answered with shelter, food
and hands-on emergency aid.
397 families with 490 children
stayed in HomeFront’s emergency
shelters.
197 children made memories to
grow on in our summer camps.
1,341 children started school the
right way with new clothes, shoes
and school supplies.
3,744 visits were made to our
FreeStore for much needed
clothing and household items.
724 families were spared the
trauma of being evicted from
their homes.
322 people rebuilt their lives in
our safe, supportive, permanent
affordable housing.
240 long-time welfare recipients
received job skills training to help
them secure full-time work.
2,284 children had their wishes 9,798 food bags were distributed
come true on Christmas morning. from our food pantries.
Dear Friend of HomeFront,
Growing up, one of my favorite poets was Langston Hughes, who spoke eloquently about
the inner suffering of those born by chance into lives without the stability and support that
most of us take for granted. As we put this year’s Annual Report together, I am reminded
of a phrase from a Hughes’ poem called A Dream Deferred. “What happens to a dream
deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” In these tough economic times, the
dream of working toward a better future does seem in danger of drying up for too many of the people
who come to our door every day.
Keeping the dream alive is challenging. It always begins with providing the basics—shelter, food and safety.
In addition to the basics, HomeFront has always helped families in crisis through individualized support
that includes crisis management, childcare and education and the expertise to connect each family to
the government “safety nets” available to those in genuine need.
The economic meltdown of 2008 has trickled down to every segment of our society. Now those safety
nets have been overwhelmed, not just by those who struggle, but also by those who are working and are
still losing their foothold on financial security.

HomeFront’s core mission has not been spared. This past year we have grappled with the frustrating
realities of little or no government funding for creating affordable and transitional housing. State aid for
our kinship and job training programs has been reduced.
Local families struggling to get by have also felt the noose closing. Many breadwinners have been laid
off from low-paying jobs and are struggling to pay their rent on unemployment while they look for
work. Significant reductions in the food stamp program have been proposed for 2014 while the price of
food rises every day. For these families, who are not looking for a handout, but merely longing for a
chance to make a good life for their kids, HomeFront is no longer the last resort. We are the only resort.
HomeFront’s mission is
to end homelessness in Central New Jersey
by harnessing the caring, resources
and expertise of the community.
At HomeFront, we realize that, although the components of the solution for so many families are shifting,
HomeFront has the expertise, experience and, most importantly, support from a caring community to keep
us fighting the good fight with renewed vigor and determination.
We lessen the immediate pain of homelessness
and help families become self-sufficient.
This Annual Report is dedicated to dreams for the future—the dreams of those, young and old, who come
to us for help, and, our donors, who dream of better lives for their neighbors and stand with us to make
those dreams come true. My gratitude knows no bounds.
We help homeless families advocate
for themselves individually and collectively.
As government support slips away and the philosophy becomes “Let those who care help those who
need,” HomeFront must depend on our donors more and more, not only for response to a growing need,
but to ensure the continued strength of our critical programs. Our donors, all of you who care, have
become the beating heart of HomeFront.
Connie Mercer
Founder & Executive Director
We work to give our clients the skills
and opportunities to ensure adequate incomes,
and we work to increase the availability
of adequate, affordable housing.

When I was eight I heard my parents
talking about my cousin who had given
his birthday money to the library. I wanted
to do the same thing when I heard about
HomeFront and the many kids my age
whose lives are not as nice as mine. It’s
not fair that I have a place to call home
and they don’t. Since then I’ve raised
$1,500 from my birthdays for HomeFront.
I also sell jewelry that I make now with
beads that I buy online and give the money
to HomeFront. I have raised $750 so far!

As an upper school head at a private school,
I work with kids who have stable homes
and every advantage. I love kids and became
involved with HomeFront because those kids
have nothing. I believe we should address
poverty in two ways—by charity and by a
quest for equity. And I believe Homefront
beautifully addresses both those things.

A Caring Commun
These photos represent just a few of the many fun and inspiring events H
nity in Action
HomeFront and its community of supporters and volunteers host throughout each year.
AmeriCorps* Vista
From our very beginning we have
received generous support from the
programs of the Corporation for National and
Community Service.
AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps* VISTA
members have been fundamental in
establishing and maintaining life-changing
programs for our families.
When I walk into my house, I
feel truly at home—comfortable,
safe and secure. It is that feeling
of “home” I want for everyone—
especially for children. That
is why I work on behalf of
HomeFront.

Peter and his mom became
homeless when the store where
she worked as a salesclerk went
out of business. During their stay
at the Family Preservation
Center, the Children’s Champion
team discovered Peter’s dyslexia
and arranged for special
tutoring. Now Peter doesn’t
hate school, and, after a recent
outing to the Adventure Aquarium in Camden with the Joy,

Twenty years ago I started telling my
kids that the only thing I wanted for
Mother’s Day was for them to do something to help someone in need. My son
brought home a HomeFront Mothers’
Day card that he got at Notre Dame High
School and I have been a proud supporter
ever since. Four years ago I started working with Ruthann Traylor in the HomeFront ArtSpace therapeutic art program
and it has meant the world to me. By
helping those in need you not only
empower them, but yourself as well.

Until last month, Danielle and
her mom lived with her grandparents in their tiny apartment.
Every night as she lay in bed,
she could hear them all fighting
and screaming. Finally, her
grandfather made them leave.
They came to the Family
Preservation Center ten days
ago. HomeFront’s work with this
family is just beginning.
Kaylie and her sister Tonya have lived in one of HomeFront’s permanent,
supportive affordable apartments for the last three years. They both love
school and, thanks to the Back to School drive, look cool like their friends
every September.

When I was in the 7th grade I began
tutoring kids at the FPC after school for
Melva Moore. I also started to donate my
clothes to HomeFront and was so excited
to see some of my tutoring students
wearing my clothes the next week! It
made me realize that even the small
things could make a big difference in the
lives of HomeFront clients. I raised the
money to sponsor a room at the FPC and
seven years later I’m still sponsoring it!

Against sad odds for inner city
boys, Luis and Max are good
kids. Most of their out-ofschool lives depend on HomeFront’s children’s programs –
tutoring, Joy, Hopes and
Dreams, summer camp and
even the basketball team!
Yvonne is the first to say that
without HomeFront’s array
of support services and the
Lawrence Community Center,
life would be incredibly hard for
her and her son, Noah. Yvonne
was laid off from her job last
year and is working hard with
the Hire Expectations staff to
become re-employed. Yvonne
dreams of watching Noah play
basketball on the HomeFront
team one day.

HomeFront is deeply important to me and
my children because the people that need our
help are so close to us but they might as well
live a world away. They are our neighbors
and we need to do what we can for them. I
am thrilled that the Women’ Initiative is increasing that awareness among so many
women who care and can help.

We are also extremely grateful to the 1,381 donors who
gave under $100 for a total of $56,104.43. These people

HomeFront received over $3,000,000 worth of goods and services throughout the year from
corporations, churches, civic groups and private citizens. These goods – furniture, appliances,
household goods, automobiles, computers, clothing, food and toys and critical pro bono
services, enrich the lives of countless families. We, and they, thank you.

Two years ago, Theresa was behind on rent, facing eviction and looking for discarded food to feed
her son. She came to HomeFront for emergency rental assistance but HomeFront insisted that
she needed a plan. She became certified in Microsoft Office through HomeFront’s computer
classes and the Hire Expectations team worked with her on how to present herself on the
telephone and furnished her with professional attire from the FreeStore. With their help she got
a job as a receptionist at a car dealership where she has already earned a raise.

HomeFront, Inc. Audited Statements of Financial Position
In this climate of greater need and fewer resources, we must and do,
strive to manage every dollar to the best and highest use. We strive to
keep our financial house in tight order and once again experienced a
completely clean audit. We continue to keep our commitment to spend
more than 90% of every dollar on the families we serve. We are
pleased to have received again a 4-star Charity Navigator Award for our
ability to efficiently manage and grow our finances. The safety net we
provide must be kept strong so we can support those who need us most.
We are honored and humbled to have so many individuals, foundation, corporations and
government agencies show their faith and trust in us by continuing and increasing their support of the programs we provide. In 2012 we spent more than $9,000,000 in resources for
the families we serve.
