Issue 01/2014 February [Teachers at the former Bukit Timah Railway Station as part of the OE module of the Diploma in PE Programme (in-service)] What’s this all about? This is a bi-annual newsletter to update and excite teachers about what is happening in Outdoor Education in Singapore schools. A note from Roy Lee, Assistant Director, Physical & Sports Education (Outdoor Education) Food for Thought “It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature’s gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.” Jimmy Carter Dear PE Colleagues, A Happy New Year to all! 2014 is an exhilarating year for us as it is the first time that Outdoor Education (OE) is included as part of the PE Curriculum to enable our students to be confident and comfortable in the outdoors. I urge all of you to explore diverse possibilities in the teaching of the OE syllabus and provision of the quality outdoor learning experiences (such as walks, camps, journeys) for our students. With a team of committed HQ staff in the OE Section and dedicated teachers teaching OE, I believe we can inspire our students to develop the necessary attitudes, skills and knowledge that are essential for them to thrive in the future. What is your vision for OE and the Outdoor Learning Experiences that you will provide for your students? How can we better support you in the teaching of the OE syllabus? You can email me your thoughts at Roy_Lee@moe.gov.sg. I look forward to hearing your views. What’s coming up at the MOE Adventure Centres! Enhancements to the Centres will be made in Semester 2 this year. These include caving systems, edible gardens, outdoor cooking areas and more outdoor adventure facilities. These will provide a more diverse range of educational facilities to enhance the students’ learning experiences at the Centres! More information will be provided in July! 1 Professional Development Courses in Outdoor Education in 2014 Title of Course Teaching Outdoor Education in PE (Primary) Teaching Outdoor Education in PE (Secondary) Designing and Implementing Meaningful Camping Experiences and Outdoor Learning Journeys Instructors' Course for MOE Outdoor Adventure Facilities Overseas Trip Planning Course Refresher Course for Instructors on MOE Outdoor Adventure Facilities TRAISI Code 91363 91365 91367 91642 90383 90214 Duration Course date/s 1 day 1 day 2 days (residential) 5 days 3 days 1 day 3 Mar (Mon) or 9 Apr (Wed) 4 Mar (Tue) or 10 Apr (Thu) 27-28 Mar (Thu-Fri) 5-9 May (Mon-Fri) 9-11 Jul (Wed-Fri) 2 (Thu), 7 (Tue), 10 (Fri), 13 (Mon) Oct Contact us Roy Lee (Mr) Roy_Lee@moe.gov.sg Primary School Curriculum Team Cindy Ng (Ms) Cindy_Ng@moe.gov.sg Doreen Foo-Chng (Ms) Doreen_Foo_Chng@moe.gov.sg Chew Ting Ching (Ms) Chew_Ting_Ching@moe.gov.sg Johnson Lock (Mr) Johnson_Lock@moe.gov.sg Secondary / Pre-U Curriculum Team Susanna Ho (Dr) Susanna_Ho@moe.gov.sg Kuang Yoke Wee (Mr) Kuang_Yoke_Wee@moe.gov.sg Era Sidhu (Mrs) Cheong_Era@moe.gov.sg Tay Chiew Guat (Ms) Tay_Chiew_Guat@moe.gov.sg Useful Resources & Links Pri 1 & Sec 1 OE in PE lesson plans Go to OPAL- OPAL/Gateway/Subject/Physical Education/2013 Events Safety Notification: Enhancing Safety of Adventure and Camping Activities (GA/09/13) Framework for the Management & Operation of Climbing Walls and High Challenge Courses in Schools o http://intranet.moe.gov.sg/schoolsafety o Do approach us if you are thinking of building adventure facilities such as climbing walls and we will assist you with the safety considerations and design process!
