Partnership News This is a publication of the School Business Advisory Council and the Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools Volume 13, 2010-11 Clark Hall - Building Our Students’ Future By Mark White Superintendent T he Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools have entered an exciting era with the building of Clark Hall. The addition of this building will provide relief to a serious issue that has troubled Lincoln High School (LHS) for many years— A NEED FOR MORE SPACE! Many may not realize that LHS is serving more students than the building was built to accom- modate. Administrators continually seek creative ways to schedule classes and to move students through the building, but each time the bell rings to change periods, almost 2,400 students enter the hallways to walk to their next class. Stairwells and key intersections become clogged as lines of students literally come to a halt awaiting their turn to go up or down the crowded stairs, or through busy intersections. See Clark Hall, Page 2 Creekside Murals - A Work of Art By Sharon Iseringhausen Art Teacher, Lincoln Elementary W hile on a trip, I saw the entrance to a city graced with beautiful banners depicting young artists’ work. Upon my return, I approached the City of Gahanna to ask if our students could work on a similar project. Mike Musser of the Department of Parks and Recreation offered an alternative project at Creekside: two 76’ walls under the bridge painted completely white. Would our students be interested in creating artwork to adorn them? White walls? Artists? Of course! Enlisting the help of fellow G-J Schools’ art teachers, we established our goals: make the project safe and exciting; complete it in a timely fashion; utilize only Rendering of Lincoln High Schoolʼs new Clark Hall by Bird Houk Collaborative architects. A study by the Ohio School Facilities Commission confirmed district concerns: the high school could use an additional 80,000 square feet of space to meet the needs of its current enrollment. Go to www.gahannaschools.org for updates on Clark Hall construction progress. donated money; create a new landmark; establish a continuing relationship with the City; and represent the best of the visual arts in Gahanna. Every art teacher ran their school project independently to depict the theme, “Gahanna. Live. Work. Play.” Using nonwoven, primed cloth panels (6’ by 8’), we selected student art concepts and transferred the designs to the panels—then the painting ensued. Each school created a beautiful mural reflecting life in the Gahanna community. The students were excited and honored to participate, and the City was very supportive. Donations from the Gahanna Jefferson Education Foundation, Gahanna Parks and Recreation School and City officials attended a Dedication Celebration at the Creekside Waterfall where Gahanna-Jefferson students were acknowledged as creative artists depicting their own unique view of Gahanna. Pictured is the Lincoln Elementary mural. Foundation, Gahanna Area Kiwanis, Group Benefits Agency, Inc., and several individuals helped us complete the murals and their installation. We invite community members to take an opportunity to view the murals under the Creekside Bridge! 2 SCHOOL BUSINESS ADVISORY COUNCIL 2010-2011 Clark Hall - Building Our Students’ Future Continued from Page 1 The building has been functioning at full capacity for the past five years. During the 2010-2011 school year, over 150 students will attend classes in portable buildings behind LHS and in buildings leased across the street because there are no available rooms in the high school. A recent study by the Ohio School Facilities Commission confirmed district concerns: LHS could use an additional 80,000 square feet of space to meet the needs of its current enrollment. The overcrowding affects students daily, and they realize it! The number-one LHS student complaint has nothing to do with homework, testing, teachers, drugs, gangs, violence or other problems often found in high schools; it is that the halls are too crowded. This crowding leads to higher levels of stress, tension between students, and to students being late for class. Students are not as productive in classes because of what they endure in the halls. There have been discussions for years about how to solve this problem. Students, staff, parents and the community are committed to being a “onehigh-school town,” not splitting the district by adding a second high school. Every school in our district is a blue-andgold school, and the community wants to keep it that way. Additionally, the cost of building a new high school – estimated at $80 million – is not something our district was financially prepared to do. However, there was no room on the current LHS site for another building nor area to expand. Then, the old Kroger site became available for purchase. The site was unique: it was the only empty site adjacent to the campus and the only site on which another building could be built. If the district passed on this opportunity, it may never get another chance to acquire land adjacent to LHS, and the school would continue to be overcrowded for decades to come. Not surprisingly, an international corporation also wanted to purchase the site. As one of the most desirable intersections in Gahanna, developers have watched the site for years waiting for it to become available. This competition drove the price beyond the tax assessor’s value, and the district knew it would have to pay a “premium” to secure the property. The district weighed its options and took decisive action to purchase the land for its students. With a very low amount of debt, the district moved quickly to secure the land before others. In addition, the district’s strong Congratulations to the eighth group of Alumni Hall of Fame recipients recognized for their achievements and exemplary service. Pictured (L-R) are Rosemary Fisher Hensley (1953), an oncology nurse; Vic Wolfe (1971), an independent insurance agent; and Dr. Madeline Osborne Partlow (1975), director of teaching and learning for the New Albany School District. financial rating allowed for low interest rates for borrowing. Money was set aside last winter, and by law can only be used for the construction of Clark Hall. The innovative plans of the three-story building and the rest of the site will provide revenue streams for the district to recoup up to half of its total costs, which ---- including land acquisition ---- are about a fourth of the cost of building a new high school. Ground was broken in May, and the building will open in the fall of 2011, providing learning space for many decades into the future. Programming will be innovative and world-class. Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools recently announced it will have a satellite campus in half of the first floor, and the other half could soon be leased by a higher education institution. The second and third floors will be made up of classrooms for LHS students, and these classrooms will be unique in design and use. The district is proud that so many students want to attend Lincoln High School. These students deserve to have room to move, work and learn. Because of Clark Hall, LHS students will have this, and they will be better prepared to enter the world of work, college and beyond. 2010-2011 GAHANNA-JEFFERSON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Awards of Excellence and Achievement! As well, 13 athletes signed grant and aid scholarships to compete at the Division I level and seven signed at the Division II level. •Blacklick Elementary will debut the Pennies for Peace campaign in 2010-11. The goal is to raise donations, with the support of the school and G-J communities, to help assist the Central Asian Institute in building school houses in Pakistan and Afghanistan. •Chapelfield Elementary hosted COSI On Wheels’ “It’s Simply Chemistry” to help students’ understanding of science. Hands-on stations had students writing secret messages using ultraviolet ink and a black light, identifying unmarked powders by testing their reactions to water, vinegar and iodine, and comparing mass and volume of solids and liquids using scientific tools. •The Goshen Lane Elementary annual Art Action was spectacular this year with 70 student works up for sale. Approximately $600 was raised at the event, and will be used to professionally mat and frame a piece of art from each grade level for the school’s permanent collection. •The 18th annual High Point Elementary Reading Night “Sharing the Magic of Books” was filled to capacity with over 400 students and their parents. Staff members role-played characters from eight age-appropriate books to students grouped by grade level—this is a favorite evening for the High Point community. •Jefferson Elementary began the ECOS (Environmental Commitment to Our School) club to teach energy and cost-saving tips to students and staff. The school observed and applied energy usage, recycled milk cartons, and planted donated flowering crabapple trees and white pines—all part of the ECOS club’s education and impact on students. •“Spring into Math” at Lincoln Elementary engaged all students in using mental math to complete answers to problems without assistance from a calculator or pen and paper. One example had students referring to each other by mathematical names, whereby they computed equations such as “4+6−8 =__” to refer to their fellow student as “2.” •Royal Manor Elementary students were the recipients of the Memorial’s Clubhouse Kids Golf Tour—an interactive golf education program. Professionals from Murfield Village Golf Club (sponsors of The Memorial Tournament) taught fundamentals, etiquette and the innate values of golf through the school’s physical education classes. •Middle School East hosted 52 Indonesian college/university faculty delegates through a program at The Ohio State University. The educators were interested in learning more about American schools’ curriculum, plans for innovative instruction and incorporating technology, how learning is structured for students, and how to recruit and retain quality teachers. •Eighth-graders in Middle School South consumer science classes conducted a “Cookies of the Month” project as a result of studying world hunger. The concern prompted 160 students to take part in “making a difference” in their own community by baking 3,750 cookies to sell to teachers in the building. All proceeds from the yearlong project were donated to Gahanna Residents In Need. •The Lion’s P.A.W. (Positive Actions @ West) Breakfast program at Middle School West was based on the GJPS Graduate Profile. The program outlines five qualities from the profile. Teachers nominated students monthly who exhibited these qualities to be recognized at a special breakfast. The five qualities are: a responsible community leader; a collaborative team leader; a comprehensive problem solver; an effective communicator; and a proficient technology user. Directing Instrumental Excellence By Kelly Shellhammer Instrumental Music Teacher and Jazz Band Director T he Lincoln High School (LHS) bands have been under the direction of Jeff Shellhammer for the past 25 years. Jeff led the three LHS concert bands to an unprecedented 57 superior ratings at State-level Ohio Music Education Association Adjudicated Events, and performances at numerous OMEA professional conferences and in the 1992 MidWest International Band Clinic in Chicago—an accomplishment comparable to being selected to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade. The Golden Lions Marching Band, under Jeff's leadership, brought outstanding bands to our high school stadium from Ohio State, Ohio University, Indiana, Purdue, Penn State, Cincinnati, Miami and Bowling Green to share performances for the Gahanna community. lished the Shellhammer Commission Fund. Additions included a Web Climber, large boulders for climbing, a new swing set, as well as several trees. Students are having great fun thanks to the Blacklick PTO Pride Partner organization and donated monies from C.V. Perry Builders, developer of the Stepping Stone community. Alliance Data partnered with Chapelfield Elementary to help with the “Lunch Bunch” math enrichment program and classroom tutoring. The school’s Lion’s Club House was supported by Gahanna Bridges, who assisted students with after-school homework and team-building activities. The local Tim Hortons, working with its corporate foundation, sponsored seven Goshen Lane Elementary students to attend the Tim Horton Children’s Camp in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, Canada. Students had the opportunity to learn important life skills and independence on this exciting camp adventure. High Point Elementary collaborated with local businesses to adopt over 25 families providing holiday gifts, meals, toiletries and more. This wonderful annual initiative is in cooperation with Gahanna Residents In Need. The Gahanna Parks and Recreation Safe Routes to Schools project was coordinated with Jefferson Elementary’s Safe Routes program to encourage students and families to walk or bike to school to promote safety, health, wellness, exercise and pollution prevention. Many took part in this state and national initiative to support “active” transportation. The “Hearts for Heroes” campaign conducted at Lincoln Elementary collected and sent 47 boxes of supplies to Captain Jeff Carson and his military unit serving in Afghanistan. Students and families donated a wide variety of supplies including candy, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, coffee, gum, powdered Gatorade and more! Good Samaritan Church expanded their partnership with Royal Manor Elementary. Volunteers provided school supplies and holiday support. Church members served as Wednesday night academic tutors and as daily afterschool Homework Club support. Thirteen local businesses stepped up and volunteered to man a booth at Middle School East’s Health Fair. Business participants included: Sara McIntosh, M.D., Center for Injury Research, Gahanna Police Department, Huntington National Bank, James T. Hutta, D.D.S., Gahanna Jazzercise, Massage Envy, Next Level Fitness, Otterbein College, Poison Control Center, Pregnancy Decision Help Center, YMCA and Yoga 4 Me.
