E-Reserves creating persistent URL links @ DOROTHY H. HOOVER LIBRARY This guide is intended to help teaching faculty to create links to full text articles from licensed OCAD University databases. Note that most license agreements permit instructors to link to articles as long as there is a proxy prefix added to the stable URL address; this combination allows students to access individual articles from off campus. If you need any assistance in constructing persistent links to content you have located in any of the library databases, please contact Topher Elliott (telliott@ocadu.ca). Provide us with the bibliographic citation as well as the database name. Library staff will ensure that the link is valid for both on and off campus access. The modified URL can be cut and pasted into a word document and embedded in the citations added to the bibliography of readings accompanying a syllabus. If configured in this manner, once a student logs into MyCourses, there will be no need to log in again to access the full text article. Note that all databases with full text articles (in HTML or PDF formats) generally do not allow instructors to download copies for posting on a course management site such as Canvas, so it is important to use the modified URL structure described below. See Reserves Print or Electronic guide more information. If the bibliography is not loaded on MyCourses, but sent via email or other means, students will be prompted to log in using the standard OCAD University username/password To Create URL The below procedure works for most databases except those using DOI standards, or Direct Object Identifiers (for ex. Wiley Online Library); see p. 6 of this handout for procedures to link a DOI using the proxy prefix. 1. access stable URL (or permanent link, permalink, persistent URL, stable link) example: http://jph.sagepub.com/content/9/4/203 2. add proxy prefix before the URL with no spaces between the two proxy prefix example http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url= combined URL example; note: there is no space between Proxy prefix and permanent URL link there are two occurrences of the protocol (http://...) http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url=http://jph.sagepub.com/content/9/4/203 proxy prefix stable URL for full text article To Find Stable URLs Many databases use different procedures, but the examples below highlight the most frequently used protocols Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) Art Full Text (EBSCO) 1. access article record 2. click Permalink 3. cut and paste URL that appears in window 1. access article record 2. click Permalink 3. cut and paste URL that appears in window CPIQ (Canadian Periodical Index Quarterly) 1. access article record 2. scroll down to bottom of record 3. cut and paste Document URL CBCA (Canadian Business and Current Affairs) 1. access article record 2. scroll down to bottom of record 3. cut and paste Document URL NOTE: OCAD U proxy prefix is automatically added to URL JSTOR 1. access article record 2. cut and paste Article Stable URL Note: PDF version is accessible Project Muse 1. access article Summary 2. cut and paste URL from summary page DOI format URLs ACM Digital Library ACM uses Direct Object Identifiers (DOI): use the following for all DOI addresses: 1. go to article record 2. cut and paste DOI number only 3. between proxy prefix and DOI add the following: http://dx.doi.org/ example: http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1243441.1243472 proxy prefix required URL DOI SAGE Journals Online 1. access Full Text (PDF) 2. cut and paste DOI number only 3. between proxy prefix and DOI add the following: http://dx.doi.org/ example: http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0169796X0802400304 proxy prefix required URL DOI Non-Standard DOIs Wiley Online 1 cut and paste DOI number only from results page; eg. 10.1111/1467-8330.00237 add to theofend of DOI: eg. Wiley Online uses DOI (digital object identifier)2 but the/pdf method constructing the 10.1111/1467-8330.00237/pdf 3 before the DOI number insert the following: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/; eg. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.11 11/1467-8330.00237/pdf 4 Insert the proxy prefix in front of URL example: http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url=http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1467-8330.00237/pdf proxy prefix required Wiley URL DOI /pdf To Find Stable URLs for E-Book Chapters 1. click book title 2. cut and paste URL from Table of Contents page 3. find start page of the chapter using: table of contents OR paging through to find table of contents in the full text version EBRARY Example: 4. add page number to URL by using first number from brackets example (103 of 329) use 103 5. add &page=103 to end of URL example: http://ezproxy-library.ocad.ca/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1243441.1243472&page=103 book URL chapter page SCHOLARS PORTAL BOOKS 1. locate book 2. use table of contents to access chapter 3. cut and paste URL browser display BETA TESTING ALWAYS test the link from on-campus to verify that it works ALWAYS test the link from off-campus in order to ensure that students can access the link from off-campus. If you need any assistance in constructing persistent links to content you have located in any of the library databases, please contact Daniel Payne ext. 217 (dpayne@ocadu.ca). Provide us with the bibliographic citation as well as the database name. Library staff will ensure that the link is valid for both on and off campus access.
