HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL
PTSA NEWSLETTER
Summer 2014
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to Houston High School!
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer and beginning to prepare for an exciting new school year.
We look forward to seeing everyone at registration on Tuesday, July 29.
Please do your best to adhere to the following schedule:
12th 2:00
11th 3:00
10th 4:00
9th 6:00
As we move into our first year as the high school of the Germantown Municipal School District, we
look forward to a more responsive, less bureaucratic and locally-controlled school district. Through a
lot of hard work from many of our dedicated professionals, we are working diligently to provide the
smoothest transition possible. However, with change and transition, there are always challenges, and
we greatly appreciate your patience as we develop solutions to these challenges.
To help new students and their parents with the transition to Houston High School, we will host two
student/parent evening meetings, July 22 and July 30, at 6 PM in the HHS Auditorium. Information
about HHS will be shared, followed by a panel question and answer session and then a tour of HHS
will be provided.
New students will have two opportunities to meet other students, tour HHS, and briefly meet teachers
as they walk their schedules on July 30 and August 1 at 9 AM in the HHS Auditorium. These activities
will conclude at 11 AM.
We look forward to a great school year. Please continue to check the GMSD website for any updates.

PTSA OPEN HOUSE/
CURRICULUM NIGHT
AUGUST 14 AT 6:00 P.M.
FROM THE PTSA PRESIDENT
Welcome!
On behalf of the HHS PTSA Board of Managers,
I’d like to welcome you to Houston High School.
Whether you’re returning or are here for the first
time, we’re glad you’re here. Houston has a
tradition of excellence involving our parents,
teachers and students. The PTSA invites you to
be a part of that tradition. I am extremely excited
for our inaugural year as part of the Germantown
Municipal School District. I believe there are great
things in store for our students, parents, teachers,
and community.
Join PTSA!
The PTSA does not conduct fundraising at
Houston High. We rely solely on your membership
dues and donation to supplement each and every
PTSA activity and program, from a senior
scholarship, teacher grant, teachers' luncheons
and snacks, just to name a few. Another great
reason to join Houston High's PTSA is the
newsletter. With your membership, you will
receive our regularly published newsletter via
email. Stay informed, join the PTSA!
Get Involved!
Parental involvement and support are important
factors in the success of Houston High School.
The membership form includes a list of PTSA
volunteer opportunities. Please take a look at
these and indicate any activities you’re interested
in supporting with your time and resources.
Return it with your membership and you’ll be
added to the list of helpful and generous parents
who help make Houston such a great place to
learn, grow and excel.
Contact Us!
We appreciate your support and welcome your
comments and/or suggestions. I encourage you to
contact us any time
at hhsptsa123@yahoo.com with any questions or
concerns.
I am looking forward to watching Houston High
and the city of Germantown come together in
support of our students, teachers, and
administration as we take this momentous step to
do what is best for our children and community. I
can't wait to see what the future holds for us!
The Houston High PTSA will sponsor an
Open House at the school on Thursday,
August 14th.
There will be a brief meeting and
introduction of the PTSA Board. You will
be able to attend a “mini day in the life
of your student” as you follow their full
schedule. This will provide you with an
opportunity to meet the teachers
working with your child.
Please bring a copy of your student’s
schedule that evening, and WEAR
COMFORTABLE SHOES! Seriously, you
will be doing a lot of walking in a
compressed amount of time.
We look forward to seeing you.

Welcome from Guidance
First, we want to welcome everyone to the Germantown Municipal School
District, and welcome our new students to Houston High School. Second, if
you are a returning student, Welcome Back.
We would also like to welcome two new counselors to the Houston High
School family. Mr. Christopher Cook will be with us as the twelfth grade
counselor this year. Mr. Cook is a graduate of Houston High School, and is
excited to be returning to his alma mater as a faculty member! Sara Schmitt
will also be joining us as the ninth grade counselor. Sara has specialized in
working with freshmen and is excited to be at HHS!
We would like to offer some words of advice as you start your school year:
Be present – don’t waste this year waiting for next year. Make the most of
what each day brings you.
Challenge yourselves – set goals and become disciplined. Virtues are born
out of habits and habits come from being more disciplined.
Get out there and be involved – if you want to try new things, now is the
time. Try out for a sport, join a club or audition for a production. Any and all
of these activities will not only expand your social circle, but will also develop
your character.
Stay on top of your academics – use your agenda book, talk to your
teachers, review/study each night, and monitor your own grades.
Be proactive – help yourself from the start by following all of these tips.
Be sure to visit Houston’s website and listen to the announcements for all the
happenings. Have a great year!

COLLEGE & CAREER NEWS
I hope everyone had a restful but productive summer. I am sure that you are all ready to jump into
senior year and the college admission process! As the Houston High School college and career
counselor I look forward to working with you this year. I hope to meet many of you in the coming
weeks and months.
We will have a Senior/Parent College Night Presentation on Tuesday, August 26th at 6:00 PM
in the auditorium, where I will give you the Houston Guide to College Planning Notebook, if you
don’t already have one. I hope that it will be a helpful tool for you in the coming weeks. We will also
have a financial aid workshop for seniors and parents later in the year to help you complete the
FAFSA and answer any additional questions. There will be a large College Fair at the AgriCenter
on Monday, September 29th, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, which is a wonderful way for students to
familiarize themselves with many colleges and universities. In addition, many schools have
contacted me about scheduling visits to Houston to meet our seniors. A list with the schools and the
dates and times for their visits will be posted on my door. I will also have an updated list on our
website. Students should sign up in the College & Career Office at least one day in advance of
the visit and pick up a permission slip for their teacher to excuse them from the class that
they will miss on the day of the visit. Teachers have the last word in whether to excuse the
student or not. The large Tennessee state schools will have a table set up in the main lobby for
some of their visits so that all students interested can stop by for information during their lunch time
and will not have to miss class.
Seniors have two days that will count as excused absences for visiting colleges. However, in order
for the absences to be excused, the student MUST come to the College Office at least three days
in advance of the visit and fill out the proper forms for the Attendance Office and the teachers.
During the second semester, juniors will have one day excused absence for a pre-approved college
visit. The same procedures (fill out forms in the College Office) will apply to juniors to have the
absence count as excused.
If seniors have not taken the ACT or the SAT yet, it is time! You can register for both tests online at
www.actstudent.org and www.collegeboard.com respectively. The dates for the tests are posted
online and in the Guidance Office and the College & Career Office.
If you need to send a transcript to a school, please see Mrs. Lana in the Guidance Office to fill out a
request. It costs $5.00 per transcript, and you must sign a release form. Athletes should also
remember to sign up with the NCAA Eligibility Center and print the transcript request forms
from the website to bring to Mrs. Lana for processing. You must do this if you wish to be eligible to
play sports in college next year.
Please come by my office, call (756-2370, x232), or email (andrea.little@gmsdk12.org) me if you
have any questions about the college application process. Please note that I do have a new email
address. I look forward to an exciting year with you.

KNOWLEDGE BOWL
Houston's Knowledge Bowl practice sessions will begin the second week of school in August.
We will be meeting in classroom M 123. Practices are on Monday and Wednesday afternoons
from 2:10 until 3:30. We will participate in many area competitions where all students can be
involved. We encourage all students who are interested to join us.
This is an outstanding group of young people who are interested in academics and have a love
of trivia. Quick recall is a 'learned skill.' We welcome freshmen, students new to Houston High,
or anyone who thinks that this might be the group for them! We guarantee you will have fun!
Last year, we placed second in the WREG Channel 3 competition, second at the academic
competition at MUS in October, and first place at both Bolton and Germantown twice each.
Houston High is loaded with talent. Come show your stuff with the Knowledge Bowl!!

a German folk dance troupe! We will take the National German Exam again in January and plan
to earn more medals. We are looking forward to the events at the University of Memphis Foreign
Language Fair in the Spring of 2015. It will be hard to beat the 37 trophies that the Houston
German students won last year!
Come check out what's going on in our corner of Houston High, my room is A105. We offer four

ABSENCES
Parents are expected to call the school before
10:00 a.m. to notify the school of a student’s
absence.
When absent from school, students must
bring a note from their parent/guardian
listing the date of the absence, the reason for
the absence, and a parent telephone number.
Students have two days to bring a note, after
which the absence will be unexcused. Please
write the student’s full name on the note.
All notes are brought to first period teachers.
DRESS CODE
Pants must be of the appropriate size and
worn at the waist. Belts must be worn. Shirts
must be tucked into clothing.
Although most of our students try to adhere
to the dress code, our biggest problems seem
to be the oversized clothing and the low slung
pants.
For this school year, students will not be
allowed to wear over-sized clothing (pants or
tops) or jerseys of any type or length.
CHECK IN
Students checking in after 7:15 a.m.
must come to the Attendance Office.
Parents must accompany 9th and 10th
grade students to check in.
We will accept check-in notes for 11th
and 12th grade students.
If a student has an excessive number of
check-ins, the Attendance Office will
require a doctor’s note.
CHECK OUT
We strongly encourage parents to
schedule appointments after school
hours.
However, if students need to check out
during the day, parents may come to the
Attendance Office.
9th and 10th graders need a parent to
come in and check them out.
Only 11th and 12th grade students, who
drive to school, may check out with a
note and a call. Bring a note to the
attendance office before 7:00 a.m.; the
parent calls prior to check out time to
verify the note, and the student will
be dismissed at the proper time.
**Please, no check outs after 1:45 p.m.
We believe that attendance is an integral
part in the learning process, and we will
do our best to ensure that you are aware
of any attendance issues which influence
your child.
