A warm welcome to METPACK 2014. For the eighth time already, the large family of the
international metal packaging sector is congregating at Messe Essen. And it is a great
pleasure for us to be able to greet you at the world's premier fair in one of the most
­important economic centres in Germany.
Every three years, METPACK becomes the central meeting place of the sector. Here is where
the global know-how in the metal packaging industry is reflected. Here is where the sector
closes its deals. Here is where users and manufacturers enter into discussions and researchers
and practitioners exchange opinions. Literally the whole world meets up at METPACK: ­
In Essen, around 240 exhibitors from 27 countries are presenting their innovations probably
to more than 7,000 trade visitors from over 100 countries.
Thus, METPACK is not only following up its record year in 2011 but the high number of
exhibitors and visitors is also showing: Essen is the undisputed number one for the marketing
of innovative solutions for everything to do with the manufacture, refinement, painting and
recycling of metal packaging.
As is already a tradition, METPACK is coinciding with interpack in Düsseldorf on three
days – a plus for the packaging experts from all continents. They can visit two fairs on just
one trip. A free shuttle bus is linking both fairs and is simplifying the travelling in addition.
Hence, METPACK 2014 is offering an ideal forum for new contacts and good business.

More than 240 exhibitors will come to Messe Essen on May 6 –10
Record number of participants in METPACK 2014
In 2014, METPACK will invite the international metal packaging
industry to Messe Essen for the eighth time already and the world‘s
most important meeting place in the sector can look forward to a
record number of participants this year. More than 240 exhibitors
(from the highly specialised medium-sized enterprise to the market
leader) will use METPACK in order to introduce their innovations
for the manufacture, refinement, painting and recycling of metal
packaging here. For the first time, they will occupy an area of more
than 21,000 square metres for this purpose. These good figures
impressively highlight that the metal packaging industry is on the up.
The international significance of METPACK as an innovation showcase,
a business platform and a networking forum will be undiminished
on a high level: 80 percent of the exhibitors will come from abroad
and companies from a total of 27 nations will be represented in
Essen. They will encounter a very international public at Messe
Essen: Around 7,000 trade visitors from over 100 countries will
be expected and will want to gain a comprehensive overview of
the market at the world‘s premier fair.

METPACK 2014 will once again illustrate the state of the art and
the latest level of knowledge in the sector along the entire value
­added chain. Manufacturers of machines and facilities for cans,

companies from the fields of painting and printing installations,

METPACK Conference will promote know-how
transfer
The METPACK Conference will ensure the high-ranking exchange
of specialist ideas. In the Berlin Hall on May 7, 2014, it will bring
manufacturers, users and developers together for discussions. The
basis will be provided by the lectures delivered by eight international
experts who will examine the subject of “Modern Global Canmaking”
in detail this year. Visitors can register for the conference on line

On May 8 –10, the dates of METPACK will coincide with those of
interpack. A free shuttle bus will connect both events so that visitors
will be able to use the synergetic effects of both trade fairs in a

May 7, 2014: Metpack Innovation Award
will acknowledge pioneering achievements
Every three years, innovations in the metal packaging sector are
in the spotlight at the global METPACK fair. Particularly forwardlooking innovations are distinguished with the METPACK Innovation
Award. In 2014, this “Oscar of the Metal Packaging Sector” will
be presented in the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories for the
­second time.
Sensory Analytic, LLC won the sector‘s first
oscar in gold in 2011
In 2011, Sensory Analytics, LLC was the first winner of the
METPACK Innovation Award in Gold. The US manufacturer was
honoured for its SpecMetrix measurement system for the coating
thickness and the film weight. In its statement of reasons, the jury
praised, above all, the great savings effect for coating material.
The METPACK Innovation Award in Silver went to Soudronic AG
in 2011. The Swiss company was distinguished for its ring pull
­solutions for peel ends which, according to the jury, permit lower
film thicknesses without any loss in quality.
The German manufacturer Schuler Pressen GmbH & Co KG received
Bronze in 2011 for the ICON V Drive Bodymaker which combines
vertical cupping with the DWI drawing and ironing process.
The jury primarily highlighted the savings possibilities resulting
from the utilisation of material with a higher initial strength.
The innovations in 2014 are now being awaited with bated
breath. All the exhibitors were able to submit products – an expert
jury will select the best submissions. The main criteria will be
­reducing the costs and raising
the quality during the production ­

International experts will provide information
at the Metpack Conference on May 7, 2014
In May, Essen will be the meeting place of the global metal packaging
industry. From May 6 – 10 companies from all over the world will
present their products and services at the leading international fair
“Metpack”. With the Metpack Conference on May 7, the fair will
offer its visitors the opportunity to obtain information about modern
metal packaging technology in lectures delivered by international
speakers.
The Latest News from Theory and Practice
At the Metpack Conference, nine international experts will give an
overview of new technologies and the latest research results. In
this respect, the organisers have placed particular emphasis on
crosslinking theory and practice. Therefore, the speakers will inclu­
de not only scientists but also entrepreneurs, technicians and ana­
lysts from the sector.
The conference will be opened by Anders Linde, Secretary General
of Metal Packaging Europe. MPE represents the complete metal
packaging sector and Mr. Linde will demonstrate the permanent
nature and sustainable future of our metal substrates.
The collaboration between toolmaker Sandvik and canstock producer
Constellium investigates the interface between tool and aluminium.
Trial methodology and experimental devices will be shown to
­correctly simulate the ironing process of 2 pc beverage cans, thereby
delivering promising first results. Vision Experts will present a tech­
nical solution to detect print defects and colour issues at full speed
of modern printing lines. Also coating measurement saw some
­exciting developments over the last years. US based Sensory
Analytics will report on a method to determine in real-time the thick­
ness of wet coatings on metal surfaces. The application of sealing
compounds onto non-round ends incorporates specific challenges.
Dr. Hachmann-Thiessen of Grace Darex will review new copylining
technologies and discuss performance attributes of compounds
specifically formulated for these systems.
Downgauging of Easy Open Ends goes along with increased
­demands for the steel specification and its mechanical characteristics.
Arcelor Mittal will explain that numerical simulation and Finite
Element Analysis are suitable tools to predict these properties.
The BIOCOPAC project aims to turn agricultural waste matter into
bio-based coating resins. Salchi will report on the status and perspec­
tive of this project. Brazilian canmaker Brasilata invented a design
for DG-approved containers that enables significant downgauging
and material savings while maintaining performance standards.
Tinplate market analyst Rodrigo Vazquez will give an overview
about current tinplate market movements and elaborate on macro­
economics and price drivers.

Technical study on interactions between metal and tools during production of 2 pc aluminium beverage cans
Sandvik and Constellium have started a technical partnership to study interactions between the metal and tools during
production of 2 pc aluminum beverage cans: the final goal is to develop for the canmakers the best solution (metal
and tools) which maximizes line efficiency (tear-off), can surface quality (brightness), metal savings (heavy or fat can
prevention) and tool life. Methodology combines industrial scale runs (CRV prototype line) with severe ironing conditions,
experimental ironing simulator tests, force sensor acquisition and numerical modeling. The list of investigated parameters
is very wide and includes: aluminum roughness, surface layer microstructure, bodymaker tool geometry, surface finish,
carbide and steel grades and the number of ironing dies (two vs. three). Preliminary results demonstrate interest and
efficiency of the approach.

Improving print quality in metal sheet decoration by automated in-line inspection
The presentation will provide detailed information on the capabilities, the technical approach and the benefits of a
100% quality inspection solution for metal sheet decoration. We will explain what kind of printing flaws, colour deviations
and other process related defects are detectable. It will be demonstrated how the early detection of deviations can be
used to optimize both quality and efficiency in metal decoration. We will address the points of view of both technical
managers and press operators during the presentation. Although the technology itself is new and complex, the audience
will learn that such systems can be very easy to use and have reached a very high degree of reliability. A series of
­practical results from different installations at can manufacturers will be presented.

Advanced methods for accurate thickness measurement of pre-treatment, wax, lubricious and protective coatings on metal
Lubricious coatings are applied onto metals in advance of processing such as body and end making, metal stamping
and other metal forming processes to minimize contact between tooling and production materials. Inadequate or poorly
applied lubricious coatings can cause various production and quality issues. Pre-treatment layers and lubricious
­coatings can also include waxes, post lubricants and cupper lubricants. The presented non-contact method can be
used by coil coaters and metal container manufacturers for accurate off-line or in-line coating thickness or weights
measurements in real-time. Manufacturers face significant current challenges in applying the correct amount of lubricious
coatings as there is no existing technique that accurately measures thickness. The proposed measurement method
­analyzes optical wave properties such as reflection, polarization and phase change to measure ultra-thin coatings as
low as 0.01 microns in milliseconds.

Copylining technology for non-round can ends
Application of can sealing compound onto non-round can ends requires a special approach, one that is very different from
application onto round ends. Recently new technologies have entered the market to allow compound application onto nonround ends through a nozzle–either by moving the gun around the end profile, or rotating the end while shifting the gun
position. This paper will review these new copylining technologies, and compare them to the older platen die and shower­
head liners. New can sealing compounds have also been formulated specifically for these new application methods, and
the performance attributes of these compounds will be discussed.

Numerical Simulation: A powerful tool to define the most adapted steel specifications to lightweighted Easy Open Ends
The growing environmental pressure from the packaging chain and the increasing competition from other packaging
media have triggered a strong interest in can weight reduction and downgauging as an efficient way to save manu­
facturing cost. As far as the Easy Open Ends (EOE) are concerned, higher strength steels with enhanced elongation
are required to compensate for the thickness reduction and continue to meet the demanding fillers’ pressure requirements.
This combination is very critical to ensure a safe rivet forming sequence varying from a canmaking line to another. A
­s
a consequence, steel specifications (gauge, strength and ductility) have to be fine-tuned to better meet specific canmaker­
requirements. To achieve this objective, the use of numerical simulation is a powerful tool to provide each canmaker­
with a tailored-made steel solution, thus opening the way for further downgauging up to 30% for current easy open ends.

Bio-based lacquers for food metal cans
The cultivation and processing of tomatoes is the largest agricultural business in Southern European countries. The
European project BIOCOPAC proposes an innovative application of the industrial tomato processing by-products which
are produced in large quantities. A consortium has joined forces to develop a natural bio-lacquer to be applied on
the internal and external surfaces of metal cans for foodstuffs. The new lacquer will have as main component the
­biopolymer cutin extracted from the cuticle of the fruit, which has the potential to replace conventional lacquers. ­
First developmental results of the resin are promising in particular for solvent-based varnishes.

A new solution for cans containing dangerous goods
The new regulation in Brazil for the practices recommended by the United Nations for the transportation of dangerous
goods (ANTT 420, 2004) has imposed a great challenge for the manufacturers of square cans. In the case of paints
and other solvent-based chemical products, the regulation defines a drop test. This is particularly critical for the 18 liter
square can, and may cause the seam to break. Traditionally one would increase the steel gauge and introduce a triple
seam. But Brasilata’s R&D team has conceived a system to relieve stress applied to the seam during impact. The studies
led to a solution in which the energy of the drop is absorbed by an increased deformation of the body.

Take a deep breath and enjoy the spring – the Gruga Park directly
next to the fair site invites you to do just that. The green lungs of
the city centre in Essen cover an area of 70 hectares and are
­enticing with shadowy trees, green sunbathing meadows, colourful
flowers - and culture. Quite a lot of sculptures can be admired,

Would you like more culture? The Folkwang Museum, one of the
most renowned German art museums, is located just 15 minutes‘
walk away from the fair site. Outstanding collections of paintings
as well as sculptures from the 19th century, classical modern, art

featuring the fashion mogul and photographer Karl Lagerfeld in

Just three underground railway stations away from the fair site,
there is one of the best opera houses in the German-speaking region:

World Cultural Heritage Site called Zollverein. Immerse yourself in
the industrial culture of the Ruhr region and enjoy exciting architecture, nature and gastronomy in the former coalmine and coking

station in 25 minutes. Tip: The Ruhr Museum on the site provides
an entertaining and graphic introduction to the natural and cultural

Do you simply want to stroll around a bit, perhaps to eat something delicious and, if at all possible, even to get to know some
natives on occasion? Perfect. The main artery on the going-out
scene in Essen is located just five minutes‘ walk away from the fair
site: the Rüttenscheider Street – lovingly called “Rü” by the
Esseners. Over a length of around two kilometres, the sauntering
mile prettily lined with Japanese cherry trees offers proprietor-­
managed boutiques, first-class restaurants, hip galleries, cosy cafés
and sociable beer gardens in flying changes. Essen congregates
here when the evening begins. And it is no rarity to turn the night
