CODE DEDU1503/1 TUTOR Christopher Tamm WORKSHOP NAME EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATION DATE & TIME Friday 14th August, 2015 — 9:30am to 3:30pm (lunch provided). DESCRIPTION Where does inspiration come from?, How do we observe and connect with what is before us? Tutor Denis Clarke has created this workshop for participants who are looking to be invigorated by new ideas and approaches to drawing and mixed media. Referencing historical examples you will work from a variety of objects to open up your senses of sight and touch in order to interpret the ‘feel’ of reality. Using dry media you will be exploring a variety of marks, observational techniques and strategies to deal with space, movement, shape, volume, and tone. Explore a sense of structural composition from plant life along with freer interpretive methods using layering of mixed media ink/watercolour washes, fluid line and wax resist (oil pastel, etc.). Rigorous observation provides the impetus to convert the reality of nature to abstract equivalents on the flat picture plane so as to create expressive compositions and some ideas and inspiration to take back to your class . Its spontaneity and possible combination of printmaking, drawing and painting media constitutes Mono printing’s advantages and versatility. Unlike other printing methods mono printing produces expressive and unique one off prints; no two images can be reproduced exactly. In this workshop, printmaker Pauline Zuffery will explore strategies for teaching simple printmaking processes. Using a still-life setting as reference, Pauline will walk you through registration & multiplate printing, additive & subtractive methods, direct painting, collage techniques and how to develop layers plus complex colour relationships in your prints. With an eye for the unusual and the beautiful, Kerrie will show you how to work with unorthodox materials to express different perspectives and to create new interpretations and forms. Participants are encouraged to bring a collection of items to work with and an open mind. This course will also explore resources, materials and techniques that build the capacity of teachers to deliver effective teaching strategies. Using the life and art of Francis Bacon as inspiration, Peter encourages the self-expression of participants. Photographs will be crumpled, ripped, slashed, repaired and then worked over with paint.
