2013 Annual Report “Everybody on this stage and everybody involved with this production—including the actors, musicians, theater owners and producers—donated their time so that we can give all the proceeds from tonight to The Actors Fund. I haven’t always been the fabulous diva that you see standing here. There was a time when it was a little bit difficult for me. I was directed to The Actors Fund and they sustained me. I mean they really sustained me, from health insurance to paying my rent. They take so much care and there is so much grace in how they help and it’s a consistent help. It’s never something that you feel like you can’t ask for. I think the biggest lesson for me at that period of time in my life was learning that the best thing that you can do is ask for help. Organizations like this are so much more necessary than ever before.” — Tony® Award winner Billy Porter on his Kinky Boots Actors Fund Special Performance The Actors Fund is a national human services organization that helps everyone— performers and those behind the scenes— who works in performing arts and entertainment, helping more than 17,000 people directly each year, and hundreds of thousands online. Serving professionals in film, theatre, television, music, opera, radio and dance, The Fund’s programs include social services and emergency financial assistance, health care and insurance counseling, affordable housing, and employment and training services. With offices in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, The Actors Fund has been—for 132 years—a safety net for those in need, crisis or transition. Visit www.actorsfund.org. Annual Report 2013 Dear Friends, More than 130 years ago, the entertainment community founded The Actors Fund to help fellow performing arts professionals in need. This insightful group of leaders saw that there was a hole that desperately needed to be filled, and they worked together to create an organization that continues to grow and change in order to help individuals in need, crisis or transition. Today, The Actors Fund family—our wonderful Board of Trustees, teams of advisors, dedicated staff, and volunteers—continues to assess the changing landscape to ensure that it will always be there to help everyone in our profession, from musicians to grips, writers to actors, carpenters to camera operators. To that end, in 2013 members of our Board of Trustees met for a Strategic Planning Retreat, which you can read more about on page pgs. 6–7. Staying ahead and adapting in these changing times is vital. In 2013 we helped more people than ever before: 17,319 individuals—a staggering 28% increase in just one year, and almost 46% more than five years ago. These numbers illustrate the fact that the services The Actors Fund offers are more in-demand than ever before, and this need shows no sign of abating. As always, we thank all of the people and organizations that help us achieve our goals: our Board of Trustees, the entertainment unions, theatre owners, arts organizations, foundations, corporations, individuals and others, each of whom provides unique input and support to help us help the community at large. And we thank our biggest supporter, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS: without you, we couldn’t help as many people as we do. We invite you to visit actorsfund.org to learn more, make a donation and to find out how you, too, can join our long-standing tradition of supporting our creative community. In 2013, The Actors Fund helped 17,319 people, 28% more than 2012 and 46% more than just five years ago. Watch the full series at actorsfund.org/Blog. The many offerings The Fund provides are available nationally to everyone working in the performing arts and entertainment, at whatever stage they are in their career—from the youngest actors or stagehands to retired musicians. We offer an array of 25 programs and services in four primary categories, which ensures we can provide a helping hand to all those in need, crisis or transition. From emergency financial assistance to HIV/AIDS support, health insurance counseling to women’s health programs, one-on-one sessions with social workers to employment and training services, affordable housing to seminars on a variety of topics, The Actors Fund fulfills a role in the community that is more vital than ever before. Social Services Health Services Our free and confidential social services cover a full range of categories. Licensed clinical social workers are available to provide counseling, financial assistance, practical help and support to address the many difficulties that can arise throughout one’s life and career. In 2013, heath care was at the forefront of our nation’s consciousness—especially with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act at the end of the year. To help members of our community take advantage of newly available affordable health insurance plans, our Artists Health Insurance Resource Center (AHIRC) held a record number of seminars and counseling sessions to educate individuals and small businesses about their options and what they needed to do to enroll (see p. 10 for more). We also continued to provide free medical care to those in need via New York’s Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic (the only one of its kind in Manhattan) and Los Angeles’s Performing Artists Clinic (in collaboration with MusiCares and the Venice Family Clinic). 6,267 people received clinical services and emergency financial assistance 753 people participated in our free groups and seminars $2.69 million in emergency financial assistance was distributed to 3,291 people for essential needs, such as preventing evictions, securing medical insurance or paying utilities “It’s a really comforting thing to know that there’s somebody out there who understands and cares.” 1,445 patients received 3,161 free visits to NYC’s Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic 65 patients received 257 free visits to the Performing Artists Clinic 586 volunteer doctor visits 6,984 participants attended our free health insurance seminars or received individual counseling through our Artists Health Insurance Resource Center 1,414 patients attended Free Health Screenings and Health Fairs or received Flu Shots 431,999 individual visits to the AHIRC.org website 4 the actors fund Affordable Housing The Actors Fund Work Program Finding affordable housing—especially in the nation’s entertainment hubs—continues to grow ever more challenging. In New York, our affordable housing seminars were often at maximum capacity. In Los Angeles, The Fund worked one-onone with clients, especially seniors, who needed help finding new homes and moved forward with the project in Downtown (see p. 14). Additionally: Because many performing arts and entertainment jobs are episodic, there are times when people need to find supplemental or alternative income to make ends meet—or they may even decide to make a career change. The Actors Fund Work Program (AWP) offers classes, seminars, groups, tuition assistance and counseling to help its members find work that perfectly suits their interests and skills. In 2013, there was a 31% increase in people utilizing AWP’s services in just one year. In 2013, 434 residents called our three existing affordable housing locations home: Our skilled nursing and assisted living facility—The Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, NJ—was home to 144 seniors. The Dorothy Ross Friedman Residence, Manhattan, NY The Schermerhorn, Brooklyn, NY The Palm View, West Hollywood, CA 3,378 entertainment professionals participated in AWP’s employment and training services 270 people took advantage of 15 different free classes 922 new jobs reported 1,261 people received oneon-one career counseling sessions 2,998 individuals attended 38 different workshops and seminars Learn more about our programs at actorsfund.org annual report 2013 5 Strategizing for the Future of The Fund The Retreat explored five main areas: Senior Services With the dramatic growth of the senior population in the US, The Actors Fund needs to expand its offerings to help the growing number of seniors in our community. Renovate and increase capacity at The Lillian Booth Actors Home, our nursing home and assisted living care facility in Englewood, NJ Increase social and outreach services to help seniors maintain independent living in their homes as they age For more on how we’re currently helping our seniors, see p. 12. Social Services and Workforce Development In order to balance the consistent and significant growth in demand for our programs, we plan to strengthen and expand our Social Services by hiring additional staff. In 1882, our founders created a community to address the distinctive needs of theatre people— creative people whose talents and aspirations set them apart and led them to a road less traveled. The needs of this unique community have continually changed through the years, and it is imperative that the support and care The Actors Fund provides also adapts to this ever-changing landscape. In March 2013, members of The Actors Fund Board of Trustees convened in New York for a retreat to discuss and refine the plans put forth in a Strategic Plan presented in 2012, which not only honors our mission, but also considers the day-to-day realities of the organization and charts a course for an effective future. The purpose of the retreat was to explore, discuss and recommend how The Actors Fund can continue to organize, prepare, and reinvent itself—as it has successfully done in the past—so that we may continue and enhance our support to all entertainment professionals in need. On March 18, 2013 a dedicated group of Actors Fund Trustees and industry leaders gathered at New York City’s Time Warner Center, hosted by Trustee Martha Nelson, to spend the day exploring how best to serve our community in the next five years. 6 the actors fund Participants included: Front row (l-r): Four-time Oscar Nominated actor Annette Bening; GRAMMY Foundation Sr. Vice President Kristen Madsen; Cartoon Network VP of Casting and Talent Development Sharon Lieblein; Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS Executive Director Tom Viola; former Deloitte Financial Advisory Services partner George Zuber; Stage Manager’s Committee Co-Chairs Peter Wolf and Sherry Cohen; former ATPAM President Merle Debuskey; Real estate developer David Steiner; former SAG New York Division President Joyce Gordon; ASCAP Director of Musical Theatre Michael Kerker; Lodestone Banking Consultancy Advisory Board Chairman Robert O. The passage of the Affordable Care Act has brought us within reach of that goal and we spent much of 2013 educating our community about their options and helping them access new, affordable insurance plans. We helped 6,984 people understand the law through workshops, seminars and one-on-one consultations, and also spearheaded the launch of The Fund’s new e-Learning site. Additionally, AHIRC.org logged 431,999 individual website visits. Helping the Entertainment industry hubs in New York and California In New York and California, we helped thousands in the creative community learn everything they needed to know to take full advantage of health care reform. In New York, 363 individuals attended 58 AHIRC seminars at The Fund’s offices in Times Square (including the popular weekly Getting and Keeping Health Insurance). We also worked in coalition with performing arts and entertainment unions, arts councils and membership associations to spread the word. To help people better understand their Covered California options, AHIRC reached out to individuals via seminars in the Los Angeles office and workshops throughout the state. And for those who couldn’t make it in person, The Fund worked with people via a special toll-free telephone number. …as well as everyone in-between! To make sure artists in other regions had access to AHIRC’s helpful information, our social workers made themselves available over the phone and traveled across the country to offer workshops in places like Aspen, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. In 2013, AHIRC expanded its workshop and seminar offerings to include visual arts and crafts professionals, as well as small arts organizations like theater and dance companies, in order to help them better understand the changing health care laws. In addition to the ever-popular Getting and Keeping Health Insurance Seminar, 2013’s special ACA workshops included: Learn Online! In 2013, AHIRC spearheaded the launch of The Actors Fund’s new e-Learning Center (which quickly expanded into our other social service program branches, including The Actors Fund Work Program). The e-Learning center provides interactive tutorials in the form of multimedia presentations that offer information, resources and practical tips from our experts. 2013 tutorials include: Medicare Basics Help with Medicare Costs Getting Medications Discounted or Free Healthcare Reform Basics Returning to School Special thanks to Artists’ Committee Co-Chair Laura Linney, who recorded a brief e-Learning Center video welcome! Today we offer a range of services, including support in the midst of a health crisis, coordination of in-home medical care, emergency financial assistance, addressing challenges with Medicare, help accessing safe and affordable housing, and much, much more. Meet the Artists at The Lillian Booth Actors Home The Lillian Booth Actors Home is an especially important and cherished part of The Actors Fund, and has its own unique history that has always been intertwined with the lives of artists. Service to our community’s members as they age has always been at the forefront of The Actors Fund’s mission. We are committed to providing a warm and dignified place for people from the creative community who have given so much to our society. At right are just a few of our wonderful residents. To inform our programming and better understand the needs of seniors, we conducted a survey in the New York City neighborhoods of Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen, historically home to many in the arts and entertainment. Included in this survey were the residents of Manhattan Plaza, the largest affordable housing complex in the nation dedicated to performing arts professionals which is located in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City. The survey was designed to provide a snapshot of how well seniors are faring as they grow older in their communities. Over 1,200 seniors were surveyed and valuable data was collected about their social service and healthcare needs, as well as community supports and services. The findings show pressing concerns such as low incomes, living alone, hazards in the physical environment, and lack of awareness of helpful resources and services. The report features a series of recommendations that respond to these concerns, including the development of a Seniors Resource Guide to help people access services available to them in their communities. We also continue to lead a working group of senior-serving agencies to address additional recommendations. Our work on the Seniors Community Survey will better position The Fund to plan for the future needs of our elder colleagues in entertainment. The document focuses on ways municipal and county governments can better support the creative industries in Los Angeles County, and provides ideas and feedback regarding the future structure and goals of these efforts in the region. Supporting the Creative Economy in Los Angeles Keith McNutt, Stanton Fellow Director of the Western Region, The Actors Fund In 2003, The Actors Fund partnered with SAG-AFTRA to launch Looking Ahead, an innovative program tailored to help young performers and their families address the unique issues associated with working in the entertainment industry. Looking Ahead works with young performers ages 9–18 in the Los Angeles area to develop the values, skills and confidence they need to make successful transitions to fulfilling adult lives, focusing on a number of primary components: educational counseling; individual, family, and group counseling; informational and educational seminars; programs for parents; group activities for young performers to connect with one another; and community service. In June, the Looking Ahead family celebrated a memorable decade of successful growth and service at LA’s Taglyan Complex. Hosted by Looking Ahead Advisory Committee members including (l-r): Chris Allport, Vice Chair Sharon Lieblein, Chair Fred Savage, Darby Hinton, Nancy Wileman, Judy Taylor and Ray Bradford as well as alumni, families, supporters and members of our dedicated Advisory Council gathered for an unforgettable gala awards dinner that featured a special performance by Goodnight Argent. Visit LookingAheadProgram.org. This type of support is imperative: according to The Otis Report on the Creative Economy of the Los Angeles Region, creative industries comprise the fourth largest sector of the Los Angeles regional economy, providing over 640,000 jobs, $200 billion in sales and $3 billion in tax revenue. They can no longer be overlooked as a matter of coordinated municipal and county policy in the region. To download and read Keith’s report, visit actorsfund.org/SpecialReports. Revitalizing the Creative Heart of Downtown LA One of the ways The Actors Fund is working to support Los Angeles’s creative community is through affordable housing. The Fund continues to evaluate opportunities to spearhead affordable artist housing in the developing areas of the city in collaboration with Artspace, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and others. Preliminary research supported by a grant from ArtPlace revealed a great demand for affordable artist housing in Los Angeles, and our vision is to develop a mixed-use arts facility that would combine 50–60 units of affordable housing for artist families with complementary space for non-profit arts organizations and enterprises. The Fund continues to work with its partners towards the goal of identifying a viable site and beginning negotiations. 14 the actors fund Valley Days One of The Actors Fund’s most popular offerings in Los Angeles are the monthly Valley Days events, held in partnership with Local 80 IATSE, Motion Picture Studio Grips/ Crafts Service in Burbank. Realizing that many of those in the entertainment community living in Southern California were finding it difficult to travel the long distances to The Fund’s Hollywood office, we partnered to host our staff off-site and bring our services to a wider audience. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Local 80 IATSE, our colleagues who live in the San Fernando Valley not only have easy access to our services, but also have a place to gather and support each other as a community of performing arts and entertainment professionals. annual report 2013 15 Support and Creativity in the Community 3 3 Thank you, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA)! Trustees of BC/EFA celebrated support for The Actors Fund at its meeting in October. Our leading supporter, BC/EFA granted $4,300,000 in Fiscal Year 2013 to support six core programs: the HIV/AIDS Initiative, Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, Actors Fund Work Program, The Dancers’ Resource and The Stage Managers’ Project. The Fund could not help the way it does without BC/EFA’s support. Learn more at broadwaycares.org. On Valentine’s Day, three cast members from Mamma Mia’s Broadway show joined residents for a lively Q&A in The Lillian Booth Actors Home’s MusiCares Salon. The trio shared their experiences as current Broadway performers, and asked the older generation to share some of their wisdom. 3 Once again, dedicated Actors Fund team members in NYC and LA participated in the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Revlon Run/Walk, raising nearly $22,000 to support our Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and to help fight women’s cancers. Looking Ahead held one of its largest 3 community service events to date, when nearly 150 people attended its Second Annual Children’s Cancer Care Packaging Party, hosted by Woodbury University in Burbank, CA. A project of former Looking Ahead member and summer staffer, Hannah Pitts, the event resulted in the assembly of 200 care packages, and some of the generous Looking Ahead members, staff and guests donated their hair for wigs. 3 the actors fund 3 16 Among AWP-LA’s many events was the career panel “Flexible Jobs in the Health Care Industry.” Participants gathered for advice from speakers including Dr. Bob Plotke, Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at Concorde Career College; Jenna Coker-Jones, Certified Holistic Health Coach; Dean Mark Pracher and Carmen Dones from West LA College; and Jewel Thais-Williams, Holistic Acupuncturist and Founder and Executive Director of the Village Health Foundation. 3 The community at The Lillian Booth Actors Home joined more than 80,000 people from around the world to see Helen Mirren in The Audience. We thank Julie and Robert Bourchard-Young of BY Experience, who donated the projection equipment and are providing world class entertainment via live broadcasts to our residents. annual report 2013 17 Thank You to Our 2013 Supporters The Actors Fund has maintained a Four Star rating from Charity Navigator, the largest and most utilized evaluator of charities in the US., for the past four years. Gifts can be made through a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan and many other means. Membership is granted to those who pledge that they have set aside an estate gift so thousands of performing arts and entertainment professionals in need can rely on The Fund in the years to come. For information on joining this special legacy of supporters, contact Jay Haddad, Manager of Planned Giving, at 917.281.5928, email jhaddad@actorsfund.org or visit actorsfund.org/PlannedGiving. Forrest left the bulk of his estate to fund a retirement home in Philadelphia, which merged with The Actors Fund’s Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, NJ, a little more than a century later; its main section bears his name to this day. The name of this great actor and humanitarian also lives on in our Edwin Forrest Society. Above, Western Council member Charlotte Rae and Patricia Morison celebrated with guests in Los Angeles; Actor Michael Hajek read Shakespeare for residents and guests at The Lillian Booth Actors Home, here with late Trustee Honey Waldman.
