Two Meter Numbers on NGC Meters
Please be aware some NGC meters (UNL Network) have
more than one number on them.
You will notice a sticker that will says:

The number that is printed on the meter above the bar
code.
Reading Instructions
The readings that appear on the display may vary from site to
site. This depends not only on what rate they have been
programmed to monitor which would be up to 10 rates or a
combination (1 rate, 2 rate, 4 rate, 8 rate etc) but also when
they were programmed / installed, as these programs are
continually under review.
They can take into account times of the day and or week.
Summer and winter rates can also be included. Using these
meters offers customers more variety.
Multi Rate meters should have a seal in place. This prevents
accidental resetting of the Kva and wrong readings being
displayed. If you come to a meter that is not sealed, please
take the reading and then RESEAL it!

How to Display Reading
You are going to come across mechanical meters that have
not completed their “cycle” and you see two numbers
showing in the display (as shown below).
We keep it nice and simple.
You enter the digit you see the most of.
Example:
Enter 8 as your reading digit
In the case where the digits are smack bang in the middle
of each other (as shown below):

Resetting KVA or MDI (Maximum Demand Indicator)
The effect of this is to 'reset' the Maximum Demand to zero
and place this months / previous MD reading into 'Util'.
Step Action

Cut the seal on the Resetting Button. Important to use
snips to cut the seal. Do not try to break the seal as these will result in the meter button being damaged.

Hold down the top button.

While the top button is depressed hold the bottom button
down (for a approx 2 seconds).
“Top, bottom, fingers off” this is a good saying to use

The word “reset” will appear on the display. This needs
to stay visible for some time (longer than 30 seconds)
If you see the word “reset” flash up then disappear very
quickly – you have not reset the meter correct.

Eliminate Errors

As you can image it is extremely important that the reading
you captured is accurately recorded your reading.
Attention to detail is extremely important!
What Can We Do To Eliminate Errors?
It’s quite simple really.
1.
CHECK the METER NUMBER and NUMBER OF DIALS
on EVERY METER matches your handheld of specials
information before recording a reading.
2.
ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK the reading you recorded
matches what is on the meter, BEFORE you press
enter on the handheld or leave the site.
If it does not match start the process again.
3.
Slow down when recording the readings. Pay
attention to what you are doing to ensure you do not
transpose numbers.
4.
DON’T GUESS! If you come across a meter that you
are unsure of, phone and ask how to read it.
5.
TALK YOURSELF THROUGH the steps of reading clock
meters. Slow down. Look at the direction of the pointer – has the pointer gone Past the Zero and completed a cycle?

The 'Util' Mode
Not normally a Meter-Reader Operation
This is accessed by depressing the bottom button. To give
you a bit of background this function gives access to
whatever "Util” has been programmed to provide (may vary
widely from meter to meter) however the common
readings would be . . .
All readings from the previous 'reset' period i.e.

KWh

KVA (MD), p

Plus possibly various others including selfdiagnostic Word, MD date and time, etc, etc.
If left 'untouched', the meter will remain in this mode for
approx 30 seconds before self-resetting to its normal
mode.
If you accidentally push the bottom button and the “Util”
shows on the display Do not panic!
Don’t touch any of the buttons until the “UTIL” disappears
from the display in approx 30 seconds.

What Do You Need to Be Looking Out For?
Keep an eye out for any Revenue Risk or $$’s lost.
VERY IMPORTANT!!! Please look out for abnormalities on the
display such as . . ...
Phase Failure:
Applicable to CT and Whole Current Meters (indicates if a
potential fuse has blown / removed on the CT meter or that
the potential link may have been tampered with on the whole
current):
Phase Failure is ONLY indicated when the PPM is displaying
the time of day.
Three horizontal segments shown at the end of the time
display are used to indicate phases .
You should NOT SEE any any marks / segments after the
time , if you do please notify the office.
Reverse Power
If one of the current inputs into the meter has been incorrectly
wired then on the same 'time-of-day' display as above there
will be an "r" displayed (as per the above example).

Self-Diagnostics
There are a large number of different makes and models
of meter available and in use. We will take a look at the
most common meters you will see. These meters will fall
into one of the 4 Meter Types listed below.
New technology is constantly being developed and made
available.
If the display is showing ERROR # then please notify office.
Take Note of Date and Time
You need to ensure that the date and time is correct on
these meters, if you notice that either is not correct then
please make a comment on your Reading Sheet, informing
the office of what you found.
Clock Meter
** You only need to report time differences on meters
programmed with 8 or more readings.
This meter has a disk that spins which
is attached via a rod to a wheel mechanism.
There is a buffer of 10 minutes so anything under this we
don't need to know about.
You will need to indicate what the meter problem was in

Read all meters from LEFT to RIGHT and finish at the unit 1
(Don’t read the 1/10 digit).
When reading clock meters TAKE YOUR TIME !!
a)
Take notice of the direction of the clock:
Clockwise or Anticlockwise
b)
The pointer always follows the direction of:
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, 2, ………...
c)
Once a clock has completed a cycle it moves the
clock on its left onto it’s next number.
d)
When the pointer is directly in-between two
numbers you enter the lower number (in other words
the number of lesser value).
e)
When the pointer is directly on a number look at
the clock to it’s right to determine where it is in it’s
cycle. HAS THE POINTER GONE PAST THE ZERO?
If it has then the clock on it’s left will be on the higher
number e.g. on its NEW CYCLE.

You will notice that your handheld meter number and the
Actual meter number sometimes do not match – your
handheld often has more numbers than the actual meter.
Normally it is part of your job to update the details in your
handheld so they correspond with what you are seeing on
the meter.

pending on the area you are in.

This is the actual meter number you should
see on the meter
We have been requested NOT to update the handheld
information UNLESS the meter number section of the
handheld meter number is incorrect.
There have been discussions with Mercury Energy and
Contact into the reason why we want our meter number
details to represent what we actual see and have the
Contract Energy code deleted.
However this is not going to be possible Mercury and Contact
insist on keeping those identification codes.
Why are there more numbers in the handheld than on the
meter?
What does this mean for you?
You will still see the identification codes in the handheld
which will not be on the actual meter.
The meter owner (e.g. Contact Energy) has their special
identification codes entered along with the actual meter
number. See the example below to understand how the
number is made up and what the codes are for.
Action Required:
Only update the meter number if the actual meter number
section is incorrect.
