Becoming What We Behold The Hospitality of Abraham and Sarah Iconography by Themistoklis Petrou For Phase I – East Iconography Program Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Ann Arbor, Michigan Becoming What We Behold Faith and Tradition, the Holy Sacraments, Iconography, the Holy Canons, Hagiography, and the practices and important customs of the Greek Orthodox Church are expressly meant to be transformative. They are meant to bring us out of our current state of existence and lead us to the highest spiritual reality: union with God and communion with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Father Nicolaos H. Kotsis According to Holy Tradition, the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke wrote the first icons of the most pure Theotokos bearing in her arms the pre-eternal Child, our Lord Jesus Christ. When she saw them, she cried out with her most pure lips, May my grace and that of Him Who was born of me be with these icons! The Holy Apostle Luke also wrote on panels depictions of the holy pre-eminent Apostles Peter and Paul. This is the Holy Orthodox Tradition and most honorable art of iconography, which adorn our Churches and homes. By this Holy Tradition, Our Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos, Angels and Saints are glorified; and the faithful, who piously venerate their holy icons, receive salvation. Based on The Great Collection of the Lives of the Saints (Vol. 2, October, English translation) (7) Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple C C Christ Healing the Woman with an Issue of Blood Example Icons written by Mr. Themis Petrou 2 INTRODUCTION The Holy Orthodox Tradition of Iconography continues in the Western section of the Church, identified as Phase II – West, with Mr. Petrou’s vision for iconographic unity and theological representations that teach. The iconography program includes icons of the Holy Evangelists, Apostles and Saints including Hymnographers, as well as scenes from the Old Testament and New Testament, complementing icons in the Eastern part of the Church. Also included are icons in the Nursery for children. Mr. Petrou’s Iconography is in traditional Byzantine style, and examples of Mr. Petrou’s icons are illustrated herein. The building shape in the Western section of the Church is formed by the Choir loft and balcony, which are considered in this Iconography Program. The Divine Services, in honor and commemoration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Holy Theotokos and the Saints, are celebrated by the priest and the faithful. The faithful, including the chanters and choir, offer responses to the priest and sing the Psalms and other hymns of worship. The iconography program in the Western section of the Church includes icons of Saints for their contributions to Liturgical Hymnology, Traditions of the Orthodox Faith, and the universality of the Faith. Included are icons for the Five Sundays of Great Lent, icons of Holy Equal to the Apostles and of Saints to honor martyrs and confessors who struggled and suffered for their faith in defense of icon veneration. Icons of Great Martyr Saints and Healing Saints will be included in future phases on the North and South walls of the Nave. ICON EXAMPLES Some icon examples included in this brochure are by the hand of Mr. Petrou; others are copied from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese web site and from other sources as examples only. Icons to be placed in Saint Nicholas Church will be ecclesiastically approved. While the subject of new icons will be the same as examples, the style and details of Mr. Petrou’s iconography may differ from these examples. Each and every icon is unique. For more inspirational examples of iconography written by Mr. Petrou for Greek Orthodox Churches, visit his web site at: http://www.themispetrou.gr. For further explanations of iconography in this second phase, refer to a separate booklet Iconography Program, Phase II – West, With Biblical References and Icon Examples. Included with the examples of icons, are descriptions, Biblical texts, hymns and historical explanations for each icon, as well as lists of Biblical, liturgical and iconography reference sources. Since Iconography is the visual representation of Holy Scripture, it is important to place only the name of the Saint or Scene on an Icon. Names or explanations on iconography will be in both Greek and English.
