LUIS GOMEZ MBA, UC Irvine, MS in Civil Engineering, Cal State Long Beach Combined a graduate business education with engineering skills in order to serve his community at a higher level. Today he works as a Project Manager for Lewis Operating Corporation as part of his commitment to building healthy and safe places to live and work. In the Foundation’s tradition of giving back, Luis continues to play an integral leadership role in the process of selecting undergraduate Scholars and helping them succeed. JAZMIN GARCIA BAs in Political Science and Spanish University of Notre Dame Class of 2004 Graduated as the first Latina to be elected as a class president in the University’s 164year history. As a TELACU Scholar, Jazmin was given a wealth of academic support and the opportunity to intern for US Senator Tom Harkin, an experience that spurred on her political interests. She is now studying law at DePaul University. ARTURO GONZALEZ PhD in Economics, University of Santa Barbara, Class of 1997 Taught as a professor at the University of Arizona and Universidad Carlos Ill de Madrid. He currently conducts research for the Public Policy Institute of California, focusing on issues of immigration and education. Still returning to visit his East LA high school, Arturo inspires students with his story - from studying economics as a UCLA undergrad to impacting key social issues in California YAZMIN SANTIAGO MBA, Brigham Young University Class of 2007 Earned her Masters in Business, with a concentration in Finance, through BYU’s Marriott School/TELACU MBA Program. Today she serves as a Senior Financial Analyst for the Intel Corporation in Portland. With the same spirit of volunteerism she demonstrated as BYU’s President of Women in Management, Yazmin continues to empower her community through events such as Intel’s Adopt-a-Family campaign and tree planting project. Administered by the TELACU Education Foundation, the Scholarship Program was created in 1983 to develop and empower leaders in the communities it serves. Forty colleges and universities throughout the nation have joined TELACU in its commitment to help provide access to higher education for deserving students. Eligibility Criteria • • • • Be a first-generation college student Be from a low-income family Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 California Applicants: Be a permanent resident of unincorporated East Los Angeles, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Huntington Park, City of Los Angeles, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pico Rivera, Pomona & the Inland Empire, Santa Ana, South Gate, or other communities selected by the TELACU Education Foundation for inclusion in the Scholarship Program* • Texas Applicants: Be a permanent resident of San Antonio or Austin • Illinois Applicants: Be a permanent resident of Greater Chicagoland Area • New York Applicants: Be a permanent resident of the state of New York Selection Criteria A select pool of applicants will be invited to interview with the scholarship selection committee consisting of representatives from our community, and our corporate and educational partners. Candidates will be ranked according to their ability to demonstrate a combination of the following: • Outstanding academic potential • Genuine commitment to the community • A need for financial and academic support in order to successfully complete a post-secondary program In order to be considered for the TELACU Scholarship Program, candidates must submit their completed application, together with all required documents, postmarked no later than March 29, 2008. *The TELACU Education Foundation reserves the right to make the final selection of scholarship recipients based upon, but not limited to, the criteria described in this brochure. More Than Just Financial Support Faced with the new rigors of college life, the future leaders of our community need more than just financial support during their collegiate years. In 1992, TELACU created a retention program called the College Advisement & Leadership Program (CALP) to help ensure the success of our Scholars in attaining their educational goals. TELACU Scholars learn to successfully navigate the college experience through study skills and time management seminars, motivational talks, counseling and leadership training. Required of all TELACU Scholars entering college for the first time, the Program helps students make the transition from high school to college and, ultimately, into the workplace. Other elements of CALP include: Career Preparation Financial Education Graduate School Preparation Internship Component Leadership Component Mentoring Component Parental Support Component Special Awards The following Special Awards help us identify individuals studying in fields of particular importance to TELACU.These awards can be applied at any post-secondary institution but vary according to geographic location. TELACU Arts Award Students majoring in Fine Arts, Music, Dance, Drama or Theatre are eligible for this award. TELACU/Cesar Chavez Leadership Award Named in honor of the great leader, this scholarship is awarded to a student who exhibits outstanding leadership abilities as evidenced by both academic accomplishments and community activities. TELACU Engineering Award Students majoring in Engineering are eligible for this award. To be considered, applicants must have already completed 12 college credits/units of engineering coursework with a minimum GPA of 3.0. TELACU Teaching Award A four-year scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior interested in pursuing a teaching career. Other Scholarship Programs BYU Marriott School/TELACU MBA Program* TELACU’s partnership with the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University enables qualified applicants to receive a scholarship – to cover tuition and a small living stipend – for one of the nation’s finest MBA programs. Citi/TELACU Scholars Program* Funded through a partnership with the Citi Foundation, scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded to qualified students interested in business careers. Citi/TELACU Scholars are also matched with mentors who guide and prepare them for a variety of careers following graduation. David C. Lizárraga Graduate Fellowship* Sponsored by Toyota, Fellowships are awarded to MBA students who demonstrate the potential and commitment to advance TELACU’s mission of building self-sufficient communities through economic empowerment. Fellows engage in a project that utilizes and strengthens their business skills. Health Careers Program In partnership with Downey Regional Medical Center and White Memorial Medical Center, the Foundation offers special scholarships to nursing and health care technician students attending East Los Angeles College and Rio Hondo College. Toyota/TELACU Scholarship Program* Funded through a partnership with Toyota, scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded to qualified junior and senior students interested in business and/or engineering careers. TELACU Scholarship Program Awards Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $5,000, which include any matching funds from the college or university. There are two types of scholarships: Continuing Scholarships and One-Year Scholarships. Financial Partners Continuing Scholarships If you will be entering college for the first time this fall, you are eligible for a scholarship that can be renewed for 4 years. To renew the scholarship in subsequent years, Scholars must: ❏ Attend all sessions of the College Advisement & Leadership Program each year ❏ Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and submit official transcripts to the Foundation for verification ❏ Inform the Foundation of any changes in address, phone number or academic standing ❏ Volunteer 20 hours of service annually to the TELACU Education Foundation or other community organization One-Year Scholarships If you are currently enrolled at or plan to transfer to one of our 40 partnering colleges or universities, you may apply for a one-year award if you: ❏ Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 ❏ Plan to enroll full-time for the entire academic year ❏ Agree to volunteer 20 hours of community service ❏ Meet the eligibility criteria detailed in this brochure About TELACU TELACU is a pioneering institution committed to service, empowerment, advancement, and the creation of self-sufficiency.
