They have said with parental wisdom, "We enjoy the boys in spite of their many tricks and pranks." Phil Larson and Mrs. Erickson are working diligently and enthusiastically as preceptors in Selvig Hall. The boys not only have a "big brother" to look after their needs, but also Mrs. Erickson's maternal understanding. The gracious manner in which the preceptors at the New Dorm preside has left an indelible impression on their girls. Mrs. Earle, Mrs. Larson, and Mrs. Gackowski have given their undivided attention to making life there as pleasant and homelike as possible. The boys at Robertson Hall have the "freedom to choose." They are no longer subjected to the regimentation of "freedom from choice." Mr. Nystrom, Mr. Singlestad, and Mr. Whiting merely "guide" this choice. Upon finding the best solutions to a problem our task is to present our case in such a way that it will gain acceptance. Our music world is broadened under the guidance of Miss Harman and Miss Croal. We work hard in our choral groups to perfect our songs. Even though Miss Harmon demands precision,. fun is always mixed into our rehearsals making them more enjoyable. We look forward to two big events, the Christmas and Spring Concerts. We put forth our very best to give a good performance. Individual voice and piano lessons are also given to the students that request them. These students show their talent at the annual spring recitals as well as at various other times throughout the year. 54 Mixed Octet Marilyn Balstad, Adelle Larson, Marlys love, Kathryn Clementson, Donald Wald, Norman Landby, Henry Landin, Donald Craigmile. The progress that Mr. Pond has made with the band through a limited practice is remarkable. Every Tuesday the band meets for individual lessons and mass rehearsals. FootbalI Under the direction of Coaches Lysaker and Whiting the Aggies' 1953 football team had another successful season. After losing sixteen senior lettermen, Coach Lysaker said, "This year's team made more progress in developing than any team I have ever coached." Most of the players were back a week early working hard to make the team. After little more than a week's practice we lost our first two games to Crookston Cathedral and the rugged Warren team. Then we really started to roll and won the remaining five games without much trouble. The Aggies retained the Aggie Conference Football Championship overcoming the Grand Rapids Aggies 49-0 in our Homecoming game keeping "The Little Brown Jug." Our team went to Morris for their Homecoming and retained "Ossie," the pig, by defeating the Morris Aggies 13-7. Floyd Horgen, Forward David Viker, Center James Fischer, Forward BasketbaII Basketball is one of the principal sports at the Northwest School. Mr. Charles Whiting is doing a great job molding the "B" team into a playing unit. By the time the boys are ready for the varsity squad they have been steeped in the theory of dribbling, passing, shooting, and guarding. Mr. Herschel Lysaker adds new basketball knowledge and continues to condition and train them until they become a seasoned team. The team has been having a successful season, improving with each game. Larry Driscoll, Guard Paul Eggebraaten, Guard Bruce Kramer, Guard Cheerleaders Kathie Clementson Marilyn Balstad Sylvia Jensen A d e l l e Larson Enthusiasm and sportsmanship have been greatly encouraged by the hard work and spirit of our cheerleaders and. their adviser, Miss Harman. The students have done their part with an explosive response which has bolstered the athletes and regenerated spectators. B Squad Marilyn Hovet, Marlys Fjeld, Theone Larson. Front Row: Richard Jokela, Charles Kramer, Dale Nesland, Frederick Larson, Willis Finifrock, Howard Duncan, Spencer Larson. Second Row: Donald Boushee, Maynard Veralrud, Arden Hoff, Lonnie Nelson, William Brasseur. The Northwest harriers had a good season this year. The weather was ideal at every meet. The cross country team won three dual meets; second place in the Tri-conference meet; and lost one dual meet with the Morris Aggies. Cross country is not notably a spectator’s sport. However, the members of this hill-and-dale sport make up for this by their enthusiasm and interest in improving their long-distance running. Diligence and determination are first requisites for good milers. Coach Philip Larson, Marvin Engesether, Richard Anderson, Willis Finifrock, Shimpa, Vernon Askegard, Donald Audette, Allan Brondli. Howard Duncan, Clarence Grove, SECOND ROW: Joseph Armstrong, The benefits and advantages of swimming are many and generally well known. Water sports develop grace, lung capacity, and good posture; they furnish the best all-round exercise yet discovered for young people. We are very fortunate to have our own pool at the Northwest School. The 1953-54 Aggie swimming team, under the able coaching of Philip Larson, has shown that the caliber of these athletes always runs high. In swimming as in other arts, the secret of progress is first in pointing out the difficulty,. and second in concentrating upon its removal.. Mr. Larson’s coaching brings the best out of his team. This is evident in the swimming teams that have competed under his direction. Swimming Edward Grove, Captain 74 Ernest The muscle men on the campus are well trained in the skills and techniques of the grapple game. These mat men, under the direction of Philip Larson, become seasoned wrestlers that compete in the Aggie Conference and also have meets with several other teams in the Northwest. Quick thinking and good muscular coordination are first requisites for the wrestling team. Wrestling not only develops the entire body, but by pitting man against man it is a contest of brains as well as brawn.
