We continued to provide our students with various learning opportunities in the academic domain and in other learning experiences, both inside school and outside, to enhance their capabilities as well as to nurture in them positive values in life. To celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the school, a series of activities had taken place. These made the school year a more remarkable and memorable one. Major Concerns for 2014/15 Based on the strengths and experiences gathered in the last two years in the cycle, the major concerns were defined into 4 areas. They are (1) Curriculum betterment, (2) Raising the effectiveness of learning and teaching, (3) Enhancing the English proficiency of the learning community and (4) Cultivation of positive values in life. The subject departments and functional groups implemented their initiatives and measures with collaborative efforts. The following are the details of our various areas of work and achievements in the 2014-2015 school year. Curriculum Betterment 1. Curriculum Organization Subject departments further adjusted or fine-tuned the curriculum and syllabus to set relevant and appropriate expectation and standard at each secondary level. Scheme of work and syllabus were reviewed and the progress was checked constantly. Re-arrangement of learning and teaching sequence was made in subjects like Biology and English language. Step-by-step approach and scaffolding were the strategies widely used in various subjects such as History, Geography as well as Technology and Living. The breadth and depth of the curriculum in each junior level were revised in subjects to better bridge the gap between junior and senior form curriculum. Besides chapters/ modules/units arrangement and tailoring of teaching contents for improving teaching effectiveness, bridging worksheets, self-designed unit plans and supplementary exercises were designed in various subject departments for S3 students to make preparation to senior form curriculum. School-based or even classTak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 1 based materials, which can better suit the students’ levels and interests, were adopted for both senior and junior form students in the English and Chinese Language Departments. Moreover, special syllabus and teaching arrangements were provided for the 4 Non-Chinese Speaking students in Chinese Language, Chinese History and Putonghua. 2. Alignment of Assignment and Assessment with Curriculum As assignments were considered as an essential part in enhancing students’ learning effectiveness, much focus and effort have been given not only to their quality as well as their alignment with the curriculum and assessments. Some subject departments such as Business, Accounting and Financial Department, Geography, Mathematics, Technology and Living, etc. revised and modified assignments to achieve a closer alignment with the assessments. Department-based and school-based assignment inspections with professional dialogues were carried out regularly to help ensure that the objective, quantity as well as frequency, and their design as well as alignment to the curriculum content were achieved. Student assignment inspections were done once by subject department heads and then by an inspection team composed of the principal and the vice-principals. Subject department heads had given guidance and advice upon student assignments for the new teachers at a more regular interval throughout the year. To cater for learner diversity and to help stretch potential of more capable students, the concept of including an extended part has been applied in assignments in various subjects such as Mathematics and History. Well-designed mark sheets, comprehensive rubrics and sharing of good works have also been adopted to help students understand the marking criteria and the expectations of their assignments and assessments from the teachers. Not only resources from the textbooks, but also real life application and online materials are used in teachers’ daily teaching and student assignments to enrich the scope of students’ learning. Raising the Effectiveness of learning and teaching (a) Learning & Teaching Development The learning and teaching development has been the key major concern in this 3year development cycle in our school. The establishment of the Learning and Teaching Development Team in the organizational chart of the school this year further demonstrated our persistent emphasis on the importance of learning and teaching. Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 2 This year, the L & T Team members and Academic Team members opened their classrooms to the department heads and all the department heads opened their classrooms to their fellow department members. The “Critical Friend” programme was continued as a part of professional development programme. Teachers observed at least one teacher’s lesson or was observed by at least one critical friend at his or her own invitation. Peer observation feedback sheets were completed after the class observation for appreciation and improvement sake. Two teachers’ training workshops were held by L & T Development Team and Staff Development and Mentorship Team on how to facilitate students’ engagement and to tackle learners’ diversity as well as to consolidate students’ classroom learning. Above 90% of the participants agreed that the workshops were helpful. A training workshop for all Department Heads was also held in March 2015 on the concept and role of department head as a facilitator, which was helpful in creating a supportive, collaborative and professional subject department. In order to strengthen the learning and study skills of the students and to build up their learning habits, two workshops were conducted for S1 and S2 students in the Activity Afternoons. The first one was on note-taking skills and the other one was on memory skills. All S1 and S2 class teachers were involved in delivering the workshops. Positive feedbacks were received from both the students and teachers. The L & T Development Team successfully organized two assemblies to stress and instill the importance of learning as well as the meaning in learning to the students. Besides, an academic quiz competition has been held jointly with the Student Council and the Four Houses as a whole-school activity. The message of the promotion of learning passion and striving for excellence academically was conveyed to the students. To emphasize the nurturing to the new teaching staff of the school, the Staff Development Team was renamed as the Staff Development and Mentorship Team. The team arranged different formal and informal mentor-mentee meetings throughout the year for new teachers to discuss effective teaching strategies and students’ learning practices with their mentors and to further promote the culture of professional sharing. (b) Quality Assurance in Learning & Teaching Class observation at department level as well as at school level was continued to ensure quality teaching and to enhance professional exchange through the pre-andpost observation professional dialogue. All experienced teachers have been observed once either this year or in the last academic year. New teachers who have worked for less than 3 years in the school were observed at least once in each term by either the subject department heads or the vice-principal together with the principal. Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 3 (c) Enhancement & Enrichment Programmes To sustain the development in building up a good foundation in student learning in the junior levels, the nine enhancement and enrichment lessons of English (4 groups), Mathematics (3 groups) and Chinese (2 groups) for a double-lesson each cycle, continued in S1 and S2. Students were allocated to different groups according to their learning ability in the core subjects. Tailor-made teaching materials and more student-centered learning activities were adopted to cater for learning diversity and to enhance confidence building. Moreover, the S1 Read-and-Spell programme, the S2 Lunch Revision Class and the After School Revision Class for students with missing homework records were continued to help students build better foundation and study habits. Senior Form students who have withdrawn elective subjects were offered additional lessons of English, Chinese, Liberal Studies and Mathematics in their free lessons to help them perform better in their core subjects. Besides, S6 high achievers’ classes and remedial classes for enrichment and enhancement have been conducted to better equip students in core subjects and various elective subjects with examination content and skills. The EE classes not only helped them further consolidate their learning but also stretch their potentials to perform promisingly in the DSE Exam. (Appendix 1) (d) Other Learning Experiences ‘Reach Out to the World’ was one of the development themes in the cycle. To echo the theme, all subject departments and functional teams have created ample opportunities of other learning experiences (OLE) both inside and outside the school context for students to widen their exposure and to stimulate them to strive for excellence. The Library Team organized various reading progammes to boost the reading interest as students were encouraged to explore and to widen their scope beyond their own world through reading. There were structured Reading Lessons for S1 to S3 students, which aimed at building up a sustained reading habit of the students. An afternoon assembly for whole school is held on 23 April 2015 for promoting reading and World Book Day. Some subject departments such as Geography and History continued with the reading programmes to award students who read extensively to enrich their exposure beyond the syllabus and textbooks. Subject departments and functional teams had provided various learning opportunities outside the school context for students. Students took part actively in external competitions, outings, field trips/ studies as well as excursions organized by the school or other outside school organizations in both academic and non-academic aspects. (Appendix 2) Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 4 The Outing and Services Team had organized various programmes and activities such as school picnics and community service projects for S2 and S4 as well as overseas study tours for students at different levels collaboratively with various subject departments and functional teams. The highlight of the “Reach Out to the World” activities in 2014-2015 were the study tours to Guangzhou (慕德慈愛在廣東 ) and the “Truth and Love” Canada Tour 「愛‧回加」之旅 2015 which were specially organized to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the school. Study tours held in the year were summed up as follows: Subject / Team Target Liberal Studies Department Outing and Services Team Outing and Services Team S5-6 ECA Team and P.E. The Inter-school Theme Presentation, Jointschool English Debate and Chinese Debate had given challenges and valuable learning experiences to both the participating students and the audience. During the two days, the school was open to public for Performing Arts Showcase, Sports Talent Showcase, and Team Creativity Displays. Students and participants were highly engaged in the various activities, performances, games and handicrafts stalls, etc. The number of students involved as performers and helpers on Open Days was summarized below: Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 5 Role Opening Performance Performers and Helpers Form All S1 S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 Total Number of participants 134 16 59 75 96 99 1 480 All in all, abundant chances had been given to the students to demonstrate their potentials, to explore possibilities and to widen their exposure to the outside world. Enhancing the English proficiency of the community (a) Nurturing an English-Rich Environment The whole school community had very good collaboration on the provision of an English rich environment in the school campus, with authentic opportunities created for the students to put the language in use in their daily school life. School events, including annual Sports Day, Singing Contest, inauguration, prize presentation, prayer services, morning prayers as well as assemblies were all conducted in English. Announcements and notices, both written and spoken ones, were disseminated in English as well. English Corner activities were held by the English Ambassadors regularly to boost the English filled learning environment. All S1 and S2 students had visited the English Corner with the company of their English teachers. Two English Activity Days were organized to reiterate the importance of using English in school campus and to showcase students’ oral and multi-media output through choral speaking performance, drama performances and inter-school debates. Students showed interest in performing arts such as participating in musical production, which as well boost their use in the language. About 40 English Ambassadors were selected for helping organize month or season themed activities, such as Halloween Treasure Hunts and Easter Eggs Workshop in English and games at the English Corner and on other duties related to English, for instance, being MCs and announcers for the various school ceremonies, student reporters for the school publications. Ample opportunity was created for exploration and maximizing exposure to the outside world through the use of English. Besides the local outing to an English Jazz school, many students took part in external competitions e.g. Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition, Nesta-SCMP Debating Competition and HK Schools Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 6 Speech Festival. This year, students from the Chinese International School had conducted a series of debate workshops for more than 40 interested students. The workshop with 8 sessions equipped our students with some useful debating skills including the ways to construct cases and arguments and speak with a good stylistic approach. (b) Language Across the Curriculum Programme (LAC) Language Across the Curriculum Programme (LAC) was well coordinated by the Language Across Curriculum Team. It aimed at bridging the learning gap of the students, especially at the junior level, in subjects using English as the medium of instruction. The English Department collaborated closely with the Mathematics, Technology & Living, Liberal Studies and Integrated Science departments to equip students with essential language skills and text types in learning. Owing to the prior experience and revision, as well as communication among teachers, some LAC modules were trimmed and revised so that they could better suit students’ levels and interests. This year, over 50% of the LAC content was delivered in the content subject lessons. Subject teachers have shown readiness to incorporate language teaching in their lessons, as well as a good level of understanding of the focus and means of collaboration. The subject-based emphasis on language objectives was embedded in assignment and assessment design to signify our whole school approach to raise the English competence of students and bridge them with language support to meet the requirements in public examination. Various subjects such as Liberal Studies, Geography, History and Biology had provided language support in the learning and teaching materials e.g. vocabulary list, useful sentence patterns and suggested paragraph structure. Teachers also gave feedbacks to students on the language focus during marking. The LAC Project conducted by the University of Hong Kong on Liberal Studies was completed in the first term. With the insights and comments given by the support team, LS teachers tailor-made their own materials for consolidation in the second term. Cultivation of positive values in life (a) Whole school programme The cultivation of positive values and a caring and supportive school culture is the tradition of the school. The meaning of TOPs refers not only to Tak Oi Persons, but also the positive values of having targets, being optimistic and persevering. This message was well received by the school community. Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 7 To sustain a serving and sharing culture, students were provided with opportunities to participate in community services. Through working for others, positive values were further strengthened. In the past years, we have been building up good bonding with different parties in and outside our district. The Outing and Services Team organized tutorial classes for the primary schools, visits to elderly homes and provision of other voluntary services. The English Department has also run English programmes such as Read Aloud Programme and English Day Camp for two primary schools in Tsz Wan Shan. The School Promotion and Public Relations Team has also helped arrange a Mid-autumn Festival game booth in a primary school in the district and provided school tours for primary schools’ students, teachers and parents. By doing these, we have not only displayed a positive image of our students but also built a closer relationship with different parties in the community. To cultivate positive value and attitudes, various teams in Student Support Committee and Religious and Life Committee have organized a wide range of award programmes and activities including the Self Development Award Scheme, Punctuality Award, workshops, talks and seminars with the presence of current teachers, guest speakers and alumni. (Appendix 3 & 4). This year, an Alumni Sharing Night was organized by the Mass Programme & Student Leaders Development Team in which 20 alumni shared the criteria and different aspects of their careers as well as their experience in facing challenges in life. The “Big Sisters” had given the S6 students a better insight into different careers and helped them set a clearer life goal before their graduation. The religious theme of 2014/15 was ‘With God, all things are possible!’ which was echoed through everyday morning prayers, prayer services, School Mass, Religious Week Activities, Religious Sharing, Katso Days, as well as structured Ethics and Religious Education lessons. (Appendix 5). Special after-school care programmes were carried out for junior form students with special needs in learning assistance and growth supports. Besides the S1 Personal Growth Programme conducted by the Health Department, a S3 Sex Education Workshop was held to help students develop an ethical and moral attitude towards sex. The “SUN” Growth programme 「從 SUN 出發成長計劃」was designed for selected students in S2 and S3. Students participated in various challenging activities to boost their self-understanding and to build up their self-confidence. (b) Leadership Development Leadership training continued with the focus on student leader empowerment. Various posts of responsibility of the different student leader groups such as Committees of the Student Council and the Four Houses, Prefects, Committees of the ECA groups, Guidance Prefects, Moral and Civic Education Student Team, Careers Guidance Prefects, Religious Education Student Team, Student Librarians, School Ambassadors and etc. were taken up by students, which provided them with ample Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 8 opportunities to serve their fellow schoolmates, to develop their potentials and to exercise their leadership skills. The distribution of the posts across different forms was listed in the table below. Form S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 Total Number of students taking up posts of responsibility as student leaders 32 42 78 85 148 43 428 To orientate and empower the student leaders into their posts of responsibility, Leadership training camps and workshops were organized for Prefects and Student Council and House Committee members, Student Librarians, ECA Committee members and Guidance Prefects (Appendix 6). The S4 Leadership Training Camp was held in October 2014. Over 90% of the students participated in the training agreed that it enhanced their social competence as they could build up a positive relationship with each other. The programme helped them to have a better self-understanding and set goals for their new school life in NSS. The camp also provided them with chances to make a breakthrough in attempting new challenges. They agreed that it enhanced their leadership skills and raised their awareness towards their leading roles among peers. Together with the class building programme, S4 students were better prepared for the endeavor of NSS studies and the taking up of the various posts of responsibility in the school community. The ‘TOSS APPS” student leaders’ training programme was continued. The recruited S3 and S4 “TOSS APPS” group received a comprehensive training organized by the Mass Programme & Students Leaders Development Team, teachers, the school social worker as well as some alumni to enhance their self confidence, to nourish their leadership attributes and skills as well as to reinforce their roles of student leaders in the coming school years. They helped out in the Pre-S1 Training Camp during July 2015 and have been a positive role model for the new blood of the school. (c) Class Building Class teachers’ periods were scheduled for S1 to S6 students with different focuses such as self-management and routine building (S1), life skills and values through community service (S2), sexual education, career & life planning and subject selection (S3), time management and NSS adaptation (S4), introduction of multiple pathways and stress management (S5 and S6). A structured lesson for Class Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 9 Teachers’ meetings together with a member from the Student Support Committee was arranged for each form in each cycle to facilitate communication and to enhance the support network between various parties in the school community. Guidance Team supplied resources for class teachers to tailor make materials in order to convey positive attitudes and suitable guidance for their classes. A Stress Management workshop was arranged for S5 students with the assistance of Class Teachers and the social worker. Students were given useful ways to handle stress related to their studies and future career development. Class teachers were involved in all the activities held in the Activity Afternoons for the junior form students; therefore, the messages in the assemblies can be better echoed and reinforced in their daily contact with the students. Achievements 2014-2015 was another fruitful year with regard to the achievements of the members in the school community. Our students participated actively in various activities and competitions both inside and outside school this year. Various awards were obtained in the academic, physical as well as aesthetic aspects (Appendix 7). The awards and prizes received included the Outstanding Students Award in the 7th Kowloon Region Outstanding Students Award 2014-2015, Outstanding Student Awards for both Junior form and Senior Form in the 8th Wong Tai Sin District Outstanding Students Selection 2014-2015, championships and prizes in Interschool Speech and Music Festivals, prizes in Hong Kong Schools Sports Federation (HKSSF) Athletics Competition, Best Debater Awards in the 14th Basic Law Debating Competition, Hong Kong Biology Olympiad for Secondary Schools and 3-D Printing Competition, etc. The results of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) continued to be promising. 104 out of 138 students (75.4%) in our school, when compared with day school candidates (40.3%), have met 3322, the general entrance requirements for Four-year Undergraduate University programmes. There were 13 subjects with percentages of 5**-4 above all school percentages, among which M2 achieved 100%, Biology and History achieved 71.1% and 69.6% respectively, which were much higher than those of all day schools results i.e. 44.8% and 46.9%. Liberal Studies achieved 67.4% which was as well much higher than the all school percentage of 36.3%. The university admission rate under the JUPAS system was 62%, which was much higher than the Hong Kong schools average of 36.14%. The encouraging JUPAS offer rates were not only the reflection of the students’ perseverance and hard work but also the teachers’ good concerted efforts to develop and stretch the students’ Tak Oi Secondary School School Report 2014/15 10 potentials as well as the careers guidance offered to the students by the various parties at school. Use of Grants The school has fully utilized various grants and resources we had to enhance students’ potentials and to cater for students’ special needs, both in academic and non-academic areas. The details are listed in Appendix 8 to Appendix 16. Forthcoming Challenges Due to the shrinking number of students in the territory, the uncertainty towards the S1 intake still persists in the coming year. S1 new students may have difficulty adapting to their secondary school education with English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI), so continuous effort will be spent on laying a good foundation for them on the core subjects, Chinese, English and Mathematics as well as good habit formation. With the establishment of the Learning and Teaching Development Team, the culture of the sharing of good strategies of learning as well as effective pedagogy of teaching will be further developed to raise the teaching performance of the school community. Besides, nurturing reading skills and enhancing the use of IT in Education, together with tackling learning diversity are inevitable challenges. Last but not the least, the need to cater for students with special education needs seems unavoidable. Important endeavors of the school in the coming year also include equipping students with good values and qualities to face challenges they encounter in life as the data from APASO Survey 2014-2015 have continuously reflected that there is an increasing number of students who are having a lower emotional stability. Conclusion The year 2014-2015 signified not only the end of the 2012-2015 3-year Development Cycle but also the commencement of a new 3-year planning, which would bring the school to a new chapter. With the completion of the External School Review 2014, the celebrations for the 45th Anniversary of the school and the establishment of the Incorporated Management Committee in August 2015, the whole school community has indeed experienced an unforgettable year, which was full of hard work, yet excitement, achievement and joy. With God - All things are possible! We believe that with the clear development directions and the passion for education, the Tak Oi Community will continue to nurture our students with quality education as well as to provide them with a loving and caring environment for growth with Joy and Thanksgiving. The programme was quite successful in consolidating students’ understanding of the grammar items learnt. According to the observation of teachers and the results of the evaluation questionnaires, the overall performance of the tutors was satisfactory. It was encouraging that participating students found the classes useful as a whole. S3-S5 students practiced the fundamental exercises in a small-class environment. They benefited from the individual caring and assistance from our past students. The participants worked hard to complete the assignment assigned by the tutors in the lessons and also after lessons at home. The learning atmosphere of lessons was good and most of them actively engaged in the lessons. The ten lessons conducted by the experienced tutors from England Education Centre were well-structured with different strands and topics included. Students enjoyed learning advanced Mathematics contents through tutors’ demonstration, students’ class practices and after-school assignment. There were also assessments in the middle and by the end of the courses to assess students’ learning standards and progress. Tutors responded that most of the students were engaged in lessons but great learning diversity could be found in the class especially in the S2-S3 group. 37 Subject Departments/ Teams Name of Programme No. of disadvantaged students served Music Department Vocal Training for the Junior Choir (S1) 30 Mass Programme and Student Leaders Development Team Academic Enhancement Team Academic Enhancement Team Academic Enhancement Team After School Care Programme (S1 & S3) Holiday revision class (S1) Pre-exam revision classes (S1 – S3) Post exam revision classes (S1 – S3) Tak Oi Secondary School 12 51 42 18 School Report 2014/15 Evaluation (Effectiveness of the programme, including students’ learning and affective outcomes) The result in the 2015 Hong Kong School Music Festival is good and satisfactory. The Junior Choir performed well on the Graduation Day, in the School Singing Contest as well as in the Christmas Caroling in Telford Plaza. The programme is effective. Most of the students were able to have a better time management and finish the homework and revision effectively. They also built up a positive way when facing problems. With extra exercises and under the guidance of tutors, students were exposed more on the foundation of English, LS and IS. Because of the small group setting, students got more chances to read some important vocabularies during the lessons. The programme was quite successful in enhancing students’ motivations and building up a learning atmosphere before the examination. Students found the course useful. Most of them thought the class size, duration, time of lesson conducted, the total number of lessons were appropriate. Most students were quite satisfactory with the programme. They agreed that it was helpful in their revision. This year we have teachers in the class room to guide them as previous year. The students revised and practiced many fundamental concepts and vocabularies in the subjects of English, Chinese, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Liberal Studies during the programme. This can get them well prepared for the new academic year. 38 Subject Departments/ Teams Name of Programme No. of disadvantaged students served Mass Programme and Student Leaders Development Team 「從 S.U.N. 出 發成長計劃」 (S2 & S3) 22 Mass Programme and Student Leaders Development Team TOSS APPS Leadership Enhancement Project (S4) Athletics Team Athletics training (S1 – S5) Volleyball Team Volleyball training (S1 – S6) Chinese Orchestra Chinese Orchestra Training (S1 – S5) Tak Oi Secondary School 30 26 26 10 School Report 2014/15 Evaluation (Effectiveness of the programme, including students’ learning and affective outcomes) The students showed a very good performance in the balloon twisting service in our school’s Open Days. They showed confidence in catering for the visitors’ needs and were self-motivated to search for the new designs of balloon twisting. They set appropriate goals and plans for themselves for the coming academic year. The project was very successful, Over 90% of the participants agreed that the project helped them to enhance their selfconfidence and leadership skills. Over 90% of the participants agreed that they acquired the skills of organizing activities. Over 90% of the participants would like to be the role models and take up the leading roles of student teams in the coming academic year. The basic skills of team members have improved through a variety of skill training sessions. They have good relationship with the coaches. Although they did not join the HKSSF Interschool Athletics Competition this year, they show eagerness to join other competitions such as Age Group and District Athletics Meet.
