2013 An n ua l Report 1875 S. Geneva Road • Orem, Utah 84058 • (801) 437-0490 • www.clearhorizonsacademy.org Clear Horizons Academy We exist to transform the lives of children and families affected by autism through innovative, evidence-based ideas and interventions for learning Letter from the Boa rd Cha ir Because of the efforts and donations from many people Clear Horizons Academy was able to increase its services. In 2005, when the Hurst Wood Education Foundation was organized, it had three strategic objectives: First, develop and deliver evidence-based educational opportunities for children with autism through a non-profit private flagship school. While we love and respect the work being done by the public schools, we believe Dennis Rislove, former superintendent of schools and now president of Adler Graduate School, when he stated, “It’s difficult to have a program that focuses on autism in the public schools … these children need calm and quiet, not a lot of distraction or simulation.” With your help that model flagship school now exists at our Orem, Utah campus, with special features including soundproof rooms, a life skills room, sensory rooms, smart boards, iPads, etc. that these special children need to learn. Second, develop and deliver an educational strategy that disseminates and strengthens best practices within Utah and nationally for those with autism and their families. During the past 18 months, thanks to the vision of UVU President Matthew Holland, and with the help of a grant from the HWEF, Utah Valley University now has a full-time director for their new Center for Autism Studies. As students complete UVU classes that lead to a Certificate of Proficiency in Autism or a Minor in Autism Studies, they will also have the opportunity to put those skills into practice, completing their required fieldwork practicum at organizations like Clear Horizons Academy, working side by side with our expert staff. Last September, we hosted a workshop featuring nationally recognized author and educator Paula Kluth, whose presentation on inclusion and differentiating instruction for students with autism was provided to more than 100 parents, therapists and educators from throughout the state. Clear Horizons Academy along with SaharaCares produced and is now distributing nationwide a 30 minute Video, “Autism: A Survival Guide for Caregivers.” This is the third video in a series on working with children with autism. (All videos in the series may be viewed at our website: www.clearhorizonsacademy.org) Third, develop an environment where autism is a high priority among decision-makers within our communities and nationwide. This is being accomplished in many ways including: meeting regularly with community leaders; speaking at service group meetings; inviting community groups to use the school for meetings and activities; offering private and group tours of our flagship school to educate people on autism; hosting events specifically for community leaders; and educating legislators about autism and needed changes in laws that either hinder or would help families of children with autism. Thank you for your support of the Hurst Wood Education Foundation DBA Clear Horizons Academy. We are excited about what you have helped us to accomplish, however, our work has only begun. With your help we look forward to being able to help more children develop skills and abilities they would not otherwise have. 2 J. Brent Wood Chairman, Board of Trustees Many schools offer treatments for autism to help children learn basic information, but offer little help with other issues that this disorder presents. Autism can be very isolating. My son’s autism left me with a child who was trapped inside his own world. One of the hardest things I encountered on this journey with him was the lack of communication both with him and from him. As his mother, I want so badly to provide him with the things that he wants and needs. I want to provide him tools to develop lasting relationships of his own. I want him to be the best possible version of himself. Using the DIR/Floortime Approach, we, in partnership with Clear Horizons Academy, have provided those very things for him. His teachers and paraeducators have taken his once isolated and lonely world and developed his trust to allow others inside. They have offered him sensory support that his body is constantly seeking. He now has growing relationships with his mom, dad and brothers. His ability to communicate has grown along with his ability to be a part of our world, instead of trapped inside his own. Through the painstaking efforts of the staff at Clear Horizons Academy, we are working towards a brighter future for our son. Clear Horizons Academy is a nonprofit private school that specializes in educating children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The school is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization which allows the community to make tax deductible donations in support of our important mission. The Academy serves the whole community by holding educational sessions on autism and working with other educational organizations serving students with autism. We have enrolled children from Salt Lake and Utah counties. Quick Facts What makes Clear Horizons Academy unique? We are the only nonprofit private school in Utah County that specializes in teaching children with ASD above a preschool age. We are also the only private school in Utah that uses the DIR Model as its foundation, which encourages a developmentally appropriate, individualized program for each child that is relationship-based. We offer a nine-month program that follows the traditional school year and also have an optional summer program, which allows our students to attend school year-round and to continually make progress. What ages are the children who attend? How big are classes? Our current age level for enrollment is 3 to 16 years old. In addition, we consider children a year above or below these ages on an individual basis, taking into account the child’s needs. With the help of paraeducators, the average teacher/student ratio is 1-to-2. Based on a child’s needs, a 1-to1 ratio for certain activities may also be integrated into their individual program. On average our classes have 9 students with a maxium of 12 students. We strongly focus on children receiving as much individual help as possible. How ARE Clear Horizons programs geared toward A child’s needs? As part of our educational services, we incorporate additional techniques the child may need, such as Sensory Integration, Errorless Learning, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), video modeling and other therapeutic strategies. We also work closely with parents to help them help their child progress. Quarterly team meetings with parents allow our staff to continually measure the progress of each child and to make adjustments as necessary. The teachers listen to us and incorporate our suggestions. They also give us feedback. I feel like Clear Horizons Academy is a team rooting for my son’s success, and supporting him with his individual needs. – Clear Horizons Academy Parent What does it cost to enroll a child at Clear Horizons Academy? Tuition for each child varies. Part of a child’s tuition may be subsidized by a Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship (Utah State funding) if the child qualifies. In addition, the school holds many public fundraising events and receives donations from corporations and other generous charities and foundations. This allows our tuition to be based on each individual family’s ability to pay rather than on a fixed monthly or annual tuition rate - making it affordable for everyone. 5 2013 Fun dra isin g High lights 4th Annual Clear Horizons Classic Clear Horizons hosted another successful golf tournament in 2013. Over 120 golfers enjoyed 18 holes at Riverside Country Club in Provo featuring a shotgun scramble format. We enjoyed full-day radio coverage from 1280 The Zone. Participants generously purchased many Scholarship Bears and auction items. The day concluded with many prizes. We were pleased to have raised $26,300 from this event. 8th Annual Gala Dinner and Auction As in prior years, Clear Horizon’s Gala and Auction was our largest and most successful event. The 2013 Gala was held in November at Clear Horizons Academy. Thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers, the Gala set new records in attendance, number of auction items donated, sponsorship revenue, and overall funds raised – more than $136,000. Clear Horizons was also pleased to recognize Tom and Shauna Mabey, founders of SaharaCares, and Matthew S. Holland, President of Utah Valley University, for their significant contributions to the autism community.
