Academic
Programs
Our academic programs have been designed to provide a unique
learning experience, complemented with the necessary skills,
knowledge and development to better prepare students for
an increasingly demanding job market.
Success in the global century is defined as the ability to implement
solutions and obtain results at an international level, without
losing a local focus. Nova’s academic programs achieve this by
delivering on five pillars of learning:
1
2
3
4
5
KNOWLEDGE
Nova’s academic programs are structured in such a way as to develop academic rigor and knowledge in the fields of Economics, Finance and Management, assuring constant contact with the business world. Our intellectual environment attracts and stimulates the best faculty and students.
ATTITUDE
Our students are equipped not only with the best analytical skills but also
with an open mind. They want to develop their emotional, relational and
social intelligence to their full potential, all of which are key to professional
and personal fulfillment.
SKILLS
Soft skills are just as important as analytical skills. The school encourages
its students to broaden their perspectives on ethical and environmental
issues, while producing a stimulating, creative and innovative learning
context.
PRACTICE
Nova offers a practical focus on exploring real business challenges with real
companies. Designed to address market demands, the school’s innovative
learning processes blend in-class and in-company formats, underlining the
importance of learning by doing.
INTERNATIONAL
We address the differences and identities of those who study at Nova School
of Business and Economics. In today’s world, leaders must understand
and manage diversity if they are to maximize the human potential
within their organizations. Our students are challenged to take part
in several study trips, where they are confronted with the strategies
and working environment of global organizations.
UNDERGRADUATE
MASTERS
The undergraduate degree is founded on a selection of core
courses that offer a comprehensive education in Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods. This enables
students to acquire a balanced foundation in technical and
scientific knowledge. Students also receive a general education in related areas, such as Law and Social Sciences.
The Masters portfolio is designed to build the skills and
competencies that will make the difference in the professional marketplace. The ability to dissect and solve complex
problems and build on extensive acquired knowledge are
placed at the core of the learning experience.
We believe in the success of our graduates in adapting to
diverse professional situations. For this, we place special
emphasis on developing students’ analytical capabilities but
also on their communications skills and ability to work in
teams through coursework and modules. These soft skills
courses challenge students to participate in voluntary projects and/or to organize events within the community.
INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE IS ALSO KEY
Nova School of Business and Economics has developed
over 150 exchange agreements with top business schools
all over the world. Under these agreements, students can
spend one semester attending courses abroad, with the
credits obtained then attributed to their program at Nova
School of Business and Economics.
The course structure encompasses Nova SBE academic rigor
and knowledge in the fields of Economics, Finance and Management, assuring constant contact with the business world.
Our programs also differentiate themselves through the development of critical soft skills in areas like creativity and innovation, multicultural and international exposure, social and
individual responsibility. All this takes place within the context
of a unique human and social experience with the support of
highly dedicated staff.
MASTERS IN ECONOMICS
Aimed at students with a strong quantitative background,
this program combines the rigorous analysis of social and
economic problems with a hands-on approach, applying
state-of-the-art theoretical and empirical techniques to real-life policy issues.
MASTERS IN FINANCE
PH.D.
The Ph.D. programs at Nova SBE train highly qualified independent researchers in the fields of Economics, Finance and
Management. Our graduates pursue careers in international
academia and research institutions. They also hold top positions in companies, financial institutions and governmental
organizations.
The focus of the Ph.D. program is to endow our students with
the state-of-the-art of both theoretical and empirical tools
that will enable them to advance the frontier of research and
provide evidence-based policy or business recommendations.
Aimed at developing analytical and problem-solving competencies in Finance. Throughout this program students benefit from first-hand contact with financial institutions, work
with real world cases and become prepared for demanding
careers in Finance.
MASTERS IN MANAGEMENT
Aimed at students from any graduate background wishing
to gain a general management education. The program focuses on both contemporary and pervasive issues, such as
product innovation, entrepreneurship, globalization, sustainability and ethics.
International Experience
Nova’s Masters provide students with strong international

One of the school’s main concerns is to minimize the gap
between academic life and a professional career. The Field
Labs are courses that are closely connected to the corporate
world, challenging students with a hands-on experience
– students are actually immersed into real-life problemsolving projects, in which they are coached by professionals
and faculty.
Nova School of Business and Economics organizes an annual
on-campus job fair hosting over 50 leading organizations all
present to recruit from our diverse, top quality students.
With more than 1500 students attending the Business

EXECUTIVE
EDUCATION
For the past 20 years, Nova School of Business
and Economics has provided world-class Executive
Education for organizations and executives
in Portugal and internationally.
Our
Programs
The Nova Executive Education offer includes open enrollment
management programs and corporate learning programs
developed specifically in collaboration with selected leading
organizations:
OPEN ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT
PROGRAMS
CORPORATE LEARNING PROGRAMS
In today’s rapidly changing competitive environment, executives must be adept at moving quickly out of their comfort
zone to acquire new leadership skills. Our general management programs aim to develop these skills for the following
three populations:
Talent is a key driver of organizational success.
• Young, high-potential managers, who are looking to accelerate their career by connecting more clearly to corporate
strategy and objectives
• Experienced managers, or those planning to set up their
own companies, who require broad-based management
skills to enable them to take on wider-reaching management responsibilities
• High-level, experienced executives who require advanced
knowledge of value drivers and strategic implementation
in order to compete at the very top
In addition to our general management programs, we offer
short-course, skills-based programs to support executives
from a variety of functional areas. These highly-intensive
programs are delivered over two or three days, and focus on
skills such as Negotiation, Leadership, Planning and Finance.
Nova Executive Education has a long track record of partnering with companies to develop their talent through organizational and personal development programs. Our Corporate
Learning Programs are based on a clear notion of partnership, where we seek to support the talent management and
development teams in building sustainable and measurable
programs to meet the demands of the specific business
problem, as well as the client’s resource constraints.
Because each business problem is unique, the programs
vary in their degree of customization, from “blank sheet”
projects involving root-and-branch strategic restructuring and highly-tailored content and delivery mechanisms,
through to semi-customized projects which aim to adapt
modular content to the specific circumstances of the participants.
In addition to supporting our clients’ drive to develop their
talent and support their strategic objectives, we see our Corporate Learning Programs as a vital bridge between faculty
research and “real world” scenarios.
Our
International Reach
Nova Executive Education is currently present in Angola,
Brazil, Mozambique and Portugal, extending the international scope of our training to the Portuguese speaking world.
By spearheading Nova’s geographical expansion into the
Portuguese-speaking economies, Nova Executive Education

both for those wishing to do business in the Portuguesespeaking economies and for executives in fast-developing
Portuguese-speaking economies wishing to accelerate their
careers and performance.
Our

develop programs and content in sector-specific
or geography-specific areas.
HEALTHCARE

Nova Executive Education runs a
yearly program for Senior Executives
in Healthcare, aimed at improving
management and leadership skills in
a sector that currently represents between 8-12% of Portugal’s GDP.

family and the organization, harming
strategy, governance and, ultimately,
profitability. The Nova Family Business Initiative implements a series

Business Day, to the Managing the
Family Business Executive Education
program.
Given the international reach and
experience of Nova Executive Education, we currently offer several programs on Doing Business in Europe,
