MAYS LANDING – A 14-year-old Atlantic City juvenile male has been charged with the murder of a 13-year-old Atlantic City boy, Acting First Assistant Prosecutor Diane
Ruberton announced today.
On Friday, Jan. 10
, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office charged the 14-year-old with murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection with the fatal shooting of Angel Mercado-Santiago, 13, of Atlantic City. The juvenile complaint was issued by
Judge James L. Jackson. The arrest has not yet been made.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, shortly before 3 p.m., the defendant fired several shots at a group of teens. Mercado-Santiago was struck in the chest. A 15-year-old male was also struck and sustained a non-life-threatening wound to the leg.
Atlantic City Police responded to the scene. Both victims were transported to
AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where Mercado-Santiago was pronounced dead.
The defendant
’s name will not be released to the public due to his being a juvenile.
Once detained, he will be lodged at Harborfields Juvenile Detention Center pending a juvenile waiver to adult criminal court.
This homicide is under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major
Crimes Unit and the Atlantic City Police Department.
