To Play: Have children arrange the recyclables in alphabetical order. Communicating through listening, speaking, viewing Std.4 Phonics & spelling Math Std3 Collect data, draw conclusions Second Grade Content Std 2: Sense of self in relation to family & community Recycle Sorting Object of the Game: Put the recyclables in the recycle bin; put the trash in the trash bin Number of Players: 2-4 Game Pieces: 26 Recyclables and 20 Trash Cards; Recycle Bin, Trash Can To Play: Place the larger recycle bin and trash can pictures on the table or the floor. Shuffle the recyclable and trash cards and place them in a deck in front of you. Each player draws a card in turn and places it on the correct bin or can. For younger kids – there’s no winning or losing, just learning! Extra Credit! Use the Extra Credit list on the next page to discuss the pictures with Extension: Use the cards to create math problems with the numbers of recyclables and trash “collected.” Graph results. Extra Credit (in Alphabetical Order) Cell phone – Tell your parents to take their old cell phones to Recycle Utah where it will be disposed of properly. All cell phones contain toxins (poisons). Envelope (manila) –At home keep your white paper separate from your manila envelopes, newspaper and colored mail. Keep everything clean and uncontaminated with food or liquids. Flash card -- Only recyclable with newspaper. At home keep your white paper separate from your newspaper and colored mail unless you have curbside pickup. Quill pen – It’s hard to find recyclable items that begin with Q. Take your quill pens to a thrift store for reuse! Rechargeable batteries – Batteries contain acids and other chemicals that are harmful to our water. Take your batteries to Recycle Utah. TetraPak Juice – Even though the outside is cardboard, the inside is foil. Any Tetra Pak boxes cannot be recycled because the layers don’t separate well enough to make a new product. Used car – Tell your parents to donate your family’s “old clunker” to Recycle Utah! The parts are recycled separately. Good parts are resold. HazMat fluids are disposed of properly, and windshield washer, brake fluid and antifreeze is re-sold. Scrap metal is taken to metal dealer. Vegetable spray – Empty aerosol cans are recycled in the metal bin. Zipper – Zippers are made of metal and cloth or plastic and cloth. They can be reused if you cut them out of garments.
