Chlorine Alternative Fact Sheet
The Environmentally Responsible and Economically Minded Alternative to Chlorine
A Strong Disinfectant
VigorOx® WWT II is a strong disinfectant that results from the equilibrium reaction between acetic acid (vinegar) and hydrogen peroxide.
The resulting solution contains a mix of 15% Peracetic Acid (PAA) and 23% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2).
+ Acetic Acid
+ ↔ Hydrogen Peroxide
Peracetic Acid
Water
The PAA molecule is a strong oxidant that, similar to chlorine, will attack and kill pathogenic organisms of concern in wastewater treatment such
as E. coli, fecal coliforms and streptococci by disruption of the cell membrane. VigorOx WWT II offers benefits over chlorine.
More Powerful than Chlorine
The oxidation potential of PAA is higher than that of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, the two species available for the chlorination process.
In addition, the oxidant demand of PAA in wastewater is typically lower than that of chlorine.
Most municipal secondary effluents in North America can be treated with VigorOx WWT II to meet bacterial NPDES permit limits with dose rates
ranging from 1 to 3 mg/L and contact times from 10 to 30 minutes – much lower Ct values than chlorine.
Lower Toxicity to Aquatic Life
Many plants are required to de-chlorinate prior to discharge since low concentrations of chlorine can be toxic to aquatic life in the receiving waters.
Dechlorination increases disinfection complexity and cost.
The low toxicity and quick decomposition of PAA in receiving waters make VigorOx WWT II a clean, one-chemical solution. The U.S. EPA
recommended that VigorOx WWT II residuals be 1 mg/L or higher, depending on site specific condition.
Produces No Disinfection Byproducts
Oxidation of organic matter by VigorOx WWT II breaks down organics but does not produce chlorinated species that are either highly toxic (e.g.,
NDMA) or carcinogenic (e.g., TTHM), as it is typically observed in chlorination of wastewater.
Eliminates the Impact of Ammonia
VigorOx WWT II does not react with ammonia and maintains high disinfection performance even as plants go in and out of nitrification. Ammonia
not only increases demand for chlorine but also reduces its effectiveness creating chloramines.
Minimizes Capital Expense
VigorOx WWT II is offered as a complete solution including chemical supply; storage, feed and control equipment; and installation, startup and
maintenance services. All equipment is leased to municipalities for a nominal amount, minimizing or eliminating capital expenses associated with
the replacement of chlorination with alternative disinfection technologies.

Includes Storage and Containment
On-site storage is available in 6,500 gal double-wall HDLPE bulk storage tanks, or 300 gal IBC Totes. Tote containment is achieved by Roll Top Hard
Cover IBC containment units. Proper venting, piping and instrumentation are provided as a standard part of our offering.
Chemical Feed Equipment
A robust and highly engineered pump skid is provided to ensure safe and reliable continuous operation of the VigorOx Disinfection System. The skid
includes duty and redundant pumps, venting, containment and controllers. The skid and interconnecting piping is typically installed by our Field
Service personnel to ensure the highest safety standards are maintained.
Reliable Instrumentation for Process Control
Residual measurement combined with flow pacing allows for dose control in response to changes in influent water quality, which impacts disinfectant
demand, and changes in contact time due to varying flow rates, which impacts disinfection performance. The VigorOx WWT II
system includes reliable on-line PAA analyzers and process controllers to ensure adequate disinfection.
PeroxyChem - A Different Approach
PeroxyChem is a leading manufacturer and supplier of hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, persulfates and adjacent technologies. We have operations
around the world including three large production plants in North America.
Our VigorOx WWT II formulation is produced with high purity materials and proprietary processes, thus enabling us to guarantee a long shelf life and
stability during storage. We offer an end-to-end solution to microbial control problems, not just chemicals. Our laboratory, engineering, equipment, field
service and piloting capabilities are as important as our chemistry to enable our customers to achieve consistent compliance.
