The article will appear in the California School Counselor (Winter 2008). Robert Hansen coauthors article with Linda Hansen to describe The Six C’s: Framework for Conducting Better, School Counselor Interviews. The Six C’s “The Emotional Impact of High Stakes Testing on Students and Teachers: A Holistic, Culturally Contextual Case Study of One Group of High Risk Students and Their Events “The pen is the tongue of the mind.” --Miguel de Cervantes Jackie Allen, Patt Ensey, Sonja Lopez and Mark Matzaganian are certified CTC Accreditation Team members and will be reviewing local universities this spring. Their training took place this summer in Sacramento. The Institute for Early Childhood Education will be hosting 40 early childhood professionals for a workshop day on Friday, November 14 from 9AM to 3PM with Susie Koon. The title of Ms. Koon’s workshop is “Building a cohesive, competent and caring adult community through effective leadership.” The leadership skills professionals will develop are designed to improve quality in the ECE classrooms. This day is planned and supported by Barbara Nicoll from the University of La Verne, Carolyn Perry of Citrus Community, and Holly Reynolds from the Child Development Center at the Fairplex. University of La Verne Literacy Center receives a literacy grant of $24,500 from Verizon. “Service is a fundamental tenet of our mission at the University of La Verne,” said university president Steve Morgan. “And I can think of no better way to serve the community than to Teachers,” is a recently published book by Laurie Schroeder and available on Amazon.com. provide young people the opportunities available to them here at the Literacy Center.” One of the success stories who appeared at the ceremony was Kenne Beamon, an Alta Loma High senior, who came to the center with failing grades and is now on the honor roll. “When you look at statistics like 7 million individuals in this country can’t read, said Gary George, Verizon’s director of governmental and external affairs, “This center is dedicated to turning those numbers around and has proven it has what it takes to make it happen.” 2 Conferences/Presentations Sonja Lopez presents her views of living and working in Italy, Germany and Turkey at the California Council on Teacher Education in San Diego. She is also chairing two panels at the Alliance for International Education, Istanbul Turkey. Panels are: “To EU or not EU: Changes in Turkish Primary Education” and “National/Multicultural/ International: The Misunderstandings of American and Turkish Teachers Using the International Baccalaureate Organization’s Primary Years Program.” Additionally, she works on an innovative, online MAT (Masters of Arts in Teaching) redesign team. La Verne in Viet NamPeggy Redman and Larry Machi provided leadership training to future leaders and decision-makers in Viet Nam University settings. Their work with the University Administration has set the stage for future work in the summer of 2009. The emphasis of the summer 2008 event was to begin planning for a continuing relationship with CEOL faculty and Viet Nam. Ainsworth, Margaret Lynch, Shawn Judson, Anita Flemington, Phil Linscomb, John Cruz, Art Delgado, Ken Noonan, Larry Kemper, Gary Thomas, Joe Ovic, Jay Hoffman, Bonnie Drolet, and Nancy Hogg on October 8th to support a purpose and mission for the center. The center is designed to elevate the discussion of local educational policy and bring information and research to bear on issues of importance to local K-12 policy makers. A Think Tank meeting is scheduled for November 14th with approximately 35 educational leaders. Jan Pilgreen’s graduate students, Brenda Burt, Shayna Caraway, Sarah Eichen, Catherine Fair, Candice Gallego-Cory, Chris Jimenez, Julie Kawai, Erica Perez, Sean Smith and Misty Tabon will present at the CATESOl Conference at Biola University this October. Nancy Walker will present two papers for the National Reading Conference in Orlando in December: Exploring Two Content Area Teachers’ Creativity and Use of Multiple Resources to Enhance Student Comprehension in English and History. Constructing Harmony: Does Teacher Knowledge Effect Change in Adolescent Reading Motivation? Inside Story “One must prepare himself for what he wishes to be tomorrow. Preparedness is better than hope” --Alexis Lawrence Romanoff The California Educational Policy Center at the University of La Verne is launched with an initiative by Homa Shabahang, Tom Harvey and Mark Goor. An exploratory meeting was held on July 9th followed by a meeting of Board Members, Pat Teacher Leadership Institute provides leadership for twenty teacher leaders from Bonita, Pomona and Corona Unified School Districts. These Teacher Leaders represent elementary, middle and high schools. Each group identified a change to be addressed in the upcoming academic year 20082009. Since its inception in 1994, the Center for Teacher Leadership maintains three goals: (1) To collaborate with local school districts in identifying teacher leadership training needs, (2) To identify existing and emerging teacher leaders, (3) To provide training and support for teacher leaders. Tom McGuire and Peggy Redman have provided leadership for the Center since its initial offering of support for teacher leaders. 3 CEOL Learning Community Initiatives “I do not fear computers. Every moment is ripe with opportunity.” --Noah Benshea Professors As Writers group will meet to build on the research that was presented at the CEOL college wide meeting held in September. Laura Hyatt presented findings from a survey highlighting the Faculty Research Culture. An interesting and affirming statistic is the 87.5% of Organizational Leadership Faculty published in the prior 2 years and 29.1% of the Education Faculty published in the prior 2 years with a combined percentage of 46.7. Additionally 60% of faculty have presented at academic conferences in the prior 2 years accounting for 39 conference presentations. The PAWs group is the product of Dean Goor’s invitation to work on collaboratively creating a colloquium for faculty scholarship. The group will meet October 29th to identify agenda preferences and a book review. Partnerships developed with Hesperia and Pomona Unified School Districts include placement of student teachers, collaboration with the Literacy Center and Ed.D. Research opportunities. Teacher Education, Special Education, and School Counseling Programs, the Regional Campuses Administration, and the Wilson Library are developing a Professional Development School partnership with Hesperia Unified School District Charter School, La Verne Elementary Preparatory Academy. Members of the PDS Steering Committee are Marsha Soboh (Development) Jennifer Scully (Curriculum Lab), Emily Shoemaker, Peggy Redman, Ingrid Carruth, and Steven Lee (Teacher Education), Patricia Taylor (Special Education), Laurie Schroeder, and Thierry Kolpin (School Counseling), Donna Bentley and Shelly Urbizagastegui (Wilson Library), Judy Henson and Renee Rivera (Regional Campuses Administration). Open College/Social Justice is a group of two dozen faculty members working on the initiative to discuss issues related to creating a college wide climate and culture of Social Justice. Bill Bearley has created a Blackboard site for our activities. Faculty are invited to send Bill electronic copies or links that they think are appropriate for reading and resources regarding social justice and related topics. They will be added to our Blackboard to stimulate discussions and for use with our students. Technology that enhances communication with our broader CEOL Community is being presented and implemented through faculty course development, blended teaching approaches and CTL presentations. Faculty and CTL combined their experiences and resources on October 29th to share their learnings about creating Blackboard and WebCT course delivery. A Whole New Mind written by Daniel Pink was the topic of small group faculty discussions during July, August and September. These discussions were summarized by faculty at the September College wide meeting. Discussion Groups presented their creative interpretation of the key ideas they will focus on during the academic year. The Ed.D. program will use this same book as their common text for a leadership assignment as they begin their new year of studies.
