Many women wanted to go to war but, did not because war was a man’s business. In order for a women to go to war they had to cut their hair short, dress themselves to look like men, change their names, and then they had to find a recruiter to enlist them in the war. Women also had to get a physical examination, it included a reasonable height, at least a partial set of teeth so that they can tear open a powder cartridge, and have enough pressure for a trigger finger. Also a large number of women when they went to army went with a husband, brother, sweetheart, or father. WEATHER On November 4TH 1864 the weather was mostly sunny with a chance of rain. The high was of 63 and a low of 41. http://go.galegroup.com THE RICHMOND SHOUT OUT ! PAGE 2 http://commons.wikimdia.org http://americanhistory.abc-clio.com EDITORIAL In the 1864 presidential election McClellan ran against Lincoln, but just as I suspected, Lincoln won. Lincoln won 2,218,388 votes and McClellan only got 1,812,807 votes. I’m not happy that Lincoln won because he wants to abolish slavery but (and I think I speak for all confederates when I say ) we want slavery to stay because we need the slaves to work the plantations. If I was McClellan I wouldn't have the nerve to stand up to Lincoln because he was unhappy with the way McClellan ran the army at Bull Run. Since Lincoln is president again for the next four years, we can only hope for a big victory to defeat the north to keep the south on its rightful path. Angela Wolf Lifestyles and Foods in Gettysburg The civil war is taking a toll on our everyday life. The civilians cannot afford to go to the theatre etc., because the economy is so bad from the war. Food prices went very high during the war. For example bacon went from $0.33 to $7.50 per pound. Wheat and coffee also went up astronomically. We have had to substitute parched corn for coffee. When will this end? Some of our money was all for the war, like for weapons, and food. We had to give up curtains and rugs for the soldiers so they could have clothing, shelter, bandages and bedding. As bad as civilians had it, soldiers had it worse. They were tired, hungry, discouraged and sick. Lets pray for the soldiers and thank everyone for supporting the war. Angela Wolf THE RICHMOND SHOUT OUT! PAGE 3 LETTER TO THE EDITOR Finally the recoil of the incomplete and imperfect nation that we have been living in for the last 70 year. For 7 decades, the presence of slavery in a republic founded on the principles of freedom. The freedom for a man to do with his property as he pleases. That was until the north decided that it is morally wrong and expect us to give them not only our property, our way of being, our life style, our freedom. But after taking so much abuse by Lincoln and Yankee friends we strike back. In the summer of 1861 the two armies of a divided nation clashed for the first time on the fields over looking bull run. Ten hours of heavy fighting swept away any notion the war’ s outcome would be decided quickly. As our outnumbered troops screeched out the infamous rebel yell and drove out the pencil pushing Yankees back to Washington. Despite the victory in bull run this war has just begun. Carlos E.
