The Principal’s word
Kia ora koutou
Thank you to all who shared in our fantastic
celebration of the excellence of our students at our
Senior Prizegiving on Tuesday evening. We are all very
proud of the successes and accomplishments of our
students in 2015. Excellence is not an outcome, it is a
way of being, a way of living your life. These students
exemplify excellence and I am extremely proud of
them.
A copy of the prize list is included with this newsletter.

Our top Maori/Pasifika achiever is an award to
recognise the outstanding success and potential of
our Maori and Pasifika students. It is pertinent that
we acknowledge their success in a culturally
responsive way. We want to empower our young
people to be confident and connected in who they are
and where they come from and be proud of their
culture and heritage as it is special and part of their
identity. This Taonga represents the journey and
growth one must go on to reach their goals and
potential as humans regardless of culture.
Otago University Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship –
Bridget Rollinson. This scholarship was established by
the University of Otago Council for 2006 to assist
students who have demonstrated all-round ability and
who exhibit leadership potential to attend the
University of Otago and is valued at $6000.00. It is
awarded for the first year of study at the University.
Since its inception Waimate High School has only had
one Recipient receive this award prior to this year.
Niamh recipient of the Midland Music Scholarship
William Pike was an inspiring speaker who was most
entertaining. He shared with us his story of survival.
He was caught in a lahar on the slopes of Mount
Ruapehu after a volcanic eruption. His legs were
caught in the rubble that had partly buried the dome
shelter in which him and a friend were overnighting.
He was critically injured.
William is a role model for us all, and a leader in the
outdoor and education industries. He is a living,
breathing example to people of all ages that anyone
can overcome adversity and challenges, leading to a
more fulfilling life. He challenged us all to follow our
passion in life.
Thank you to the team of people who contributed to
the success of the evening and to making it such a
memorable occasion. Special thanks to Ms Tagiaia for
masterminding everything.
Best wishes to all our senior students for their
external exams.

ATTENDANCE:
We want to thank all the parents and caregivers for
your support around improving attendance and our
ROCK ON PROCESS. We have seen a big increase
in attendance this year from last year. It is important
to remember that all absence must be a fully justified
reason for absence and the ministry have very strict
guidelines around what this looks like. Also all medical
related absences require a doctor's certificate if they
are longer than 2 days. The minimum expectation is
85% attendance maintained for the full year but
should be higher than this ideally. The benchmark of
85% is based on the data that indicates a student is at
serious risk of non and under achievement should
their attendance drop below this.
We appreciate the support homes have given around
improving attendance and ensuring that holidays are
kept to holiday time and not scheduled in school term
time.
Congratulations to our Attendance Reward recipients
for terms two and three. Each term students with 98%
or better attendance go into a draw for a $50
Warehouse Voucher.
Term 2 Winners:
Thomas Ronson, Dara Rose Morton and Jess Koiatu
Term 3 Winners:
Jayden Meynell, Angus Wilson and William Drake
Student/Teacher Trapshooting
Last Thursday, in very cool conditions, our
Student/Teacher shoot was held at the Waimate
airport, competing for the Sam Rooney Trophy.
Up first were the the teachers. First time
trapshooters, Miss Sneesby, Mr Familton and Mr
Liddy, supported by duckshooter Mr Carlaw, and third
season veteran Mr Simonsen made up the squad.
Miss Sneesby surprised herself when she shot her first
target, commenting after “it was a lot of fun”. Mr
Familton up next, settling in after his first break,
finishing two points behind Miss Sneesby. Mr Carlaw,
finding it a little different from shooting ducks, shot a
creditable 14 targets and 23 points. Mr Liddy, filling in
as reserve shooter, saw a few of his targets break, and
am sure with practise next time, will see an
improvement on his score. Final shooter Mr Simonsen
was on form, also hitting 14 targets, but with no
second shots, finishing one point ahead on 24.
Senior trapshoooters Blair Chamberlain, Luke McRae,
George Campbell, Hamish Sheddan and Ben McRae
were up next, started off strongly, but missing targets
in the last few rounds, with George finishing on top
with 21 targets.
Final squad to shoot were Campbell Sheddan, Edward
Campbell, Shaun Olorenshaw, Billy Powell, Kate
Colvill, and Jacob McKinlay. With weather
deteriorating it was agreed that the rounds would be
dropped back to 15. Billy shot the top score in this
event hitting 10 targets.
The trophy once again going to the senior shooters for
2015.
The afternoon concluded with afternoon tea and a
thankyou to coaches Keith Batchelor and David
Morgan, and staff member Trish Davis.
StudyLink Information
Students thinking about further study after they leave
school have a lot of choices to make.
Sussed Online is a great way to get thinking about
what it will cost to live and study. Will it be broadband
and baked beans, or dial up and dining out? Part-time
job or parents helping? Hear from students about
their experiences and the choices that need to be
made. You’ll also find out more about StudyLink and
what they do along the way.
We encourage students and parents to check it out at
