HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES REQUIREMENT To promote a rich and varied educational experience outside of the technical requirements for each major, the College of Engineering has established the following Humanities and Social Science breadth requirement which must be completed to graduate: 1. A minimum of six courses from the approved Humanities/Social Sciences (H/SS) lists. 2. Courses must be a minimum of 3 semester units (4 quarter units) to complete an H/SS requirement. 2 unit courses may NOT be used. 3. Two of the six courses must fulfill the Reading and Composition (R&C) requirement. These courses must be taken for a letter grade and th must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year (4 semester of enrollment). The first half of R&C “A” course should be completed by the end of the freshman year; the second half of R&C “B “course by the end of the sophomore year. C‐ or better required. 4. The four additional courses must be chosen from the approved H/SS lists. These courses may be taken P/NP. 5. At least two of the courses must be upper division (courses numbered 100‐196.) 6. At least two of the courses must be from the same department and at least one of the two must be upper division. (*Series) 7. One of the six courses must satisfy the campus American Cultures requirement. Refer to http://amercult.berkeley.edu for information on the requirement and list of courses. (Any 3 unit AC course can be used to satisfy H/SS.) 8. No more than two of the six H/SS course requirements can be satisfied by AP, IB or A‐Levels. Refer to http://coe.berkeley.edu/exams for a list of exams and the requirements they can fulfill. 9. No courses offered by an Engineering department (IEOR, CE, etc.) other than BIOE 100, COMPSCI C79, ENGIN 125, ENGIN 130AC, and ME 191AC may be used to complete H/SS requirements. 10. Courses may fulfill multiple categories. For example History R1 and History 127AC will satisfy the series requirement, the AC requirement and one upper division H/SS course. However, they still only count as two of the six courses required. 11. Courses offered in the summer (indicated by an “N” prefix) or offered online (indicated by a “W” prefix) will be treated in the same way as the regular semester counterpart and will satisfy the same requirement *NOTE for the Series requirement: The purpose of the series requirement is to provide depth of knowledge in a certain area. Therefore, a two‐ course sequence not in the same department may be approved by petition in cases in which there is a clear and logical connection between the courses involved. Also, a course and its prerequisite will satisfy this requirement, even if they are not in the same department, i.e. Ethnic Studies 21AC may be followed by any upper‐division courses in African American Studies, Asian‐American Studies, Chicano Studies, or Native American Studies included in the Comprehensive List. AP, IB or A‐Levels can be used with an upper division course to satisfy the series. Reading and Composition Guidelines Reading and Composition (R&C) Courses must be taken for a letter grade (C‐ or better required and must be completed by no later than the end of the sophomore year (4th semester of enrollment). Students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing requirement must enroll in College Writing R1A to satisfy the “A” portion of the R&C requirement. Only the first half (“A”) of the Reading and Composition requirement can be satisfied with test scores (AP, IB or A‐levels.). Exam scores that can satisfy the “A” portion include: AP English Lang or Lit—score of 4 or 5; IB higher level exam in English A1 or A2—score of 5 or higher; A‐Level English‐grade of A, B or C The following courses satisfy the Reading and Composition “A” list: African American Studies R1A Asian American Studies R2A Celtic Studies R1A (taught in English) Chicano St. R1AN (taught in English) Classics R44 (satisfies either half) College Writing R4A Comparative Literature R1A, N1A or H1A, R2A or 3A English R1A or N1A Film Studies R1A French R1A (taught in English) German R5A (taught in English) Italian R5A (taught in English) Letters & Science R44 (satisfies either half) Native American Studies R1A Near Eastern Studies R1A (taught in English) Near Eastern Studies R2A (taught in English)) Rhetoric R1A or N1A Scandinavian R5A (taught in English) Slavic R5A (taught in English) South and Southeast Asian Studies R5A South Asian R5A (taught in English) Spanish R1A Theater R1A The following courses satisfy the Reading and Composition “B” list. Our requirement is different than that of L & S, so the guidelines posted on the top of each L & S breadth list do NOT apply to COE students. For the four required courses other than Reading and Composition COE students must follow the guidelines listed below: Courses must be a minimum of three units in value. Note: there are two unit courses that appear on some of these lists. Students in the College of Engineering are NOT eligible to use the two unit options; you must select courses that are a minimum of three units. No courses offered by an Engineering department‐‐other than BioE 100, CompSci C79, Engin 125 or 130AC, and ME 191AC‐‐may be used to complete any of the H/SS requirements. Under no circumstance will students be able to use any other Engineering courses that appear on these lists. A maximum of two exams (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or A‐Level) may be used toward completion of the H/SS requirements. Visit http://coe.berkeley.edu/exams for a list of exams and the requirements they can fulfill. Foreign language courses MAY be used to complete H/SS requirements. L & S does not allow students to use many language courses, so their lists will not include all options open to Engineering students. For a list of language options, visit http://coe.berkeley.edu/FL Courses numbered 97, 98, 99, or above 196 may NOT be used to complete H/SS requirements. Within the guidelines above choose courses from any of the lists below: Arts and Literature http://ls‐advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/breadth7/al Foreign Language http://coe.berkeley.edu/FL Historical Studies http://ls‐advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/breadth7/hs International Studies http://ls‐advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/breadth7/is Philosophy and Values http://ls‐advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/breadth7/pv Social & Behavioral Studies http://ls‐advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/breadth7/sbs Use this Search Engine (http://ls‐breadth.berkeley.edu) to find which courses on the lists above (excluding Foreign Language) are offered in any given semester.
