grown-up tastes
JEFF ZALAZNICK, A CO-OWNER OF POPULAR
casual Italian eatery Parm, is such a fan of the ice cream
cake that he and his partners built their dessert menu
around it. “We wanted to create the ultimate cake from
our childhoods,” he says. So charged, Parm’s pastry
chef Heather Bertinetti rethought the classic spumoni
trio: pistachio, strawberry and chocolate ice cream—
all homemade—separated by cookie-crunch layers. As

for the traditional cherry on
top? Well, some things just
can’t be improved.
Here’s the real topper,
though: just in time for summer, Parm is expanding its
UHSHUWRLUH RI LFH FUHDP ÁDvors (including peach melba
and tiramisu); the new cakes
will now also be available
through parmnyc.com.
Of course, there’s more than one city shop (shoppe?)
turning ice cream cake craft into high art. “Those childhood cakes captured the imagination but never delivered in terms of taste,” says Ample Hills Creamery’s
owner Brian Smith. He’s determined to make sure the
versions that come out of his Brooklyn space do. Ample
Hills works its way up from a chewy layer of brownie
(or another dense cake) then adds other gooey ice cream
accoutrements, such as hot fudge or caramel. What it
doesn’t add is frosting. “Traditional buttercream doesn’t

you can’t pronounce,” Smith
says. Instead, his cakes get
a head of whipped cream
while the sides remain as is.
Each establishment on the
artisanal ice cream cake circuit has its own twist. OddFellows Ice Cream Co., which
was born in Williamsburg
but currently sells out of the
East Village, sprays layers of

or … poo on grass. (Hey, who are we to judge?)
Be warned, though. These ice cream cakes are not an
impulse buy. “These cakes take time and space, two
things small shops don’t have much of,” says OddFellows co-owner Mohan Kumar. So take the advice of Il
Laboratorio del Gelato’s Jon Snyder and email your order a few days ahead. “We don’t make it easy,” he says.
“But we do make it amazing.” – By Sharlene Breakey

RIDGEWOOD MAY BE QUEENS, BUT IT’S QUEENS BY WAY OF BROOKLYN.
To get there, you hop the M, but head downtown and to Brooklyn, before looping back around near the end of the line. Many recent proprietors have taken a
similar route, running hotspots in Williamsburg, Bushwick or Greenpoint before
setting up shop beside original homesteaders Ridgewood Eats and Rudy’s
Bakery & Cafe. Yet, shady side streets and scooting kids make it clear you’re not
in industrial Brooklyn anymore. Here’s where to go and what to see once you
arrive in the center of it all at Seneca Avenue. – Sharlene Breakey

metal soundtrack and friendly vibe to boot.
From the owner of The Drink in Williamsburg.

Stroll up tree-lined Onderdonk Avenue and
hang a left on Flushing to find the charming
mid-17th-century Dutch farmhouse that
is home to the Greater Ridgewood Historical
Society and the beloved Out in the Streets
art and music festival held each August.

Once a month, artisans take over Gottscheer

8 TOPOS
788 Woodward Ave., 347-927-5680
While you’re browsing this well-curated used
bookstore and coffee shop, note the schedule
of readings and performances. You can’t post
your finds, though; the owners have gone
WiFi-less, to coax customers out of the cyber
world and into this one.

With an impressive lineup of local beer,
sustainable wines and small plates (braised

be as big a hit as Norma’s, the owners’ other
establishment a couple of blocks
away, which serves lattes, homemade
pastries and sandwiches.

queens night market
Failed Kickstarter campaign be damned; a
slammed opening proved what founder John
Wang always knew: New Yorkers are hungry
for an after-dark market. Really, though, the
Queens International Night Market, which
sets up shop in the Hall of Science parking lot
in Flushing, is much more than that. It is an
ambitious cultural experiment—”an event, like
a concert or a show,” says Wang. We asked
about his vision and what’s next—besides
the 15 slated for this year. - by Haylin Belay
WHY QUEENS?
If you’re planning to draw as diverse a
demographic as possible, where else? We
want to serve the local community, and
also neighborhoods along the 7 line, plus
families from Manhattan and Brooklyn. We’re
encouraging vendors to keep prices low so it
is accessible to everyone.
AND BY EVERYONE YOU MEAN … ?
For foodies, we’re debuting Fire Noodles,
straight from China. And coming soon, there’s
a crawfish boil. More adventerous eaters will
want to check out Pig on a Stick, which offers
all the stuff you wouldn’t normally eat—organs,
nose, ears—in a way you wouldn’t normally
eat it: on a stick! Of course, those a little pickier
will have plenty of choices, too: Korean fried
chicken, meatballs, mac and cheese, pizza.
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU
THINKING ABOUT OFFERING?
Local artists and performers, so visitors can
engage with the creative elements of the
ethnicities represented here. That’s where the
cultural exchange happens.
Open select Saturdays from 6p.m. to
midnight. Go to queensnightmarket.com for
dates. Accessible via the 7 train.

THE PAYOFF
It’s a long ride, but worth it, because like every great bike
ride, there is food at the end. After crossing Flushing
Creek, stop at Debasaki (33-67 Farrington St.), a Japanese
fried chicken joint near Leavitts Park. Or go a mile farther
east to the triple crown of Korean BBQ: Kum Sung Chik
Naengmyun (40-07 149th Place), Mapo B.B.Q. (149-24
41st Ave.) and Han Joo Chik Naeng Myun & BBQ (41-06
149th Place), for cold noodles, kimchi and kalbi. It’s about
10 miles from the Queensboro Bridge and shouldn’t take
more than an hour—minus eating time, of course.

MARINE PARK
2880 Flatbush Ave., 718-252-4625
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: If not for Trump’s new track, this
would be the city’s toughest course. Nearly 7,000 yards from the back tees, the links-style layout
features wide, rolling fairways and huge greens, putting a
premium on distance and accuracy.
Don’t be shy about hitting from the
middle or front tees—you’ll still need everything in the bag
to get home. Conditions have improved over the last few
years after decades of neglect, but the nonstop play takes its
toll. The wind-swept greens are hard and slick, arguably the
city’s best.
FUN FACT: Designed by legendary architect Robert Trent
Jones—he of Spyglass Hill and Firestone and roughly 498
other tracks.
FEES: $39 weekdays, $48 weekends.
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: 5 train to Flatbush
Ave./Brooklyn College, then Q35 to Flatbush Ave./Marine
Park.
PELHAM BAY & SPLIT ROCK
BX
5BOROS RATING:
870 Shore Rd., 718-885-1258
OVERVIEW: Both courses are fairly long at
NYC’s only 36-hole facility, with wide, reasonably forgiving fairways that tighten up on approaches and
require a full bag of shot-making skills. Greens are true and
well-kept, but don’t be afraid to hit to the hole. The staff
may be the friendliest in the city.
BX
TRUMP GOLF
LINKS AT FERRY POINT
5BOROS RATING:
500 Hutchinson River Pkwy., 718-414-1555
OVERVIEW: A world-class golf course. Long,
lean and buffeted by steady winds off the water, this classic
Nicklaus design features lots of elevated greens, well-placed
hazards and rolling, fescue-covered mounds. Bring your
A-game.
Opening day was April 1st, so be
wary of anyone who claims to “know” the course. Early
word has it that the greens are fast, firm and easily the
best kept in the city.
FUN FACT: Those weird-looking green poles dotting the
course are exhaust vents for methane seeping out of the
landfill below.
Don’t fret if the first tee is a traffic jam.
Play tends to open up after the first par-3, and there are rangers
aplenty on hand to prod stragglers. Pelham is more popular, but
take whichever course is offered and you’ll enjoy it.
FUN FACT: The back nine is particularly challenging, with
Nos. 15, 16 and 17 known by many as “NYC’s Amen
Corner.”
FEES: $39 weekdays, $48 weekends.
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: 6 to Pelham Park,
then B45 bus.
SOUTH SHORE
SI
5BOROS RATING:
200 Huguenot Ave., 718-984-0101
OVERVIEW: A hidden gem, South Shore has
gotten a major boost the last few years thanks
to improved maintenance. Wide fairways require some pop
off the tee, and the greens tend to be tight and tricky.
FEES: $141 weekdays, $169 weekends.
The best thing about this place is that
nobody seems to know about this place. (Oops)
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: BxM9 to E. Tremont/
Sampson Ave., then Bx42 to Harding Ave./Emerson Ave.

FUN FACT: Built near the town of Harrisville, the first free African American community in the nation, South Shore hosted

DYKER BEACH

NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: M train to Myrtle-Wyckoff Aves., then Q55 bus to Myrtle Ave./85th St.
5BOROS RATING:
PHOTO: MICHAEL ROBERTO PHOTOGRAPHY
PREVIOUS PAGE PHOTO: COURTESY OF THE TRUMP ORGANIZATION
OVERVIEW: Although it has its share of ho-hum
holes, a few standouts (especially Nos. 5, 7, 9,
12, 15 and 16) make this a memorable and popular course.
And if your game is on, you’ve got a good shot to go low.
Dyker is known as the “most played”
golf course in the country, and whether that’s true or not,
the track is notorious for slow play and seemingly endless
waits. But a well-timed round (early afternoons on weekdays, crack of dawn on weekends) will last just a tad over
four hours. Great for singles.
FUN FACT: Legend has it that U.S. Army Col. Earl Woods
first caught the golf bug when he was stationed at the
nearby Ft. Hamilton military base, a bug he later passed
down to his son, Tiger.
LA TOURETTE
SI
1001 Richmond Hill Rd., 718-351-1889
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: Once considered the city’s best
golf destination, La Tourette now faces stiff
competition from its neighbors across the Verrazano. But
it remains one of the more challenging tracks in town,
and at 6,708 yards, this run is a legit par-72 that requires
distance and touch.
The earlier you tee off the faster you
will play, but expect a weekend round of between five and
six hours.
FEES: $40 weekdays, $48 weekends.
FUN FACT: The course was originally farmland belonging to
David and Ann LaTourette. Their 1870 mansion serves as a
clubhouse.
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: R train to 86th St.
FEES: $40 weekdays, $48 weekends.
FOREST PARK
QN
101 Forest Park Dr., 718-296-0999
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: X10B bus to N. Gannon Ave./Bradley Ave., Staten Island, then S91 bus to Travis
Ave./Bogota St. (one-mile walk).
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: With trees lining most fairways,
Forest Park lives up to its name. And despite
being just over 6,000 yards from the tips, this is one of the
hardest, most-punitive courses in the city. With three water
holes and several elevated greens, it’s a top pick for many
NYC Muni Tour mainstays.
Smart play and good placement trump
CLEARVIEW PARK
QN
202-12 Willets Point Blvd., 718-229-2570
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: Short, straight and a little boring,
Clearview is the most generic of the city’s
courses. Its 6,300 yards are flat and all but trouble-free,
making it ideal for high handicappers.
5BOROS.COM | SUMMER 2015 | 21
There’s a circuitous approach to tee
times, requiring golfers to check in and wait for their names
to be called on a loudspeaker—followed by a 20- or 30-minute wait at the first tee. You’ve been warned.
FUN FACT: Built in 1925, it was originally known as the
Clearview Golf and Yacht Club, an exclusive, private getaway
for Gotham’s Gilded Age elites. The city bought it in 1931,
when said elites went belly up.
FEES: $48 weekdays, $56 weekends; discounts after noon.
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: QM2 bus to Cross
Island Pkwy./201 St.
VAN CORTLANDT
BX
115 Van Cortlandt Park South, 718-543-4595
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: This tight, parkland layout with lots
of trees is less forgiving than the typical muni
but despite its rough-around-the-edges-vibe, it remains one
of New York’s most enjoyable—and accessible—courses.
Barely 6,000 yards from the tips, the landing areas tend to
be narrow, and heavy play leaves little time for maintenance.
The first tee is less than 600 yards
from the subway, making “Vanny” the easiest course to
access via public transportation.
FUN FACT: Built in 1895, Van Cortlandt is America’s oldest
public golf course, and over the years its been played by the
likes of Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and the Three Stooges.
FEES: $39 weekdays, $48 weekends; twilight rate $22 (after
2 p.m.)
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: 1 train to Van
Cortland Park.
DOUGLASTON PARK
QN
KISSENA
QN
164-15 Booth Memorial Ave., 718-939-4594
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: At just 4,665 yards, Kissena is a
pitch and putt on steroids, featuring eight par3s and 10 par-4s with a maximum hole length of about 350
yards. But it sits right in the heart of Fresh Meadows, making
the city feel very far away.
You don’t need the big stick to make
your way around this par-64, but you will need a full complement of short and long irons. More than half of the greens
are postage-stamp small, so take dead aim.
FUN FACT: Free parking!
FEES: $39 weekdays, $48 weekends; eeekday “early birds”
$19.25
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: M train to Woodhaven Blvd., then Q88 bus to Horace Harding Exp./172 St.
(half-mile walk).
MOSHOLU
BX
3545 Jerome Ave., 718-655-9164
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: With just nine holes, Mighty Mosholu is a nice option for a quick golf fix. The
holes are mostly par-3s and short par-4s, but the greens are
well-kept and not to be underestimated.
The staff likes to cater to the workingman, and even offers discounts to caddies taking a break
from the tony tracks of Upper Westchester. (Be prepared
to talk the talk.) Better still: Nobody stresses much about
decorum—or pace of play—making Mosholu a great spot for
first-timers.
FUN FACT: Did we mention it has nine holes?
6320 Marathon Pkwy., 718-428-1617
FEES: $27 weekdays, $35 weekends; $10 replay all times.
5BOROS RATING:
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: 4 train to
Woodlawn Rd.
OVERVIEW: A very short, very hilly track,
Douglaston is known as much for its views of
New York City as its unusual, 5,500-yard layout, e.g., seven
par-3s. A former country club that was converted to a muni
in the 1960s, the beautifully-restored clubhouse lends a
layer of class. And at less than 5,500 yards, loops don’t
last forever.
Despite the country club pedigree,
Douglaston is light on amenities, with no practice range and
only a tiny, five-hole putting green. They also don’t allow
carts in the parking lot, so you’ll have to lug your sticks—
uphill (both ways.) The mere threat of rain seems to deter
most duffers, making it a good spot for die-hards when the
weather is poor.
SILVER LAKE
SI
915 Victory Blvd., 718-447-5686
5BOROS RATING:
OVERVIEW: This nine-hole track doesn’t get
much love but improved maintenance, tricky
greens and bargain prices make for a fun round. Or two.
It’s not uncommon to call the
clubhouse on a Friday and be told there are “open times”
all weekend. But after you wait 40 minutes on the first
tee, you’ll realize you weren’t the only one to snag that
prime 8 a.m. slot.
FUN FACT: Situated on the highest point in Queens, Douglaston was formerly known as the North Hills Country Club.
FUN FACT: Two holes, No. 3 and No. 7, have alternating
greens, offering a different look if you go for the second loop.
FEES: $39 weekdays, $49 weekends.
FEES: $13 weekdays, $15 weekends; replays for $5.
NEAREST PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: F train to 169th St.,
then Q-17A to Marathon Pkwy.

Scavenger hunts offer a new way to see the city
By Deanna Cioppa Photography by Kristine Larsen
T
HE EVENING SUN THREATENED TO SLIDE
behind the brick facades of Brooklyn
Heights as our pack of intrepid trackers
stalked down Willow Street. We were on
the lookout for the home of a local literary
luminary. After counting stone animals and digesting
the area’s abolitionist past, we were on a roll. But we
couldn’t dawdle; we needed to make the Promenade
before sunset curtailed our mission.
Clutching our crumpled clue lists—courtesy of
scavenger hunt organizer Watson Adventures—like
treasure maps, we examined every plaque and cornice
that adorned the neighborhood’s blocks. As a Brooklyn
Heights neophyte, I was discovering quite a bit about
my new home borough. But even someone more familiar with those streets would have trouble avoiding the
exploration’s lure.
That’s exactly why, three decades ago, Watson AdYHQWXUHVIRXQGHU%UHW:DWVRQFUHDWHGKLVÀUVWKXQWIRU
friends through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He
always believed there was a certain magic and camaraderie in sharing hidden-in-plainsight treasures.
“Growing up, the most exciting
day of the year was when my dad
would take me on the LIRR into the
city,” says Watson, who’s lived in
three boroughs, though he currently
resides in Westchester. “The scavenger hunt brings back a little of that
experience. We show you streets you
may never have walked, buildings
you may never have looked at,
things you didn’t know about. You
see the city with new eyes.”
Today, Watson Adventures (watsonadventures.com) has outposts in
eight cities across the country. The

Bronx Zoo to DUMBO. Clearly, they have landed on an
opportunity: these days, companies like Secret City and
cityHUNT, and smartphone apps like Stray Boots, also
help New Yorkers satisfy their narcissistic obsession.
To create the discovery routes and questions that
propel them, Watson producers dive deep into local
history before hitting the streets themselves to gather
more data. The point of a hunt, says producer Rachel
Duncan, is not simply to identify landmarks but to
UHYHDOWLQ\GHWDLOVWKDWRHUJOLPSVHVRIROG1HZ<RUN
that you might normally miss on your way to work
with your eyes glued to a smartphone. “For example,”
Duncan says, “our Meatpacking District hunt contains
the location where Alexander Hamilton was taken after
he was shot in his duel with Aaron Burr. It happens to
be a spot close to where the Carpathia, which transported the Titanic survivors, docked. There’s so much to
talk about, and it’s ever-changing.”
Duncan’s
team often revisit

innovative as well—the High Line, the
Whitney and three-day-old street art. But
“as New York changes,” she says, “I think it’s
important to know that the Meatpacking District was not always hipster jean stores. If we lose
what the history is, we’ll lose the heart of the city.”
Staring at the skyline of Manhattan—old towers
mingling with new—I completely understood what
she meant.
And, yes, we found that writer’s house.
