Patty Power
Control Group = people that got the regular
mayo sauce -Group B
Independent variable = type of sauce
Dependent variable = amount of gas (stinky!)
Mr. Krab's should conclude that the new sauce
seems to reduce gas production since 60% of
the test group improved but does not work
100% of the time.
8 people may have had the "placebo effect" believing they were having the new sauce.

Slimotosis
Sponge Bob observed slime on Gary's shell and
an odor coming from the shell.
Independent variable = type of treatment
**used 2 at the same time which is not OK
Dependent variable = amount of slime and odor
Sponge Bob cannot conclude anything specific.
He will need to test each remedy separately to see
those results first.
Is it rubbing seaweed?
Is it drinking Dr Kelp?
Is it the combination of the 2?
No control....does slimotosis just go away on
its own?

Marshmallow Muscles
Control group = Sponge Bob
Independent variable = type of lotion rubbed on
Dependent variable = amount of strength increase
Larry should conclude that _________________.

Microwave Miracle
Hypothesis - If....then....
If fish eat microwaved food, then they will improve their maze solving time.
Control = the fish that got regular food
Independent variable = type of food they ate
Dependent variable = time in the maze
Patrick should conclude that ____________. Why???

Jim, Jody, and Juan, all sixth graders, love to play tennis and are interested in forming
an interscholastic tennis team. Mr. Bingham and Mr. Hlavacek agree to coach a team
and hold tryouts at the end of October. In order to create excitement about a team and
encourage students to try out they decide to hold tennis practice sessions after school
every day for two weeks. Seeing as how this was their idea, Jim, Jody, and Juan want to
make sure that they will make the team. To ensure their placement on the team, they
test to see which brand of tennis ball helps produce the fastest serve. Jim, Jody, and
Juan believe that if they determine the ball that produces the fastest serve, they will
definitely make the tennis team because they will have an advantage over the other
players.
Before completing the experiment, they all think that Penn tennis balls will bounce the
highest because they are the hardest to squeeze. Using Penn, Wilson, and Dunlop
tennis balls, they decide to drop each ball from 15 meters above the ground onto a clay
tennis court. They measure the height that each ball bounces and record this value in
their data table. Jim, Jody, and Juan complete five trials for each tennis ball and record
an average height in their data table.

Think about the validity of the experiments.
Be sure to support your conclusions.

Krusty Krab Breath Mints
1) Control = the people who received the mint
without the secret ingredient - group B
2) Independent variable = secret ingredient in
the mint
3) Dependent variable amount of breath odor
(bad breath)
4) Mr. Krab's can conclude that the breath mint
with the secret ingredient appears to reduce the
amount of breath odor more than half the time,
but it is not 100% effective.
5) possible placebo effect
October 09, 2014
Sponge Bob Clean Pants
6) SpongeBob's pants were not clean.
7) Independent variable = type of laundry soap
8) Dependent variable = amount of dirt left on
the pants (or how clean the pants were)
9) Sponge Bob should conclude that Clean-O
laundry soap does not appear to be effective in
cleaning his pants.
October 09, 2014
Squidward's Symphony
10) Independent variable = type of instrument played
11) Dependent variable = number of jellyfish that came
12) The clarinet did seem to attract a large number of jellyfish, but the average
number for the 3 trials also matched the average for the guitar. The flute attracted
the least number of jellys, but the average for this category is still larger than the
control.
Music seems to attract the jellys in greater numbers than when no music is played.
Therefore, Squidward's hypothesis that the clarinet attracts larger numbers of jelly
fish than other instruments is not proven by this experiment alone.
13) Based on the limited amount of information provided, it is difficult to tell if
Squidward's results are reliable. The description did not tell how long each break
was between trials. Did he leave enough time for the jellyfish to "clear out" of the
area? ETC
October 09, 2014
Super Bubbles
14) The ads claimed that the Super
Bubble solution would produce
bubbles that were twice as large as
those made with regular soap.
15) Independent variable = type of
bubble solution
16) Dependent variable = size of the
bubble (diameter)
17) Super Bubble = 15.1 cm
Regular Soap = 11.5 cm
Patrick should conclude _______.
Why???
18) Valid? Why or why not?

Mrs. Olson believes there is a connection between students' diets
and their performance in science class. She knows vegetables
are "brain healthy" and many students don't eat enough of
them. She believes increasing broccoli (her personal favorite)
consumption will help student scores. Period 4 is required to eat
a pound of broccoli each week, Period 5 is required to 2 pounds
of broccoli each week and Period 8 is allowed to continue with
their regular diet. Mrs. Olson plans to monitor grades on
quizzes and tests over the course of the next quarter. She will
compare quiz and test averages at the end of the experiment.
1) IND Variable / DEP Variable
2) Write a Hypothesis Statement for Mrs. Olson
3) Control
4) A Constant Variable

1. Control Group -- Group B
2. Independent Variable -- Drink consumed
3. Dependent Variable -- #of stacks of papers stapled
4. What should Smithers' conclusion be? the special juice
doesn't work to improve work productivity
5. How could this experiment be improved?
6. What was the initial observation? Slime on the shower
Identify the7. Control Group - Side sprayed with water
8. Independent Variable - Spray used to clean (the coconut juice)
9. Dependent Variable - Appearance/amount of Slime
10. What should Homer's conclusion be? Coconut juice does not
remove shower slime.

Identify the11. Control Group - Mice not exposed to radio waves
12. Independent Variable - amount of radio waves they are exposed to
13. Dependent Variable - Strength of mice
14. What should Bart's conclusion be? Although the "radiowaved" mice
outperformed the control group, it was by a very small amount - 10%.
Therefore, he should probably run further tests.
15. How could Bart's experiment be improved?
Identify the16. Control Group - Subject A
17. Independent Variable - powder
18. Dependent Variable - length of itchiness
19. Explain whether the data supports the advertisements claims
about its product. -
