
Lama told me he never gets
angry
with
sentient
beings. When Lama shows the
wrathful aspect he is just
showing the wrathful aspect.
Lama is not angry. You can
imagine that to become like
that is not easy.
When Lama was resting in the
farm house in Delhi, His
Holiness was asked whether or
not Lama should have an
operation in the West. His
Holiness said to do the
operation. Lama said, ‘It does
not even matter if the operation is not successful, because I have used my life enough as a servant for sentient beings. So I
don’t care whether it is successful.’ Lama had no fear about death and was fully satisfied about how his life had been spent,
serving others. That is a great teaching, a great example for students to follow.
The conclusion is not to waste this precious human life, to continue your own practices and develop your heart in the path to
enlightenment for the sake of sentient beings. And on that basis to serve and help sentient beings and offer the teachings of
Buddha wherever one can. So it means to develop compassion and wisdom and then benefit others as much as one can.
There were not many centres during Lama’s time, but they have continued to be created and there are more and more every
year. This is Lama’s blessing, Lama’s prayer, the result of Lama’s activity.
At the centres I speak first about the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, then sometimes I say that even though they have
not met Lama, every single Dharma they learn by coming to the centre, is due to his kindness, as is every single karma that
gets purified, every single merit that is collected. By reading the Lam-rim prayer every day you become closer to the path of
liberation and enlightenment, and so closer to liberating all sentient beings.
All who meet Dharma is due to the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. To those who meet the Dharma by coming to an
FPMT centre, I say this is because of Lama Yeshe’s kindness. Even though you haven’t met Lama, you learn from the resident
teachers. All this education happened due to Lama Yeshe, so therefore you are all receiving Lama Yeshe’s guidance.
-Text and pictures from Big Love reprinted with the permission of Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive
I think the absolute most fortunate thing during my life has been to
meet Lama Yeshe.
Just the mere thought of remembering Lama begins a river of love
instantly flowing from my heart, wishing all sentient beings to find
everlasting happiness!
I can't wait for Lama’s autobiography to be available for all to
read, I think it will bring so much happiness and joy for anyone
who reads it, or even hears Lama’s name or even sees the cover!! I
sincerely hope that we will all be able to raise the remaining
amount of money needed to publish this book -Lindsay Pratt

Art Projects Update
As any recent visitors to the property will
have noticed over the past weeks the new
art studio/workshop is finally a reality. Like
most of the major projects that are
undertaken at our center it was not easy.
When we signed-off on the contract we
had approximately half of the funds
required and three months to find them.
Our deepest thanks go out to all of those
people who helped in so many ways,
particularly those who offered donations,
both direct and in the form of interest-free
loans. This is another Lama Zopa Rinpoche
inspired project so we can all rejoice in the
merit created by following his advice.
The art studio will serve a variety of
functions; the mezzanine level will be used
as a work area for artists to create thangka
paintings and a variety of other artwork
from decorations to new images suitable
for making molds. This area also gives us
the opportunity to have a much better
facility for holding artist workshops, courses etc. at the
same time freeing-up the Community Room for other
courses.
The ground-level area will be the main work area for
statue-making and all of the work currently being
completed for the Garden of Enlightenment.
The outdoor area, under the verandah will be for more
large-scale casting and anything that is a bit messy.
We have just completed the flooring on the mezzanine
level and the stairs, which were not included in the
original cost, the final council inspection is complete
and next comes power which will be an expensive
phase as it has to come underground from the Family
center.
Once we get things properly under way, this project will
help support Dharma artists and Chenrezig Institute.
As more funding becomes available we will put a veranda
along the front of the building. There will be beautiful
landscaping with water-features and areas for displaying
some of the larger things we will be making so that we
can encourage visitors to stop for a look.
It has been a quite busy year combining all of this work
with the ongoing commitments at the Garden of
Enlightenment where we hope to have everybody’s
stupas out in the gardens by the end of Winter.
The third project we are aiming to have finished before
the weather gets too hot is the entrance gate at the front
of the property; several stages have been completed but
there is still a lot of work to be done.
Once again, many thanks to all the dedicated and
generous people that continue to help with these
projects.
Sincere thanks, Garrey Foulkes

Engaged Buddhism in the Library
Spring 2012
The world has reached a number of crisis points
– impending environmental disaster, political
stagnation and an excessive use of the earth’s
resources. We feel helpless in the face of such
vast problems. But before we are able to
contribute in even the smallest way we need to
understand the nature of the dilemma. It will
help to make contact with those who have a

situation and can offer possible solutions. What

One of this anthology’s contributors – American
scholar and teacher David Loy - analyses how
the three poisons of greed, delusion, and ill-will
drive our political systems. Sound a bit harsh?
Just imagine how discussion, compromise, and
co-operation – all potentially mindful activities –
could change political systems across the world.
Our next book – A Buddhist Response to the
Climate Emergency – tackles a very specific
environmental
problem: that of climate
change. Also an anthology, it is described as “a
clarion call to action and a bright beacon of
hope”. Contributions from the Dalai Lama, the
17th Karmapa, Thich Nhat Hanh and Matthieu

and its origins. After the purely scientific
interpretations that we are used to from media
sources this book offers Buddhist analyses of
the causes of the catastrophe facing the world.

Everything Depends on Attitude
with Geshe Lobsang Jamyang and Tenzin Tsepal
Cherishing the I opens the door to all suffering, while cherishing others opens the door to
all happiness –Lama Zopa Rinpoche
We understand the importance of motivation and attitude, how they affect the
quality of our work and the results we can achieve, the same is true in our spiritual
practice. Ultimately to help others the most we need to achieve enlightenment and
enlightenment depends on first generating bodhicitta. So we need to aspire to be
a Bodhisattva; one who possesses the compassionate motivation of bodhicitta, but
how?
The great Bodhisattva Shantideva wrote verses known as the Bodhisattva Attitude,
Geshe Jamyang will guide us through the meaning behind these verses and their
importance in helping us to set our motivation, to inspire us to become budding
Bodhisattvas. A commentary on the Bodhisattva Attitude verses by Khunu
Rinpoche Tenzin Gyaltsen is the subject of His Holiness’ teachings in Sydney 2013.

The Source of Suffering & Liberation: a Meditation Retreat
with TY (Thubten Yeshe)
A weekend of focused meditation, supported by teachings and discussion, an
excellent way to learn how to meditate on the stages of the path, and to find
balance in one’s own daily study, reflection and meditation. The teachings of the
Buddha, and our own personal experience, are all contained in The Stages of the
Path to Enlightenment (Tibetan: lam-rim). In this series of short retreats we explore
this amazing experiential process in depth, slowly working through the sequence of
meditations in the lam-rim.
All are welcome; however, some previous knowledge of The Stages of the Path will
enhance participants’ experience.
Studying these teachings is a bit like doing construction work upon our mind. This is not
always easy, but some of its aspects make it less difficult; we don’t need money, laborers,
technicians, or technology. Everything we require is already there, within our mind.
Therefore, with the right kind of effort and awareness, mental development can be easy -His

Our True Potential
with Geshe Lobsang Jamyang and Tenzin Tsepal
When the Buddha became enlightened he realized that all beings without
exception have the same nature and potential for enlightenment, and this is
known as buddha nature. Without wisdom and compassion, it is impossible to
become a Buddha, but if one possesses even an embryonic amount of these
qualities, one can them develop them to their ultimate level and become Buddha.
The most concrete proof of the presence of Buddha Nature is that we all possess,
to varying degrees, these qualities of wisdom and compassion. Geshe Jamyang will
teach us how to recognize our own Buddha potential and how to activate it.

The Mind App
with Lozang Tsultrim (Carla Pearse)
The Mind App workshop offers a new and unique approach to managing the
impact of increasing demands and less time that characterize our lives. Without
effective tools to deal with daily pressures, we easily succumb to stress, mental
anguish, and emotional imbalance, resulting in frustration and ill health.
It is possible to handle these challenges with clarity, effectiveness, and a relaxed,
positive mental attitude. Managing the mind is the solution.
Not just a talkfest, the Mind App program covers the theory, practicalities, tools,
and techniques of mindfulness training and how to adapt the knowledge to any
environment to get our lives moving in rich, full, and meaningful ways. Boost
productivity, increase team effectiveness, reduce stress, and greater focus - just
some of the outcomes you can expect.
Scientific studies published in Australia and around the world document the boost
mindfulness makes to productivity, creativity, confidence, family/team harmony,
individual health, and personal happiness. Targeted Mindfulness training could be
the single-most effective development program you invest in; for yourself, for your
family, for your team, for your company, for your life!
If you’ve already completed a one-day mindfulness course with Tsultrim, come for
the 2nd day of the Mind App to add more practical mindfulness-based tools to
your arsenal.

Training the Mind a SPONSORED course
with Geshe Lobsang Jamyang and Tenzin Tsepal
Composed by the Buddhist Master Langri Tangpa (1054-1123), Eight Verses for
Training the Mind is a highly-revered text from the Mahayana Lojong (mind
training) tradition.
These instructions offer essential practices for cultivating the awakening mind of
compassion, wisdom, and love. This eight-verse lojong enshrines the very heart of
Dharma, revealing the true essence of the Mahayana path to liberation. Even a
single line of this practice can be seen as encapsulating the entire teaching of the
Buddha. For even a single statement of this mind training practice has the
incredible power to help us subdue our self-oriented behaviour and mental
afflictions
Chenrezig Institute is delighted to sponsor the facility fee for this weekend course.
We are able to sponsor your facility fee from time to time by allocating 5% of
everything purchased in the shop to our sponsorship account. Another 5% goes
straight to the library, so shopping at CI has many benefits!! .

About Guru Puja
Twice a month, based on the Tibetan calendar, the
practice of Tsog Offering or Guru Puja is performed. It is
a commitment for those practicing tantra to restore and
reaffirm their vows and pledges. However, anyone and
everyone is welcome to attend this ritual of making
extensive offerings to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas,
accumulating the positive energy needed to progress
along the spiritual path.
Participants can bring food or flowers as offerings to add
to the offering made by the centre. The ritual and
offering takes just over an hour. If you have a bell and
dorje,or mandala set you are welcome to bring them and
participate in the ritual, or just come and try to chant
along, most of the puja is chanted in Tibetan with the
traditional tunes

Stop Struggling, Start Flourishing
with NeLi Martin and Rachel Collis
Whether you’re lacking confidence, coping with loss, working in a high-stress job,
suffering from shyness, preparing for a big challenge in your life, or just wanting
to be happier, healthier, and more fulfilled – in the space of just 2 days, you will
learn scientifically-proven techniques to:











reduce stress and worry
rise above fear, doubt and insecurity
build genuine confidence
handle painful thoughts and feelings far more effectively
break self-defeating habits
develop the ‘resilience mindset’
improve performance and find fulfilment in your work
develop self-acceptance and self-compassion
let go of inaccurate and misleading (but very popular) ideas about happiness
build deeper, more satisfying relationships and, above all,
create a rich, full and meaningful life
Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) is a mindfulness-based approach in
psychology that enables us to get our lives moving in rich, full and meaningful
ways.
A key component of ACT is ‘mindfulness’: a transformative mental state of
awareness, openness and focus. In a state of mindfulness, you can let difficult
thoughts and feelings freely flow through you, without getting caught up in them
or pushed around by them, and without getting into a struggle with them.
Mindfulness also enables you to engage fully in what you are doing, to maximise
your pleasure and fulfilment, or enable peak performance.

About Tara Puja
Tara is the female manifestation of the buddha's omniscient mind.
Reciting the 21 Taras' prayer with devotion - remembering Tara Singing
praises and reciting mantras at any time of the day or night - protects you
from fear and dangers, and fulfils all your wishes -Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
There are many inner obstacles that hinder the development of our wisdom
and compassion. These inner obstacles in turn create external obstacles. For
the success of our Dharma practice, we are advised to rely upon a special deity
or buddha, such as Tara. All the enlightened activities of the buddhas manifest
in this female aspect, Tara the Liberator, in order to help living beings to
successfully accomplish their goals. Tara is quick to respond to our prayers.
Here are some of the benefits of praying to Tara. In the future, you will: Achieve success in your career and business - Increase your wealth - Excel in
your studies - Be protected from fears, harms and dangers - Gain good health and auspicious energy - Obtain good
rebirths in your future lives - Complete the accumulation of both merit and wisdom - Quickly attain enlightenment.
Tara puja is a mix of Tibetan and English and takes about 60 mins during which we offer tea and cake

Advanced Programme News
Spring 2012
We have completed the third round of teachings in the Buddhist Studies
Programme with great rejoicing! What an amazing achievement – 15 years
of intensive study of the most important texts, advised by Kyabje Lama Zopa
Rinpoche, encouraged by His Holiness Dalai Lama and taught by our precious
teachers, Geshe Tashi Tsering and Geshe Lobsang Jamyang – assisted by
various wonderful tutors. Over the 15 years well over 300 people have
attended one or more of our study programme modules and in 2008 we
congratulated our first group of graduates – students who had successfully
completed all the core subjects at the centre, the retreat commitments and
the final exam set by FPMT. And in March 2012 the original 9 students were
joined by another five.
Now we take a break from the Basic Programme subjects to devote an
extended period to the study of the Middle Way view.
In 2012/13 we are offering teachings on Madhyamaka, at the level of the
FPMT Masters Programme, Those who satisfactorily complete this teaching
will receive full credit should they wish to continue the Masters Programme

About Medicine Buddha Puja
Many eons ago, seven bodhisattvas strongly prayed for the temporal and ultimate happiness of all sentient beings, that
their names become wish-fulfilling in order to heal both the mental and physical sicknesses and diseases of sentient beings.
They vowed that their prayers will be actualized during these degenerate times when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha
are in decline. When they became enlightened, one of the ten powers of a Buddha is the power of prayer - that means that
all the prayers that have been made get fulfilled. As the Buddha's holy
speech is irrevocable, you can wholly trust in their power to quickly grant
blessings to help all sentient beings in these degenerate times. They are
called the Seven Medicine Buddhas, the main one is `Lapis Buddha of
Medicine, King of Light'. Buddha Shakyamuni taught the teachings on the
Medicine Buddha, and according to one tradition, is also considered as
one of the Medicine Buddhas, and hence the Eight Medicine Buddhas.
The seven Medicine Buddhas manifested in order to pacify the obstacles
to the achievement of temporary happiness, liberation and the ultimate
happiness of full enlightenment. They are powerful in healing diseases as
well as for purification. The Medicine Buddha practice can be used to
help purify those who have already died and liberate them from
suffering. It is also very powerful in bringing about success, both
temporary and ultimate.
The Medicine Buddha puja is in English and takes around 60 minutes

HOUSE-SWAP
OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE, STUDY, SERVE at CHENREZIG
A rare opportunity to do all of the above. Due to circumstances and commitments for my
son's ongoing growth and development I am wondering if there is a student out there
who might be interested in doing a house-swap with me. I am looking for a 2 or 3
bedroom house on the Sunshine Coast between Coolum and Tewantin. My house at
Chenrezig is also 3 bedroom, with carport, rainwater (for cooking, drinking etc.) and
dam water (for toilet flushing and washing machine,) large verandahs, and great view
into rainforest gully with daily visits from king parrots, doves, scrub turkeys,
goannas, and the occasional carpet snake. I would be considering for a period of at least
one year, but if mutually suitable then longer.
Please, only students genuinely interested in the opportunity for deepening and
consolidating their connection and refuge to the Teachings.
Call Colin on 0404 312 834.
