Article-length manuscript that argues that guidance counseling practices (including scaffolding, and the strategic use of a planning timeline) matter for post-secondary planning. “Monograph-based Introduction to Sociology.” Revise & resubmit. Pedagogical essay on monograph-based intro class. RESEARCH IN PROGRESS Post-secondary Paradoxes: Regular Kids’ Plans for the Future. Book-length manuscript addressing the educational pathways of average students in the context of a strong college-for-all ideology. The project shows how the mundane details of students’ daily lives are patterned to produce and reproduce systems of privilege. This project builds on more 2 | Devine-Eller CV, September 2013 devineau@grinnell.edu than two years of multiple ethnographic methods, including focus groups, school-day shadowing and repeated interviews of 17 focal students, and interviews with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators, as well as follow-up interviews with students two years after graduation. “SAT Tutoring as Concerted Cultivation.” Article-length manuscript that argues that teenagers begin to take on their own concerted cultivation. “Teachers’ Dilemmas: Advising Regular Kids in the College-for-all Era.” Article-length manuscript that explores the ways teachers navigate postsecondary planning in a racially and socioeconomically diverse high school with diverse post-secondary outcomes. Project developed and conducted by students in my Sociology of Education courses, spring and fall 2013. 2011 Syllabus Design and Development Coordinator. Responsible for mentoring other TAs and organizing workshops. 2008-2009 Research Assistant for Drs. Carol Boyer and David Mechanic at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research. Compiled literature reviews for Mechanic and ran statistics (using SPSS) on the Rutgers Hospital and Community Survey for Boyer. 2007-2008 Computer Lab Teaching Assistant (Department of Sociology, Rutgers University). Responsible for developing and teaching workshops about computer software, data analysis, web design, and organization. Held office hours weekly to assist other graduate students and faculty. Responsible for major and minor website design and updates (sociology.rutgers.edu) including committee design and sole execution of that design. 2004 Principal (& sole) investigator for survey data collection investigating the impact of gendered pronouns on the verbal portion of the SAT. Administered and collected approximately 1000 surveys from Rutgers undergraduates, and conducted 5 follow-up focus groups.
