Ortega) Friday, June 3, 2016 – Please note that the Friday workshops are occurring at the same time as the FridayFree classes so if you are attending one of these workshops, you will not be able to attend FridayFree. These three workshops are focused solely on DNA testing and are for three different levels of understanding: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. With limited attendance and a three and one‐half hour time slot, they are designed to give attendees a more in‐depth look at the subject. 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. FR‐A Autosomal DNA Chromosome Mapping Workshop This workshop will review ways in which autosomal DNA can be mapped so that DNA segments may be attributed to individual ancestors. Participants may begin or continue the process of mapping their DNA. Participants need to bring laptops to the workshop loaded with Excel or other spreadsheet program. Limited to 35 participants. Level: Adv. (Tim Janzen, MD) Instructions from Dr. Janzen. I realize that the attendees at this workshop will have varying amounts of data that they can accurately map. In order to maximize the use of everyone's time for this workshop I would suggest that everyone do the following if at all feasible prior to the workshop: 1.

Test at least one of your parents or one of your children (in addition to yourself) with an autosomal test if at all possible. Testing at 23andMe and/or with Family Tree DNA's Family Finder test are preferable to Ancestry.com's AncestryDNA test for the purposes of this workshop. Upload at least one raw data file from 23andMe, Family Finder, or Ancestry.com's test to GEDmatch for yourself and for a parent or child (assuming that they are available for testing). If you have tested other known relatives, then also upload their data to GEDmatch, particularly if they have only tested at Ancestry.com. Download your aggregate matching segment data from Family Finder from the chromosome browser feature as well as from 23andMe's Family Inheritance: Advanced feature within 3 to 4 days prior to the workshop. Also do this for any parents or children that you have tested. Download your Countries of Ancestry file if you have tested at 23andMe and bring that file with you to the workshop. Also do this for any parents or children that you have tested. Contact all of your closest matches at 23andMe, in Family Finder, and at Ancestry.com and encourage them to upload their raw data files to GEDmatch. Make at least a $10 donation to GEDmatch prior to the workshop so that you are able to be a Tier 1 member there prior to the workshop. Then download your matching segment file from GEDmatch using the Tier 1 utility "Matching Segment Search." I suggest you use a 5 cM/500 SNP threshold for this download. Also do this for any parents or children that you have tested. If you aren't already familiar with the program Excel, become familiar with the basic features of that program prior to the workshop and have it installed on your laptop or tablet. Other spreadsheet programs that can handle CSV files are also reasonable to use if you would prefer to use a different program other than Excel. If you have tested at 23andMe I suggest you contact as many of your matches in DNA Relatives as feasible prior to the workshop and ask them to share genomes with you at the basic level. Bring all of the appropriate downloaded spreadsheets referred to above with you to the workshop. Also bring the passwords to accounts of any of the relatives you have tested. Those of you who don't have very much data to map can work on creating consolidated matching segment data files if you haven't already created them. I will try to give as much individual help as feasible during the workshop. FR‐B I’ve Tested My DNA; Now What? Learn what you can do before contacting your matches to assist you in finding the common ancestor you share with your match. Discover what to do when your matches contact you first, and the steps to follow when contacting your matches. Laptops are not required in this workshop but would be useful. Bring copies of your DNA testing results from 23andMe, Ancestry, and/or Family Tree DNA to the workshop. Limited to 55 participants. Level: Beg. (Emily D. Aulicino, MA) FR‐C Third‐Party Tools for Autosomal DNA A hands‐on workshop that guides attendees step‐by‐step through third‐party tools such as GEDmatch and DNAGedcom. Limited to 45 participants. Laptops are very strongly encouraged in this workshop, as Dr. Bettinger will ask you to periodically complete tasks online. You must have an account at GEDmatch and have a raw data file uploaded to GEDmatch. Level: Int. (Blaine T. Bettinger, PhD, JD) Instructions from Dr. Bettinger. In order to maximize the use of everyone's time for this workshop I request that everyone do the following prior to the workshop: 1.

Test yourself and/or a family member at 23andMe, AncestryDNA, or Family Tree DNA. Create an account at GEDmatch (www.gedmatch.com) and upload at least one raw data file from 23andMe, Family Tree DNA, or AncestryDNA's test to GEDmatch for yourself and any family members (preferably raw data files from AncestryDNA or Family Tree DNA). Create an account at DNAGedcom (www.dnagedcom.com). If you’ve tested at Family Tree DNA, consider downloading your data to DNAGedcom prior to the workshop (https://www.dnagedcom.com/FamilyTreeDNA/Process.aspx). Optional: A month to a few weeks prior to the workshop, make at least a $10 donation to GEDmatch so that you are able to be a Tier 1 member of GEDmatch during the workshop. I will have presentations prepared in case Wi‐Fi access is poor or one or more of the third‐party tools are unavailable or slow during the presentation. Email me at blainebettinger@gmail.com if you have questions!
