Bob Towers Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Saturday, May 15th
PICTURED HERE: A heartfelt introduction from Steve Kass (Oceanside Chamber
of Commerce Recording Secretary) to Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Bob
Towers. Presentation by President Gail Carlin of a ship’s wheel clock, representing
the Triangle’s Liberty Lighthouse - whose nautical theme embraces Oceanside’s
maritime history. Bob’s lovely wife, Kathy, looks proudly on.
The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award had not been presented since 2006.
Bob Towers was selected for his twenty years of service to the town through the
Oceanside Chamber of Commerce in which he served terms as President, Vice
President and Treasurer. Through the years, Bob’s leadership was instrumental
in growing Chamber membership to over 130 businesses. He worked to secure
the Streetscape Beautification Program and assisted in initiating the facelift for the
town “TRIANGLE” – persevering to see the “LIBERTY LIGHTHOUSE” through
from conception to its dedication in May 2007. Bob’s motivation, time, effort and
leadership have contributed to the growth and prosperity of our town and have
made a positive and significant impact in the Oceanside business community.

A Message from Our Incoming Chamber President…Gail Carlin
First and foremost, let me begin by stating how honored I am to be your new President of the
Chamber of Commerce of Oceanside. I look forward to working with you, and along with the other board
members of the chamber, to meet the challenging needs of our local business community. Together, we
will continue to foster and strengthen our relationships with other civic organizations, local schools,
charitable organizations and elected officials, as we strive to meet our business community’s goals.
On Saturday, Feb. 20 we held our annual Installation Dinner Dance at Kombert Caterers at Temple
Avodah, and it was quite a celebration! More than 190 community members were in attendance as we
honored Marty Bevilacqua, Business Person of the Year; Maria Heller, Citizen of the Year and Casey
English received the Youth Award. We also surprised Bob Towers with a Lifetime Achievement Award
for his outstanding and dedicated service to the community. Joe Garay was also honored for his years of
service as President of the chamber.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the following chamber members for their work on this annual event: Our dinner
chairperson, Steve Kass for his organizational skills; Maria Heller, Betsy Transom and Kathy Towers for their outstanding work on the
journal; Bob Transom as the evening’s excellent master of ceremonies; Kim Kellar, Jeff Eschwege, Donna Taylor, and
Jane & Bart Ward for helping with the raffles. A special thanks also to Kathy Towers for assembling and wrapping the Chamber’s
Door Prize basket and the beautiful tri-fold chamber display.
I would also like to welcome our most recent board member, Christine Vollkommer from South Shore Fitness. Thank you
Christine for joining us and we look forward to working with you.
In conclusion, with the support of our board of directors and chamber members, I know this will be a successful year filled with
significant accomplishments. I look forward to seeing you at our General Membership meetings held at 1:00 pm on the first Thursday
of each month at Union Park Café, and don’t forget to check the chamber website for evening and special events! Many are planned
in the near future!
Warm regards,
Gail S. Carlin

Murray and Santino Promote O and new Approaches to Cleaning oceanside
The age of old-fashioned hand sweeping is alive and flourishing on the downtown commercial streets of Oceanside. Initiated six years ago by Hempstead Town
Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino, the concept has one Sanitation Department employee permanently assigned to travel the single
community five days a week with a cleaning cart, brooms and bag to hand-sweep and clean the streets, sidewalks and fence lines, where paper and debris collect. This
in addition to the regular teams of sanitation workers patrolling the main business community is a way of taking the town’s cleaning program to an even higher level of
service. The areas covered encompass Long Beach Road, Atlantic Avenue and Lawson Boulevard from Merrick Road to Daly Boulevard.
“Hand sweeping the streets of our downtown business districts,” said Murray, “is a very exciting approach. For the past six years, Town Sanitation employees have been
doing a magnificent job helping to create a noticeably cleaner business environment.”
On the origin of the idea, Santino said, “I simply thought, why can’t the streets be swept as they were years ago when the neighborhood street sweeper pushing a cart
armed with brooms, brushes and rakes was a fixture in many communities? A few neighboring villages never abandoned this method of keeping streets clean, and I was
determined to bring this kind of service to Oceanside. Myself, Kate and the entire town board have been extremely pleased with the sparkling results of the community
beautification initiative.”
South Nassau’s Countdown to a Smoke-Free Campus
On June 1, the South Nassau campus will be designated totally “smoke-free”, meaning that no smoking will be permitted anywhere on the
campus or parking lots. This policy will protect patients, employees and visitors from the hazards of cigarette smoke.
This move to a smoke-free campus is driven in part by the New York Health Commissioner Richard Daine’s mission to improve the health of the
state’s residents. Other area hospitals have also implemented this policy.
South Nassau’s commitment to a smoke free campus started by implementing a five-week smoking cessation course for its employees and general
public. The next course will start on Wednesday, April 19 and is open to all. Call 516-377-5333 for further information.

FIRE SAFETY CANNOT BE TREATED LIGHTLY UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT NOTHING WILL EVER HAPPEN!
As a business or homeowner you should have a basic plan in the event of a fire or emergency. Some basic steps in the event of a fire are:
- Evacuate the building of all occupants, walk do not run, and stay calm.
- Always use the stairs never the elevator.
- If a smoke condition exists keep low to the floor to exit. It is easier to breath closer to the floor since the smoke rises.
- If a door is closed place the back of your hand on it to make sure it is not hot then proceed through the door.
- Close doors behind you to contain the fire.
- Never return into the building for any reason.
- Call the fire department from outside the building.
- Have a central meeting place for all occupants.
- Upon arrival of the fire department inform them of anyone not accounted for, the room where the fire is, what caught fire such as a bed, light fixture,
garbage can, or stove, and of any special circumstances such as a gas leak.
If it is a small fire and you decide to fight the fire make sure of the following:
- The fire department was notified.
- Your exit is not blocked in the event the fire becomes too big.
- You are about to use the proper fire extinguisher. Remember a water extinguisher does not mix with an electrical or stove fire.
Prior to a fire or emergency:
- Practice exit drills at least twice a year and have a central meeting place for all occupants.
- Have two exits.
- Have an escape ladder if your office, bedroom, apartment, etc. is on the second floor.
- Have at least two working fire extinguishers, check them periodically to make sure there charged and make sure they are the proper extinguisher for
the contents in your building...
- Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year.
- If you are the owner or a manager of a commercial building or business make sure your employees are well trained regarding the fire alarm system,
emergency equipment, and procedures. This could mean less of a headache in the event of a fire or emergency.
- Maintain good housekeeping habits; do not leave combustible materials around boilers, hot water heaters, and equipment. Examples of combustible
materials are clothing, paper, plastic, bedding, or furniture.
ANY QUESTIONS CALL THE OCEANSIDE FIRE DEPARTMENT AT 766-2717. TO REPORT A FIRE OR EMERGENCY CALL 766-0245 OR 911.
