With the rest of the Filipino community in Hong
Kong and the Friends International Club, we wish to
offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the
bereaved families of the eight victims of the hostage
siege in the Philippines, whose lives were lost in the
incident. Their deaths are a great loss to the people
of Hong Kong, China and the Philippines.
Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow. Words seem inadequate
to express the sadness we feel. But may we all wish that the prayers and
vigils offered by various leaders of the Filipino community in Hong Kong
to express their sympathy and sorrow for the families of the eight victims
lessen their grief and anger.
The Filipino community has sent messages of peace and love during the vigil
and wished that peace which comes from their heart and the memories of
love shared, will comfort them now and in the days ahead. May the comfort
of God help them during this difficult time and moments of their lives.
We all just wish that the truth of the incident will come out to shed light and
comfort the families of the victims and the Hong Kong government in order
to maintain a harmonious relationship and unity with each other.
We also wish and pray that the messages of the Filipino community in
sharing their grief and apologies for the incident are felt and may touch their
hearts and understand that we the Filipinos in Hong Kong are in one and
share their sentiments and care for them.
It is our hope that the incident will not affect the working conditions of the
Filipinos in the territory. We hoped that this unfortunate incident will not
damage the more than thirty years of diplomatic ties and solid friendship
between our countries and its nationals.
We yearn that our Chinese friends and other nationalities, will continue to
visit us in the future, as the incident is an isolated case and in no way reflects
the peace and order situation in our country.
We love Hong Kong and its people as it is already our second home, We love
the hospitalities and friendship that they share with us. We are happy with
the opportunity that they are giving to our fellow countrymen.
Again we would like to say that we are very sorry and saddened for the loss
of lives from the tragic hostage crisis. Our thoughts are with you and your
family.
This is the message from our hearts. . . “We Care, We sympathize, We are One
in Grief.”
Happy Reading !!
Mabuhay ang Filipino! We are still proud to be Pinoy.

What’s Cooking?
from the book, How to Process meat for Business and Family Consumption
Meal planning and preparation is
sometimes a difficult and challenging
task to do. In this page, Friends Club
International member and writer of “How
to Process Meat for Business and Family
Consumption, Volume I” Chloe Belle de
la Gente-Dogeno wishes to share some
recipes, procedures and tips in cooking
that will surely help everyone.
1.
(Juan 14:25). Suriin
ang sarili.
2.
Sabihin natin sa Diyos ang sakit na
nadarama natin dahil sa taong ito. Sa kanya
ilagak an gating pasaning ngayo’y dinaranas.
(Salmo 6:2-9).
Red Fish with Tomato Sauce

• 4 pieces Pisugo or any fish with white
meat, fried
• 3 pieces Tomatoes, blanch, peel- off
skin, cut in wedges
• 1 small White Onion Bulb, slice in
wedges
• Piece of Ginger, chopped
• 2 Cloves Garlic, crushed
• 1 1/2 tbsp Dark Wine
• Dash of Pepper
• Spring Onion Leaves or parsley for
Garnishing
• Salt and sugar to taste
Sauce:
• 2 tbsp Sugar
• 6 tbsp Tomato Catsup
• 1/4 tsp Salt
• 8 tbsp Water
Procedure:
1. Combine sauce mixture and set aside.
2. Fry fish in a pan. Use a paper towel to
remove excess oil. Arrange in a platter.
Set aside
3.Sauté ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and
onion bulb in a pan. Then stir- in dark
wine and pour-in the sauce mixture.
Sprinkle with a dash of white pepper
and season to taste with salt and
sugar.
4. Pour sauce mixture unto the fish and
garnish with spring onion leaves or
parsley. Serve hot.
NOTE: Fried Pork Chop and scrambled eggs
can also be use in this recipe instead of Fish
using the same sauce. Follow the cooking
procedure.
3.
Ikumpisal natin ang salang itong
hindi pagpapatawad (Juan 20:23).
4.
Hilingin sa Diyos na patawarin ang
taong iyon (Lucas 23: 34) at hilingin natin
patawarin tayo ng Diyos sa pagkimkim ng
galit (1 Juan 1:9).
5.
Huwag natin sisihin ang Diyos
katulad ng kawikaan 19:3 “ Ipinahamak ng tao
ang janyang sarili pagkatapos kay Yahweh ang
bagsak ng sisi.
6.
Hilingin sa Espiritu na dalhin sa
atin ang kanyang pagmamahal, kasiyahan
at kapayapaan upang ipalit sa dating poot at
hindi pagpapatawad.
Battle of talents in singing and dancing added merriment and
entertainment for the crowd which was first performed by the newly
organized association, “The Las Filipinas” dancers. They were also
guest performers like the Afreight Dancers, PNB Club, UVA Dance
Group, Dancing Friends, Roger and Janeth, Ms. Desa Alipio and Ms.
Babes Yntas serenaded the Lolas.
7.
Hilingin sa Diyos na basbasan ang
taong iyon. Ito ay simpleng pamamaraan at
kung sakaling nandoon pa rin, bumalik muli
sa umpisa.

Three Migrant Groups Undergo Livelihood Training
Balaoanians HK Association Fund Raising Event
by Chloe Belle de la Gente - Dogeno
by Cleofe Mendoza
Several Filipino Organizations are now becoming focus on the
Livelihood Programs for their members to be able to prepare them for
their eventual homecoming. For the month of August, three migrant
groups undergo Meat Processing training with Friends International
Club Livelihood Program.
Laguna Achievers Worker’s Association was
first to undergo the said training welcoming the
month of August with a Livelihood activity for its
members. “The training is relevant for all OFWs
planning to go home for good. This will help
us in the future as we are now starting to draw
plans for our LAWA Foundation to be launch on
2013.” Menardo Reyes, LAWA President said.
Nineteen LAWA members attended the Meat
Processing hands- on training on 1 August 2010 lead by its VicePresident Florceta “Poloy” Calderon. Members were able to experience
the preparation of Sweet Ham, Longganisa de Iloilo, Pure Corned Beef,
Chicken Tocino and Bacon Deluxe.
On 08 August 2010, Laoag (San Agustin, Isabela) Association hosted
the same training with forty- one attendees. After the event, Laoag
Association President Dante Domingo immediately gave Certificate of
Attendance to all the attendees. “Everyone’s looking forward on this
kind of training. We in our association are planning to have a cooperative
in our barangay and this is a big help for us”, according Domingo.
will make it. I made samples of what I learnt during the training and
my friends like it. I believe taste matters on meat processing and I got
it,” Teofila said.
Third to host the training on Meat Processing is
the Alcaleneaeans Migrants Association Hong
Kong lead by its President Remedios Fajardo
on 22 August 2010. She echoed the same goal
with the other two leaders. “I wish OFWS will
find time to learn knowledge like this to prepare
for our eventual homecoming. This is important
to all of us that they should consider spending
time rather than doing nothing on Sunday’s,”
Fajardo appealed.
The training was tailored made for OFWS busy Sunday. A lot of them
wanted to learn but they do not want to keep coming to learn. The
questions of time/ schedule always come first when they inquire.
Techniques and practical tips on meat processing were taught during
the training for trainees’ easy understanding of the business.
He added, he wanted his members to participate more on other
Livelihood trainings to be able for them to have an idea on what kind
of business they can pursue in the future when they return home. One
example of this is training attendee Teofila Fe de la Cruz, she will be
home for good in Bulacan on 05 September 2010. “My sister told me
that many is doing the same business in our place but I am confident I

HERO OR LOSER?
Dear Bro. Rolly,
Due to financial difficulty, my husband and I agreed
that I should leave and work abroad because we only
rely in our small restaurant as our source of income.
I was scared a bit that our restaurant business might
suffer too because I am the real cook and my husband
is just assisting me in the kitchen.
And so in March, 2010 before leaving for Hong
Kong we both decided to sell our restaurant and used
the proceeds for my agency placement fee and the rest
was used to purchase two units of tricycle which my
husband decided to manage.
I was hired by a Chinese family as a domestic helper
and part of my domestic duties is cooking. As a
cook myself I was confident that I will get a good
mark from my employer. The first month was a
bit difficult because I need to get used to Chinese
cooking which I find more complicated than doing
Filipino dishes. Towards the end of May, I knew
I have become a good cook as I learned more of the
intricacies of Chinese cooking.
Beginning June, however I started to hear mixed
complaints from my employer that sometimes
the food is sweet, or salty or the steamed fish was
overcooked, etc.
I felt it is an insult to my proficiency being a
restaurant owner myself and a good cook. I suspect
that my lady employer is just insecured or probably
looking for a reason to humiliate me.
As I couldn’t stand it any more I am planning to
transfer to a new employer even as it will require that
I should return first to the Philippines before I start
a new contract.
I will appreciate your advice.
Joy “Kusinera”, D. Bay
Dear Joy,
Your case is similar to other OFWs who, in
their desire to work abroad for better pay
and opportunities, sell their treasured
possessions or properties to pay off
placement fees, not to mention the
sacrifice of being away from their families
and loved ones. And that’s what makes
the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) the
NEW HEROS or mga BAGONG BAYANI.
The OFW as she leaves the country carries
with her the hope of the entire family for
a better life.
But suddenly a victorious HERO becomes
10
a LOSER and with her downfall the hope
of the family vanishes.
One of the worst things that could
happen to an OFW who have worked
only a few months and spending huge
some of money to get to Hong Kong is to
be terminated from work prematurely.
One of the reasons for premature
termination is the OFW’s job performance
and work attitude.
While you may be a GOOD cook as
you claimed, there is always a room to
improve your cooking abilities. The worst
judge may be ourselves – and so the basic
rule is let others judge your work and not
yourself.
and so I told my Filipino friend who is working
opposite our flat about what is happening in my
employer’s house.
I did not know that my “supposed friend” is a traitor
because she also told her lady employer what I told
her about what is happening in our flat.
I learned later on that her and my employers are first
cousins. My employer scolded me because her cousin
told her about my gossiping to my Filipino friend
about what is happening in her flat. I was warned
I will be terminated from work if I will repeat the
same mistake.
I am writing so that you can publish in your column
that you just cannot trust anybody even if she is your
friend because she can be a traitor at your back.
A lot of employees are forgetting the
three (3) degrees of efficiency in a job
performance – GOOD, BETTER and BEST.
While you may be a GOOD cook, do not
forget that you can become a BETTER
cook. And if you can become the BEST
cook – premature termination is far from
happening and may just be a thing of the
past.
The matter of trusting a friend as per
your letter is of lesser importance to me
and is not worth publishing at all. You
missed the most important point - the
seriousness of your offence as a domestic
helper (DH) which must be seriously
presented and published here to serve as
a warning to other DH.
And so my advice to you and to all
employees – do your BEST in any kind
of job you are doing and you cannot go
wrong.
Bro. Rolly
SANCTITY OF THE HOUSE
Dear Bro. Rolly,
I arrived Hong Kong two weeks before Christmas
in 2009. I am employed as a domestic helper by a
Chinese couple with two young children.
During the first two months of my employment,
I noticed right away that my employers are not in
good terms. They always screamed at each other
and at times my male employer would not sleep at
home.
I notice too that my lady employer is a nagger and
is probably the reason why her husband prefers to
come home late.
The children always complain too about the lack of
attention from their parents.
Monina, Llama Is.
Dear Monina,
The moment a DH is admitted in the house
of her employer as a worker, she becomes,
whether she likes it or not, a member of
the household. In effect she becomes a
member of the family. She is placed in a
position where she becomes privy to all
the things happening in the household.
She gets to know the family’s secrets,
problems and other private things.
These private matters of the family
must be treated with care and utmost
confidentiality by the all-knowing helper
and should never leave the confine of the
house.
The domestic helper must respect the
SANCTITY of her employer’s house, not
forgetting that she is an adopted member

Mahiwaga ang Buhay ng Tao
About
4
years
ago meron akong
nakilalang
who know L considers her to be the the richest
Filipino in New Zealand. Na-invite kami sa
birthday niya sa Whangarei which is about
2 hours North of Auckland. Hanep sa laki
ang bahay niya sa Whangarei. Nasa taas ng
isang hill. Wala kang makikitang kapit-bahay.
Whangarei. Meron pa siyang farm ng hindi ko
matandaan kung ilang daang baka meron. Isa
lang yon sa kanyang mga businesses. In fact,
parang hobby lang niya yon. Ang major source
of income niya galing sa airline insurance at
hotel business. Aside from a house in NZ,
Canada at Cook Islands.
What is truly remarkable was how she became
rich in the first place. For she was once but
a DH in Hongkong. Eto ang kwento niya.
Sa HK may nanligaw sa kanyang isang
matandang biyudo na Kiwi (New Zealander).
Nagkagustuhan sila and to make the story
short nagpakasal.
business.
Then after a few years, na-diagnose yung
Kiwi na may tumor, cancer sa brain. Natigil
bills. Hindi pumayag ang Kiwi pero di nito
pinagtapat kung bakit. Inilagan ni L ang Kiwi
hanggang sa kanyang mga huling sandali and
without knowing that her husband was very
rich.
Then parang Hollywood movie, nung basahin
ng abogado ng Kiwi ang kanyang last will and

She was driving an ordinary Toyota Previa.
Her house in Whangarei which she inherited
from her husband is a mansion, but had no
extravagant furnishings. Kapag pumupunta
Parang yung
eksena sa “Pretty Woman” ni Julia Roberts.
Kasi pinupuno niya ang trolley niya ng
mga mamahaling goods. The manager who
obviously didn’t know her rudely asked her
kung kaya niyang bayaran lahat. So L took
the store manager to the nearby bank and
introduced him to the bank manager. The
bank manager told the store manager that if L
wanted, she could buy the whole department
store chain!

Some call it karma, that good things happen
to good people. Some call it destiny, guhit ng

we have control of our future? Or is the future
pre-determined? Is there really such a thing as
destiny? Here’s what my favorite TV series has

We are sharing in the deep anguish and pain of
The families of the victims of the Bus Hostage in Manila.
The tragedy is senseless and uncalled for.
Our words are but small gesture of our sympathies
And can do little to ease your pain.
Our silent tears, bereaved thoughts and deep regret and apologies
On the unnecessary loss cannot be adequately expressed.
Lives meant to be shared in joy and peace now shattered.
The blow is hard and the shock severe in
The abrupt parting of your love ones.
So sudden the cloud of sorrow fell, the faces gone, the speech fades
But never too far in thoughts they can be reached.
Memory forever recalls people dearly loved and cherished.
‎We all bond in your grief and sorrow.
We share your many whys, how and what now questions
Tied with myriad monochrome of ghastly emotions.
Death seems so final yet the living goes on.
But
Take heed!
Sunbeams will soon come and murkiness will pass,
And love’s remembrance outlasts.

The Reasons of Jesus Coming to the World
by Apostle Renato D. Carillo / ORAS NG HIMALA staff
1. TO SAVE
SINNERS
Here is a trustworthy
saying that deserves full
acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to
save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
1 Timothy 1:15
2. TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come
to this house, because this man, too, is a son of
Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and
to save what was lost.
Luke 19:9-10
3. TO HEAL THE SICK
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our
sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God,
smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced
for our transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace
was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:4-5
4. TO REDEEM US FROM THE CURSE
OF THE LAW
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed
is everyone who is hung on a tree.
Galatians 3:13
5. TO MAKE US RIGHTEOUS BEFORE
GOD
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so
that in him we might become the righteousness of
God.
2 Corinthians 5:21
6. TO GIVE US LIFE AND AN
ABUNDANT LIFE.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I
have come that they may have life, and have it to
the full.
John 10:10
7. TO GIVE US PEACE.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do
not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
8. TO MAKE US SONS OF GOD.
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed
in his name, he gave the right to become children
of God-children born not of natural descent, nor
of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of
God.John 1:12-13 9. TO MAKE US VICTORIOUS.
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in
triumphant procession in Christ and through us
spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge
of him.
2 Corinthians 2:14
How will I ever experience all these reasons
of Jesus’ coming to the world?
1. GIVE YOUR LIFE TO JESUS.
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No
branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the
vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain
in me.
John 15:4
16
2. REPENT FROM ALL YOURS SINS.
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins
may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may
come from the Lord.
Acts 3:19
3. ACCEPT JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR
LORD, HEALER & SAVIOUR OF YOUR
LIFE.
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is
Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised
him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9
4. OBEY HIS COMMANDS OR HIS
WORD.
If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15
5. ATTEND REGULAR SERVICES.
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are
in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one
another—and all the more as you see the Day
approaching.
Hebrews 10:25
“Yes, it is as you say”, Jesus replied. “But I say
to all of you; In the future you will see the Son
of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty
One and coming on the clouds of heaven”.
Matthew 26: 64
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the
angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that
time will come. It’s like a man going away: He
leaves his house and puts his servants in charge,
each with his house and puts his servants in charge,
each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the
door to keep watch. Therefore keep watch because
you do not know when the owner of the house will
come back- whether in the evening, or at midnight
or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes
suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I
say to you, I say to everyone,Watch!
Mark 13: 32: 37
RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST TODAY,
please pray this prayer…
“Father God, I don’t want to go to hell, I want to
meet Jesus in the clouds at His coming and I want
to enter heaven. I realized that I am a sinner, that
I cannot save myself. I need a Savior right now.
I humble myself to you and confess all my sins
I’ve committed. Please forgive me for all my sins
and also the sins of my forefathers. Forgive me for
worshipping, bowing, praying, and asking help
from idols and carved images. It was wrong and it
is a great sin against you. Forgive me for gambling,
smoking, committing adultery, fornication, telling
lies, deceiving people, taking prohibited drugs.
Forgive me for negative thoughts, words and deeds.
Forgive me for watching pornographic posters and
magazines. Forgive me for getting counterfeit power
from satan through hypnotism, witchcraft, sorcery,
black magic. Forgive me for hatred, resentment,
self-pity, envy, jealousy, bitterness, loneliness,
weariness and pride. Forgive me Father and my
ancestors for worshipping to idols and carved
images. I now forgive those who sinned against me,
including my parents, brothers, sisters, relatives and
even myself. I want to be changed.
Lord Jesus, I now give my life to you. I accept you
as my Lord, my Savior and my Healer. Come
into my life and reign into my heart. Thank you
Lord Jesus for what you have done at the cross
of Calvary for me, for my family and for the
world. I love you and I will obey you. I will never
disappoint you. Amen.

The Lord Jesus loves to display his awesome
power by healing all kinds of sicknesses and
diseases. He is the same yesterday, today and
forever!
The following are among those recent mighty
healing testimonies of God through the life of
the Man of God, Apostle Renato D. Carillo:
•
A woman who suffered from 9-year
cancer of ovary was gloriously healed!
As she squeezed her tummy, she gladly
reported that she could no longer feel the
pain! Hallelujah!
•
An elderly woman who had a terrible
body pain was healed. She was slain in
the Spirit even if the Man of God didn’t
touch her. According to her, she couldn’t
move her arms and legs nor stand for
so long but by God’s healing touch, she
can now do what she couldn’t do before.
Praise God!
•
A man who was a victim of witchcraft
was freed by God. He reported that
worms used to come out from his ears,
but through the healing power of God,
he was set free. He was also healed from
blurred eyesight. Glory to God!
•
Another man experienced God’s amazing
power. He suffered from terrible kidney
problem and was healed. He thanked God
for the miracle.

Filipino domestic workers join HK people’s grief and protest
Vigil with local HK people highlights “day of sympathy, reflection, solidarity and justice”
“This is the first Sunday we’ve been out after
the August 23 bloodbath. We dedicate this
day to show our sympathy to the victims of
the tragedy, to reflect on how and why such
happens in Philippine society, and to show
our solidarity with the people of Hong Kong in
calling for justice.”
This was expressed today by Eman Villanueva of
the Filipino Migrant Workers’ Union (FMWU),
as the group took the occasion of its 12th
anniversary program to hold a public program
dedicated to the victims of the tragic Manila
hostage-taking and to condemn what they call
as a “state of disrespect to life and human
rights” by the Philippine government and its
armed forces.
The peak of the whole day event was the
People’s Vigil for Solidarity and Justice attended
by OFWs and local HK people including
legislators, employers, students, workers and
the religious. Earlier in the day, an All-Filipino
Interfaith Prayer Offering that gathered church
leaders in an hour of prayers and a Public
Speakout and Forum, where OFWs were able
to express their views on the tragedy, were also
held.
The two-hour vigil and candle-lighting was
jointly organized with local groups including
the Justice and Peace Commission of the
HK Catholic Diocese (HKJP), HK Catholic
Commission for Labour Affairs (HKCCLA), Hong
Kong Christian Council (HKCC), Association for
the Advancement of Feminism (AAF), AsiaPacific Students and Youth Association (ASA)
and World Student Christian Federation - Asia
Pacific (WSCF-AP). Filipino groups like BAYANHK and GABRIELA-HK also led the event.
Protesters from the rally organized by Hong
Kong political parties earlier in the day also
joined in the vigil. The vigil culminated in a
symbolic signing of messages of those who
attended in a giant tarpaulin bearing the call for
justice.
“It is our condolence and sympathy that
we want to convey. It is the deeper and
systemic problems within the police and the
government in the Philippines that we want
to expose. It is our solidarity that we want to
show and the call for justice we share with the
Hong Kong people that we want to echo,” said
Villanueva.
Dolores Balladares, chairperson of the United
Filipinos in Hong Kong (UNIFIL-MIGRANTE-HK),
said that the botched rescue that saw eight
people dead and scores more gravely injured,
showed a clear disregard to making the lives of
the hostages a topmost priority. She said that
“the low regard for life and the safety and
protection of civilians is a mark of the armed
institutions of the government.”
According to her, such conduct is deeply
ingrained in the orientation, training and
operation of the police and the whole armed
forces. “They are not based or directed by
respect to human rights such as the right to
life or due process and so wantonly conduct
actions without any consideration to its
outcome. Thus, an operation that should have
saved lives ended up in the killing of almost
half of the innocent hostages,” she stated.
Balladares said that “the competence of the
police and the Philippine armed forces is not
on saving and protecting people’s lives and
rights but on ending and violating them.” This
she said is shown by the spotty human rights
record of the Philippine police and armed
forces that is mired with cases of corruption,
involvement in organized crimes, torture of
suspected criminals as well as extrajudicial
killing, illegal arrest and enforced disappearance
of activists and human rights defenders.
This sentiment was also echoed by Axel
Pinpin, secretary-general of the peasant group
KASAMA-TK in Southern Tagalog who was in
Hong Kong for a visit and who also offered
poems for the victims of the tragedy and
human rights abuses in the Philippines.
“The same police unit – the Manila Police
friends International Magazine SEPTEMBER 2010
District – who conducted the whole rescue
operation was also the same unit who
violently dispersed the peaceful action of
farmers in July 3 this year for genuine agrarian
reform. It just showed that when it comes
to saving lives and respecting human rights,
they are incompetent. But when it is about
fascism and repression, they can do it with
flying colors and even with eyes closed,” Pinpin
stated.
Finally, Balladares said that the show of
solidarity between OFW groups and the HK
people on the day’s events will continue as they
monitor the investigations being conducted
on the tragic hostage-taking as well as the
reported backlash on Filipino migrants in Hong
Kong.
“There have been reports of unfortunate
reactions by a few Hong Kong people against
Filipino migrants such as arbitrary termination
of contracts and some cases of verbal
harassment. We shall together stand guard
against these.
But we do believe that the concern of the
overwhelming majority of HK people is
more on making sure that the Philippine
government and officials take responsibility
and accountability to what happened to
their compatriots. Our call is the same for
Filipinos who have also been victimized by the
human rights violations stemming from the
very policies of the government. The culture
of impunity in the Philippines must end,”
Balladares concluded.#

Winner, not Whiner
by Bishop. Eddie Villanueva
In the devotional Day by Day by Charles
Swindoll, the respected pastor and founder of
Insight for Living recounted his conversation
with a businessman.
“How does a person get wisdom? I realize we are to be men of wisdom,
but few people ever talk about how it is acquired,” Pastor Swindoll asked
his companion this question when the subject of wisdom kept on popping
up in their discussion.
“Pain” was the quick and to-the-point answer he got from the man.
Based on our own unpredictable life experiences, I believe that we can all
but agree with him.
*****
Pain is not new to us. It touches our lives regardless of who we are, who we
know, what we have, what we know. To some extent, pain is considerably
a phenomenal life equalizer. For while forms and degrees may differ, rich
and poor both get acquainted with it just the same.
However, while it is true that we all know pain, not all of us know how to
respond rightly to it. Now, this is where the delineation line separates the
winners from the whiners. Whereas there are those who gather strength
out of their pains, there are also those who just wallow in them. Clearly,
therefore, our response to pain determines whether we swim or sink in
the river of our desperate situation.
*****
Let us consider the whiners first.
A whiner is a person who is given to excessive complaints and crying and
whining. In simple terms, a whiner is a constant complainer.
I believe we don’t have to look far to see a whiner. Most possibly, we turn
into one, wittingly or unwittingly, when we feel like we have reached the
end of our rope or the whole world is against us.
Constant complaining, however, does us no good; it produces in us nothing
but pessimism. Consider this: Negative confessions only reinforce negative
thoughts that foster negative feelings, which sooner or later, only lead to
negative actions.
The psalmist probably knew too well the ill-effects of whining and
complaining that he earnestly prayed, “May the words of my mouth and
the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my Rock and my
Redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).
Caught between a rock and a hard place, so to speak, we can choose to do
more than curse our difficult situation. Instead of whining, we can choose
to come out of our bad experience as better individuals. How do we do
this?
Let us consider the winners now.
*****
William Arthur Ward, said to be one of America’s most quoted writer of
inspirational maxims, gave a powerful illustration of a winner. To him,
“The experienced mountain climber is not intimidated by a mountain – he
is inspired by it. The persistent winner is not discouraged by a problem – he
is challenged by it. Mountains are created to be conquered; adversities are
designed to be defeated; problems are sent to be solved…”
20
A winner, therefore, is a person who is objective in his appreciation of
his situation, informed in his approach to a problem, and positive in his
response to life.
An objective appreciation of our situation makes us look at our problems,
including the toughest ones, with the eyes of faith. Instead of further
complicating matters by our negative imaginings, we look forward to the
beautiful end result of our every situation because God is able to make all
things work together for our good (Romans 8:28).

The ISS HOPE Center Hong Kong led by its Chief Executive Mr. Stephen Yau, Director

2010. The message signing and prayer offering was held at the Southorn Playground in Wan

Also present in the said prayer offering is the Consul General of the Philippine Consulate in

research by Bernadeth M. Benitez
When we truly understand that the plan of God for our lives is to prosper
us and not to harm us (Jeremiah 29:11), we are empowered to approach
our problems with the confidence that there is hope even in the midst of
life’s seeming impossibility. Because nothing is too difficult for Him to do
(Luke 1:37).
James 1:2-4 counsels us, “My brothers and sisters, when you have many
kinds of troubles, you should be full of joy, because you know that these
troubles test your faith, and this will give you patience. Let your patience
show itself perfectly in what you do. Then you will be perfect and complete
and will have everything you need.”
James’ words lead us back on the right track. Pains, troubles, and tests
in life are meant to produce in us patience, maturity, and wisdom. If we
respond correctly to the tests of our faith, “we will be perfect and complete
and will have everything you need.”
Now, that is the winner’s life in its fullness. God bless you!
Most of us OFWs need our mobile phone
because it is very important for us for our
communication with our family back home
in the Philippines and friends to relieve
our homesickness and ease our boredom.
However, we should know that proper using/
holding our mobile phone is important for us
to know.
I read from one of the book/newspaper that
constantly cradling a telephone receiver
between the shoulder and ear to free the hands
for other work can lead to stroke. Stroke causes
due to the injury of the blood vessel in the neck
have been reported once every three times a
month at Prince of Wales Hospital for the past
three years with the average age victims of 47
years old and mostly men.
Research by the Department of Medicine and
Therapeutic and the SHHU Cardiovascular
Disease and Smoke Center of the Chinese
University of Hong Kong shows carotid and
vertebral arteries are susceptible to injury as
they are not fully protected by the skeletal
structure.
Overextending the neck, the research showed
can compress or tear the mobile segments
of the arteries comprising the flow of blood
to the brain resulting in scheme stroke. The
common symptoms include sudden hemiparesis or hemi-sensory impairment, dizziness
and vertigo and vomiting and unsteady gait.

In behalf of UMELA, I would like to
congratulate our Officers/Members and all
the Graduates for having been very patient
and supportive to our association’s goal &
mission. Time flies so fast, it’s our 2nd yr
ANNIVERSARY since the UMELA was
organized. Our group initiated this kind of
activity with a good cause, we dedicate our
volunteering service to our fellow OFWs &
we had worked for charity in the past, we are
doing it now and we intend to do so as long as
UMELA exists.
It is our pleasure to welcome those who have
not joined our association yet. At UMELA
we are sure that you will soon feel sense of
pride and will take advantage of many benefits
which our association provides the overseas
workers here in HK.
I warmly encourage you to become actively
involved. Prepare for your future ahead. For
me, it is better to teach our members how to catch
fish than to give fish once only.
I am so proud to introduce our livelihood
training program like: RIBBON FOLDING,
BEADS CRAFTING, BASIC BAKING
and most of all our MEAT PROCESSING.
Because according to Department of Trade
and Industry MEAT PROCESSING is
the most sustainable livelihood which only
requires a small capital.
The increasing demand for processed food
will provide business opportunities for small
income families. I would like to cite my
daughter in-law as an example who used to
sell fish ball and quikiam just in front of their
house while taking care of her family at the
same time & she said it helped a lot for their
daily necessities. So now I encourage you
to prepare yourself, venture into a business,
prioritize your FAMILY, join them in the near
future. Don’t forget to seek help from GOD.

pawang mababait at behave kapag nasa set.
kanya.
make up niya.
laging ganitong make up.
ang comedy show
cast.
Samantala, dahil dalawa ngayon ang kanyang comedy show, bukod
Sunday. Gusto ko munang magkaroon ng relaxation. Kasi, three
times a week ang taping ng soap. “Kapag nakapagpapahinga ako ay
naaalagaan ko ang beauty ko., he he he!”
Kasi, due to insistent
Dr. Camille Garcia at Fr Albert Mecaydor.
Saka, wala
doon si Rudy Hatfield. Talagang wala na kaming communication. Tahimik na siya.”
Pacquiao, magti-taping ng
Show Me Da Manny sa US
Manny, may special day ang taping niya.
Ilan show na
show.

Richard Gutierrez,
nakipaghiwalay na
kay Jewel, ipinalit si
Solenn ng Survivor
Philippines Season 3
MADALING nakalimutan ni Richard Gutierrez
ang kanyang ex-gf na si Jewel Mische. Kasi raw
Di ba mestisa sina Jewel at Anne Curtis at isa
Richard noon? Crush kasi ni Richard ang mga
mestisa at matatalinong babae.
Buboy na-dengue at naging
1. Nalink din si Mark kay Katrina.
Glaiza de Castro, di pa in love kay Felix Roco
may Party Pilipinas at Laf and Roll pang programa si Glaiza.
tinutulungan ngayon.

naipadama.

TRUE FRIENDSHIP
by Cristine Buban dedicated to my beloved sister Ms.
Judith Calubad
True friends are for life
Until the end
They’re more than special
They’re your bestest friends.
They’re the ones you can go to
When you’re in despair
The ones that’ll help you
Even when you got gum in your hair!
They’re the ones who’ll laugh
And go laughing with you all through the night
The ones who’ll help you
Help you with all their might
To have a good friend
You have to be one
So be nice to one another
So you can be friends forever
And that\’s how to be the best friend you can be.

Laugh Lines . . .
PEDRO
It was the first day of school and a new student
named Pedro Martinez, the son of a Mexican
restaurateur,entered the fourth grade.
The teacher said, “Let’s begin by reviewing
some American history. Who said ‘Give me
Liberty, or give me Death?’
She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Pedro,
who had his hand up. Patrick Henry, 1775.
“Very good!” apprised the teacher. “Now,
who said, “Government of the people, by the
people, for the people, shall not perish from the
earth?”
Again, no response except from Pedro:
“Abraham Lincoln, 1863.”
The teacher snapped at the class, “Class, you
should be ashamed! Pedro, who is new to our
country, knows more about its history than
you do!”
She heard a loud whisper: “Screw the
Mexicans!” “Who said that?” she demanded.
Pedro put his hand up. “Jim Bowie, 1836.”
At that point, a student in the back said, “I’m
gonna puke.” The teacher glared and asked,
“All right! Now, who said that?” Again, Pedro
answered, “George Bush to the Japanese
Prime Minister, 1991.”
Now furious, another student yelled, “Oh
yeah? Suck this!” Pedro jumped out of his
chair waving his hand and shouting to the
teacher, “Bill Clinton to Monica Lewinsky,
1997!”
Now, with almost a mob hysteria, teacher said,
“You little shit. If you say anything else, I’ll
kill you!” Pedro frantically yelled at the top
of his voice, “Gary Condit to Chandra Levy,
2001.”
The teacher fainted, and as the class gathered
around her on the floor, someone said, “Oh
shit, we’re in BIG trouble now!” Pedro
whispered, “Saddam Hussein, 2003.”

• OPM Love Songs Medley
Before the medley, each contestant was given
time to perform his/her individual piece. To
round up their slot, the group performed their
assigned medley to the delight of judges and
audiences, with Superstar Search Musical
Director Nobel Gabasan on keyboards.
PrimeCredit and Prime Gold are proud of the

process with Nobel Gabasan wherein each of
