Demerit Points
Demerit points may apply if you break road rules. You
can get demerit points as well as a fine or lose your
licence. If your licence expired or you were unlicensed
at the time of demerit point suspension, you will have
to reapply for your licence. Otherwise you will have to
wait until the demerit point suspension periods expire
and you can drive again. Check with MVR if you are
unsure about your demerit points.

Alcohol ignition Locks (AIL)
An alcohol ignition lock (AIL) is a breath
testing device connected to the ignition of a
car or truck. The car or truck will not
start if the driver has been drinking.
If you have been convicted and
lost your licence because of
drink driving already, the court
may order an AIL period. The
licence condition ‘I’ will be on
your licence for that time.

Drink and drug driving are serious road
safety issues that affect all Territorians.
This table tells you what courses you have to do depending on which
offence you committed.
Most drink driving offenders must complete a drink
driver education course before you can reapply for a
licence. This can take several months.
Blood Alcohol
Content (BAC) Ist Offence
You must pay to attend the drink driver education
course.
Most importantly if your licence has been cancelled,
you cannot drive in the Northern Territory, interstate
or overseas.

Re-licensing
When you get your licence back you will
get the same type of licence you had
before.
If you have not had a licence in the last
5 years, you will have to pass a road rules
test for your L plates and a driving test to
get your licence back or for your P plates.
You may get a ‘Z’ condition which means
you must always have zero % blood
alcohol concentration (BAC) when
driving, that is no alcohol. This applies to
drivers under 25 years old who have not
been licensed for more than 3 continuous
years.
