loha, Telltales is now
being published 12
months a year. So
many monthly events are
planned and held at your club
that Telltales is expanding to
document the details. Thanks to Publisher Leslie Johnson
and Editor Kim Ickler for taking on this task. This issue
will update you on the Opening Day festivities as well as
detail current and future activities.
As you will read in the Vice and Rear
Commodore articles, early in January we held a
strategic planning session with the Board of Directors
and committee heads to lay the ground work for our
year ahead. It successfully brought our team together
exchanging ideas and building teamwork for
managing the business and affairs of KYC.
Opening Day was very well attended with
members running flags up the rigging, hosting
beverage ‘tastings’ and nautical attire. Find the details
with more names in Dick Perkins article. Pictures will
document the colorful activities of the day. While
judges were on the docks, our VIP guests were
entertained by George Losey and Dr Paul Nachtigall
narrating a cruise around Coconut Island followed by
a special brunch upon returning with a presentation
by Suzanne Case of the Nature Conservancy of
Hawaii. A very big thank you goes out to our manager
Ken Rakta and his staff in the front office, catering
and maintenance, the Deckhands led by Sime Gross,
Entertainment led by Roselle Nottage, and our VIP
Boat crews hosted by skippers Bob Hurd, Kimo
Corstorphine, Doug Peebles and Charlie Stone.
Around the club you will have noticed the
resurfacing project headed by George Nottingham, we
appreciate your patience with the interruption, paving
was last done 20 years ago. In the longhouse we have
been working on some beams, on the piers some
plumbing and eye bolt replacement and in the harbor
we have a small project for the launch ramp. As you
can tell our club faces the same ongoing issues of
maintenance that we find with any home or business.
If you notice something that needs attention please let
us know.
February will be a very busy month with tennis,
regattas and the Blood Bank drive being just a few
items coming up. The Valentine’s Day dinner is very
popular so make your reservations early.
During the coming year if you have ideas,
information or thoughts regarding your club please let
me or the appropriate committee chair know. I look
forward to seeing you at our events and enjoying our
club’s many activities and facilities.

urprise Surprise……
A February Telltales!
In case you hadn’t
heard Telltales will now be
published every month. A
decision was made by the Board to publish Telltales
all 12 months in order to keep the members updated
year round.
The Commodores, Board of Directors, and many
of our Committee Chairs had a very successful offsite
strategic planning session in early January. It was a
great exchange of ideas with the goal on how we make
your club better. There will be subsequent planning
sessions to formulate these ideas into a strategic plan.
Stay tuned.
By the time you read this the Dry Storage
repair/re-surfacing project will be in the final stage of
being completed. George Nottingham deserves a lot of
credit for this project as he has been the champion
behind this project right from the beginning. Anytime
you take on a project to this magnitude it is going to
cause some inconvenience and we appreciate the
understanding of all the members. Thanks goes to
George for managing this project as without his
direction this project would not have been done in a
timely manner.
If you missed Opening Day, we changed the
format from a Boat Parade to a Boat Open House
concept. The theme for the event was Flags and
Nautical. Boats and fleets were able to set up their
boats or tables that they decorated and served Bloody
Marys, Mimosas and Pupus. We had a team of judges
which rated the best Bloody Mary and Mimosa, the
best decorated boat/table/crew, and best Pupu. Prizes
were awarded at a buffet brunch which featured
Suzanne Case, State Director of The Nature
Conservancy, speaking about the Ecology of the Bay.
Over 50 invited VIPs attended the event and went on
an outstanding tour of the Bay and Coconut Island
narrated by George Losey. A BIG Mahalo goes to our
boat drivers and helpers, Bob Hurd and Caren Leder,
Kimo and Honey Corstorphine, Doug and Margaret
Peebles, Charlie and Iwalani Stone, Bob Palmer, Shari
Huntoon, and Wayne Reis. I also want to thank the
Deckhands (Sime Gross and Sandy Ragley-Wood) and
the Entertainment Committee (Roselle Nottage and
Team) for all their help; the planning and the judging
of the Boat Open House. After brunch, a Bulkhead
Race was held to kick off the Race Season and, despite
the weather, six boats participated in the race.
Next month I will provide updates on the House
and Grounds and Entertainment Events for the year.
Meanwhile, we hope to see you all at the Valentine's
Day dinner Dance.

loha all. January has
been a busy but
productive month.
Many of you may have
heard that members of the
KYC Board of Directors and many of our Committee
Chairs held an “offsite” strategic planning meeting on
Saturday, January 10. This is a common practice used
across many types of organizations to build teamwork
and support a dedicated planning effort. Thanks to
Commodore Tom Pochereva for having the foresight to
recognize the need for this effort, and also to both Tom
and Mele for graciously hosting the event. Thanks
also go to all the attendees who gave of their time and
energy to make the event a success. I see great
potential not only in the results of the session, but in
the outstanding teamwork and cooperation that was
evident throughout the process.
The Mooring Committee has been re-energized
over the last year with support from a number of long
time members and Staff Commodores and has done
great work in updating the Mooring Rules and
Regulations. We have a bit more work to do, but
members should expect to see the revisions published
shortly. At that time, we will begin a more active
program of monitoring compliance with the revised
regulations. For those members with a slip, please
review the revisions carefully when they are published
to ensure that you understand the requirements for
retaining your mooring privilege at KYC. Over time,
I will be providing regular updates via Telltales to the
membership on the status of compliance so that you
can all monitor the progress.
With the successful conclusion of our annual
Opening Day on the 25th, the Calendar Year 2015
Racing Season is officially “on” – and we are looking
forward to another outstanding season. For those
members without a lot of experience but a desire to
help out with Race Committee we have scheduled a
two-hour familiarization meeting on Wednesday,
February 11, starting at 6:00pm on the Upper Deck.
I greatly appreciate the efforts of all those
volunteers who keep the Club going strong, and look
forward to seeing many more of you as the year goes
on. Stay safe, watch out for each other, and I hope to
see you all at the Club or on the water.

loha,
The picture at right
proves that there really is a
need
for
waterproof
connections on the piers, where
connections are often less that
a foot above the sea water,
which is an excellent conductor
of electricity. The Marina
Regulations require sealed connections. Call me if you have any doubt about an
electrical installation. I have a list of parts and vendors for the Club approved
electrical connections. A good sealed connection is far cheaper than a screwed up
electrical system on your boat, or an electrical fire onboard or on the pier.
I checked with Heeia Kea pier about a rumor I had heard. They are not
pumping diesel fuel as I write this article on the January 19, but expect to be back
to pumping in a few weeks. Check with them before going at 235-2192.
The moving of the boats to accommodate the refurbishment and striping
project co-coincided with the end of big boat haul out this year on Saturday, January
17, and everything was over about 2:00 p.m. It was an amazing feat, since the
moving was scheduled for 2-3 more days. A huge Mahalo to the mob that
participated. They got organized early and the truck drivers had a rhythm going
early in the process, moving a boat and driving around the building to pick up
another. One crew was busy spotting positions for the boats to be stored, meanwhile
the haul-out team finished putting boats back in the water and cleaning up the area.
Many thanks to George Nottingham, he is the driving force behind the project. We
will need some more help with the next phase, and will put out an email when the
time comes.
Some folks thought the refurbishing was pre-mature. We just want to maintain
the asset, lest the Club pavement start to look like the Bay Drive’s worst sections.
Valentine’s Day Dinner –
Sweet Music is in the air!!
World renown entertainers will perform at Kaneohe Yacht Club for a romantic evening on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. The “Tuneful Twosome”,
Laura Sable and Bill Wiemuth have performed hundreds of shows aboard
cruises and corporate events in the past fifteen years. They both sing and Bill
accompanies on piano and guitar. Their most popular gigs have been aboard
the paddlewheelers on the Mississippi, Colombia and in Alaska.
In honor of the most romantic day of the year, the Club dinner show will
include some of the greatest love songs of all time from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel,
Patsy Cline and many more.
So break out your dancing shoes and enjoy a musical evening at KYC. Call
the club early to reserve your dinner seat.

W
e had an incredible El Toro Clinic this
January with sailors from all over Oahu
come and get some great instruction. This year we
had guest speakers Kui Lim, Marc Barra and even
John Myrdal came by to share some knowledge. The clinic was postponed one
week due to the big storm that blew through the prior weekend. Attendance was
still decent even though we changed weekends with about 20 sailors. After a
lecture on starting strategies Sunday and a sailmaking talk by Marc Barra we
spent the rest of the day on the water with many different starting drills. Kui
participated and was challenged by some of the top sailors. I also couldn't resist
and spent most of the day sailing as well. To end the clinic we had a good
debriefing and summed up with sharing the things we all learned over too many
pizzas! Everyone had big smiles and even Kui Lim said he was looking forward
to coming back next year.
On another note we are looking to attend the 2015 El Toro North Americans
in Santa Cruz July 21-24. The big challenge is finding an affordable shipping
container to bring all of our El Toros! In the past we have had a good relationship
with Horizon Lines and they were able to sponsor us to bring boats to and from
Hawaii. Horizon Lines is being sold possibly before our event in July. We are
applying to the Matson Foundation. If we are able to get some sponsorship from
them then we should get a great turn out! I'll keep you all posted and if you have
shipping connections please get in touch!
Our Spring sailing class sign ups are open through the KYC front office
and the first class is February 14th. Hope to see all the juniors back in action and
on the water then! Aloha, Jesse

Also the Deckhands helped with a Wounded Warriors outing. The

SPRING 2015 KYC
JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
KYC's 2015 Spring Junior Sailing Classes are held every
Saturday from February 14th through May 9th. This Spring
we have expanded our classes from 11 to 13 weeks. We will
be starting one week earlier and are keeping the prices very
affordable at $5 to $7 an hour per student. Whether or not
a student was enrolled in the Summer Program or some
other session, take this opportunity to participate in our
Spring Junior Sailing Program!
As a primary benefit, the Spring classes are normally a
smaller class size so students can take advantage of a
better instructor to student ratio. Students in the Topper class
will also have more opportunities to sail by themselves and
accelerate up into other classes at a faster pace. These
classes focus on safety, fun and sailing skill building. In
addition to regularly scheduled classes, the program offers
participation in local regattas, Friday night El Toro races, and
Sunday Laser and 420 Races.
Spring Sailing Program Schedule
Novice Topper Sailing - This is a Learn-To-Sail class for students aged 8 to 18. If a student has little to no sailing experience or has taken a
few years ashore and wants to rediscover sailing, this is the class. Classes are primarily taught in Toppers, our beginning sailboat. Boats are
provided for all students enrolled in this class. Curriculum will include the basics of sailing, including parts of the boat, points of sail, and boat
handling. The goal of this course is to have fun in a safe and educational atmosphere.
Classes will be held on Saturday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Introduction to Racing- This is for the sailor who understands the basic fundamentals of sailing including, rigging, points of sail, docking and
terminology. Sailors must be competent in capsize recovery and be able to sail a boat by themselves. Curriculum will focus on performance
dinghy handling in El Toros and 420s and will introduce racing skills. The goal of this class is to improve sailing skills and to gain a basic
understanding of sailboat racing and tactics.
Classes will be held on Saturday from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Advanced Racing- No messing around!! Junior Sailors interested in more advanced levels of sailing including racing, tactics, boat handling,
and boat maintenance, should enroll in this class. Students who participate in this class will work closely with students of all ages to improve
sportsmanship, leadership and sailing competence. This class will require more time and effort on the part of the sailor and will require
attendance at local regattas.
El Toro classes will be held from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
Laser and 420 Classes will be from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
Special Notes for Intermediate and Advanced Class Students: There are additional fees for regattas usually around $10.00. Parent participation
is appreciated to help with loading and unloading of the trailers and transportation of sailors to and from the regatta sites.
Costs
Junior Spring Sailing Class tuition will be $255 for Members and $295 for Non-members for all classes. Tuition for students registering for both
Saturday morning and afternoon classes will be $465 for Members and $545 for Non-members.
A 10% discount is applied to students using their own boat and for sibling signing up at the same time. No refunds will be available for missed
classes.
Partial scholarships may be available. Please contact the KYC front office at 247-4121 if you have any questions.
Registration
Registration and packets will be handled through the KYC Office. All appropriate registration and release forms along with full payment must
be completed in order to guarantee a place in the class.
For further information contact Jesse Andrews, Director of Sailing, Kaneohe Yacht Club, 247-4121, ext. 22 or by e-mail
coach_jesse@hotmail.com.
Sunday Class Boat Racing- On scheduled Sundays throughout the Spring, 420s and Lasers are welcome to race in the KYC Classboat races.
The start is at Noon and there will be three races a day around the harbor buoys. There is no entry fee for the series but to use one of KYC's
420s, a reservation must be made for the boat through the KYC Office.
